Episode Description:
I'm confident in saying 3M is bigger than most people realize, you may not have even heard of them. Over 100 years of innovation (and some luck early on) has resulted in over $30 billion in annual sales, they're one of the 30 companies that make up the Dow, and make many of the products you encounter daily. In this video I talk about how they got so big and why most people don't realize how big they are.

I knew about 3M from a book called "To Engineer is Human" by one Henry Petroski. One of the things that 3M does, is allows it's employees to use their facilities for a percentage of their time to experiment and try to create new products. The employees are *paid* for this time. They are also told "Fail early, fail often." Just because something doesn't do what you intended, doesn't mean it's useless. The post-it notes are a good example of this in action. Someone tried to make an adhesive, which is something that 3M uses in just about everything they make. The adhesive wasn't much good - it comes right off! Some years later, someone else at 3M wanted to make a bookmark that would stay put, but could be removed from a book's pages without damage - and they used this "bad" adhesive. The bookmarks ended up being used to write stuff on more than they were used as bookmarks. And here we are, post-it's for almost four decades now.

Apparently, even if you fail, you may not! I'm not sure this is true but I read it in many places.I know that doesn't make it true but maybe it is. Post-It Notes Were Invented By Accident (www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2011/11/post-it-notes-were-invented-by-accident/)

I believe they offer a percentage of the patent to the inventor, and 3M turns that patent into a product, so the guy that invented the sticky note adhesive, he's stupid rich now, all because his company encouraged him to make it, and his company used their resources to turn it into a working product.

I owned a small Autobody shop for years. Painting cars is a business with a massive amount of overhead. Sand paper and masking products are about half of the total materials expenses. Nothing beats 3M in that area, at least there wasn't anything available ~10+ years ago that could compete. I tried to find alternatives too. There were cheaper alternatives but every one of them I tried ended up costing the same after accounting for materials used per job. A box of 50 sanding disks from another brand may cost 80% of the 3M version, but I always seemed to need that extra fifth of materials to get the same job done. Why fill my trashcan/dumpster 20% faster/more? 3M is the master of the sandpaper world. Their industrial products side is usually a completely different standard than the consumer market offerings though. The stuff you find in big box stores is generally low quality. It's okay for getting basic stuff done, and it's competitive with the other products on the market, but the stuff marketed directly to industry is completely different. -Jake

There are probably various newer Bondo branded products that have better formulations at this point, but the stuff I've used was rather unimpressive compared to what else I've tried. Rage Extreme costs a fortune, but the amount of time it saves due it's shaping properties is far more valuable than the cost difference ;) -Jake

I've used 3M products in the auto repair industry. They are huge in the auto body segment making most every repair product / PPE and small tool short of primer and top coat paint. I really like this quote from William L. McKnight who joined the company as an assistant book keeper in 1907 , rose to president in 1929 and finally Chairman of the Board in 1949. The Basic Rule of Management As our business grows, it becomes increasingly necessary to delegate responsibility and to encourage men and women to exercise their initiative. This requires considerable tolerance. Those men and women, to whom we delegate authority and responsibility, if they are good people, are going to want to do their jobs in their own way. Mistakes will be made. But if a person is essentially right, the mistakes he or she makes are not as serious in the long run as the mistakes management will make if it undertakes to tell those in authority exactly how they must do their jobs. Management that is destructively critical when mistakes are made kills initiative. And it’s essential that we have many people with initiative if we are to continue to grow. “If you put fences around people, you get sheep. Give the people the room they need.” - William L. McKnight

I worked at a 3M plant in Wisconsin, they had around 20 different departments making everything from tape to diapers. My department made polycarbonate sheeting that had special refracting properties (it is one of many layers that go into electronic screens) we would send the 5000lbs+ rolls all over the country and world. A side note: During the space race in the 1960’s my plant in Wisconsin had scientists working very hard with the US government to develop a material that could help the spaceship capsule re-enter to atmosphere without burning up. The room they used is now a storage room that still has foot and half solid metal doors they used for security.

