3Ds Max Tutorial - Simple Folding Doors Rig with Wire Parameters

3D Studio Max tutorial showing how to quickly rig a folding door using linking and wire parameters.
In case it's hard to see in the video the code for the wire parameters is -
Door 1 to door 2 - "-Z_Rotation*2"
Door 1 to door 3 - "Z_Rotation*2"
Door 1 to door 4 - "-Z_Rotation*2"

Works great. Thank you! I'm only using 2 doors, so it wasn't working for me at first. Took me a few minutes to realize that I want “Z_Rotation*2” instead of “-Z_Rotation*2”

this is perfect but what if the complete gate is inclined at a 6 degree angle.

im using 3dmax 2014 and the script doesn't works, -Z_Rotation gives script error the Parameter Wiring window doesnt even shows the Z rotation, or Y or X, just "Rotation: TCB Rotation" ... damn .. i had to have the only max with changed options.. anyways, the error message says "--No "u-" function for undefined"

after linking the rotation not working on same axes for parents . when i m rotating door one in z Direction door 2,3,4 rotating in - y direction... but if i do all this with out linking then they all rotate in same direction but now on their own pivot point not on main window ( as they are not linked) what should i do

Is there audio for this video? Just curious about some details. Trying to set up a similar door for a home design project and I want the door to open in the middle rather than the accordion fold. I imagine the process is similar, but since I'm not getting any audio, it makes it hard to extrapolate.

Sorry no audio, but if you follow my steps you will re-create the rigging, and the code is in the comments on the youtube page. If you want it to open from the middle, then you would need to only rig 2 doors, and perhaps mirroring them would work, but then again it might not!

Not working in 3ds max 2015, altough i did obtain quite a spectacular effect while trying, not gonna help me get back the 2 hours i wasted trying to make it work tho.

I haven't used 2015 yet, so perhaps the code needs changing to work properly, although I do doubt it, as the wire parameter has been long established in Max, and would be very odd for AD to alter it.

Yeah i don't know what i am doing wrong when i link them and rotate door 2 starts rotating on the y axis instead of z as it should, could z and y be inverted in the pivot maybe?

Yea maybe, check the pivot rotation. I can send my max file if I can find it if you want to see it?

That was the isue apparently, the pivot was not oriented the same way for all of the doors.
