I love this movie! It taught us about the importance of mental health. Joy just wanting Riley just be happy, but denying her a chance to be sad just only make things worse. So she learned that letting out your feelings makes your mind balanced and find your inner peace.

Riley needed to be sad because she experiencing quite a traumatic change but she was supressing sadness to be her parents happy kid. This is expressed in the film with Joy constantly constraining Sadness and eventually both of them were gone from Rileys mind for a period of time.

I think, the reason why Sadness was the only one able to change the memory into sadness, is because Riley in this was feeling sad and like, real sadness. She needs to feel that way to balance the joy and happiness Joy has been controlling and giving her. Sometimes, we need to feel sad to balance the emotions leading to real happiness. Sadness brings sympathy and understanding, at times more than just pure joy all the time(or I should say, TOXIC POSITIVITY).

When people get so mad with sadness and look at her as the villain... The story is about sadness trying to come out because of Riley's situation. It was natural to feel that emotion.. undergoing changes due to moving to a different place, seeing things would never be the same again since they moved to a different place. It's normal to remember those memories feeling sad. But she was being repressed because they thought that Riley should always be happy. She wasn't allowed to feel sadness when she actually needed to cry. Which of course isn't healthy. Not facing emotions and allowing to feel it fully isn't healthy.

Commentators keep coming down on Sadness, but the real villain is Joy because she expects Riley to be happy all the time. But that's not good. We need sadness because sadness helps us to deal with hard times and it helps us to empathize with other people, which is why the mother's main emotion was Sadness (Empathy). Like when Bing Bong's rocket was destroyed. Joy wanted to pretend like everything was okay, but Sadness helped Bing Bong deal with the loss and it made him feel better, and then there's the memory of Riley feeling bad because she missed the winning shot which caused her team to lose the championship. Joy finally realized how important Sadness is when she said "Mom, dad, the team- they came to help because of Sadness". The point is, we all have these emotions for a reason, and they all have a purpose in our lives, including Sadness.

This movie is a good starting place to have conversations about mental health with children. They had psychologists in the writing room to give feedback on the ideas. Speaking of kids not being emotionally mature, that is highlighted in the movie with Riley's emotions all being up and about, when the parents emotions are all seated at the console and working together.

@@SeyaDiakite7 I think that's kind of the point. you're taught to dislike Sadness from the start, since the story is from Joy's perspective, and initially she doesn't see the value in Sadness or see a purpose for her in headquarters. The line "There's nowhere for her to go, I've checked" just is really telling of how little Joy thinks of Sadness. We think of Joy as an infallible thing to always strive for, so if she doesn't see the value in Sadness, we instinctually believe that she's right.

When you look back at the beginning of the movie, you can tell that Joy was the real problem, but not intentionally of course. She, just like all the other emotions, only wants what's best for Riley, but in her mind she thinks that she is the only good emotion for her to feel because joy feels good. Anger, Fear and Disgust to her are all necessary evils, something Riley needs to feel from time to time so that she can survive. And Sadness? Joy didn't see any purpose for her other than to hinder her from doing her job. Because of this she acted like a dictator over all the other emotions and only allowed Riley to feel joy, while suppressing her Sadness and not allowing Riley to process her grief over leaving her old home, leading her to go into depression. The only reason she was able to get out is because she allowed herself to feel sad.

The reason we have a hard time seeing Bing bong's death scene or him disappearing it triggers us because deep down inside we all once imagine a friend to be in our lives. And to us they were real, and we all had a wonderful childhood. At least in my case I know that's why this scene hit me so hard I remember my imaginary friend and it's kind of like those small memories you don't think about, but they do still exist inside us somewhere in our hearts and memories. But the emotions are a lot, but Sadness is correct sadness is needed in our lives weather we can relate to or not is up to other people but to me I can see how Sadness can make us show Empathy for others and also bring in help when we need it, because when your sad it's the time most try to listen. if you try to hide all your emotions like Joy tries to do, it's not a good thing, in that case it's kind of toxic in my opinion because you can't live your life like that, and the reasons Sandess is reacting this way, it's because Raily's body is changing, and her moving away caused the emotions to become stronger and more mixed of confusion and sadness.
@wastelandlegocheem6 ай бұрын
I love the way they show emotions need to be balanced. Anger is out the unfairness of a situation and the ability to stabilize that balance Discust is about social and food poisoning. Fear is about safety And sadness, the most important of all, is empathy. The physical expression that you are not happy or dissapointed. Perfectly balanced. As all things should be. The message at the end is just so wholesome...