Here is one I would like to see in "Bigger than you know": Kroger Wikipedia: The Kroger Co., or simply Kroger, is an American retailing company founded by Bernard Kroger in 1883 in Cincinnati, Ohio. It is the United States's largest supermarket chain by revenue ($115.34 billion for fiscal year 2016),[4] the second-largest general retailer (behind Walmart)[4] and the seventeenth largest company in the United States.[5] Kroger is also the third-largest retailer in the world and the third largest private employer in the United States.[6] Kroger is ranked #17 on the Fortune 500 rankings of the largest United States corporations by total revenue.[7]

As a longtime collector of LaserDiscs I know that they had a LaserDisc pressing plant in the U.S. (3M/Imation). They pressed commercial releases (movies and such) from 1985 to 1997. They also pressed Industrial and Promotional LDs as late as 2002. For example they pressed Promotional LDs for use in Disney stores in the U.K. in 2000, 2001, and 2002.

They make one of my favorite things: 3M 77 Spray Adhesive. You can spray it on anything and 77 Spray Adhesive basically turns it into Scotch Magic Transparent Tape. For instance, suppose you want to cut something intricate out of a piece of cardboard, metal, whatever. You print out the outline of he object on your laser printer, spray some 77 on a piece of cardboard or whatever, and stick the laser-printed piece of paper on to it. Be sure to roll it on so you don't get any bubbles. Oh, and it doesn't take very much to do the trick, less than you think. Any extra that lands where you don't want it you can clean up with isopropyl alcohol. Instant pattern. Use scissors or a saw to cut around the lines, and you've got your object!

I work for 3M and have been with them since 2007. It amazes me how many people give me the “huh” look when I say I work for 3M. I always follow it up with - “you know, the company who makes post-it notes and scotch tape” and then the person smiles and nods. Something that people might not know - is just how much if your everyday life depends on 3M products and tech - we help airplanes, boats, and cars hold together without adding a lot of weight. And 3M products and tech are in your smart phones. We make tons of sterile tapes ad dressings that are used in hospitals and tapes and casts and really it’s mind numbing. We make reflective tapes used on highway signs and roads. It’s stunning how much you interface with 3M without ever knowing it. Anyone looking to work for a great company should look at 3M. They are really a great employer - just top notch in all the ways you want.

New sub, nice vid. I worked for 3M for 5 years. I will say three things about them. 1) their policies for treating their employees as people is excellent and I often felt fortunate I worked for them...they also have “good” American policies; 2) I worked in their security unit, and for a time our group was in TSSD, same unit you highlighted that used to make things like national ID cards and passports...my group was acquired and specialized in biometric identification, especially but not exclusively for law enforcement; 3) 3M looks like they make all their money selling consumer and business utility consumables...they also make a lot of money buying and selling companies (acquiring companies or selling off units once they get what they want out of them).

Interesting fact about scotch tape is that in Russian language there is a word "скотч" that is phonetically similar to English "scotch". Скотч can sometimes be used for scottish wiskey, but "шотландский виски" is more common. The most common usage is as "tape". Kinda like band-aid in the US. We also often use "памперс" (pampers, mentioned in another video of this series) for any diaper , despite having word "подгузник" for it.

Worked for them for about 5 years when they were manufacturing in Australia in the 70s/80s. By far the best managed company I have ever worked for. Their generous attention to safety and encouragement of innovation were particularly noticeable. From memory they aimed to have half their income from products developed or improved over the preceding 5 years. They often were the first to produce something new and valuable, and could charge a premium for it. When others started to compete with them they would exit, but not before selling those same competitors the solutions to problems they had encountered in making the original product (like anti-static products needed to produce adhesive tapes without having frequent fires). That's seriously clever. It's a company that deserves to be successful.
