I apologize for the video being a lot more rambly and less edited than our normal content. With Steph in hospital last week, i decided to make something a lot quicker and easier than a 3 minute recap. And yes, a 45 minute video like this is less work than a normal recap, as weird as that sounds. Stephs feeling a lot better now, so things should be back to normal soon.

I love your concise 3 min videos but for a game like spirit island, that I am heavily invested in, this discussion based format lends itself perfectly. I am very happy for the length because I can appreciate your reasoning. The editing is good for me, so no issues there. Hope you both stay well and thanks for making this video :)

The strongest two spirit combos I have found in the game are 1. Ocean and River. Water + Water = Win. River pushes into the ocean, powering up ocean, which gives River energy through its starting card which powers up River, which then pushes more into the ocean until game over. 2. Volcano and Rampant Spread of Green. Getting volcano’s presence out faster means you can hit a mid level explosion (6 presence) quite early, or an enormous explosion (10+) mid game and potentially win the game on that turn. It is so fun to bide your time, waiting for the invaders to build up and then erupt and kill an entire board at once, generating dozens and dozens of fear.

If there is a third player, put them in as Lightnings Swift Strike. Speeding up River's innate while benefitting massively from Boon of Vigor. With all that energy lightning can easily assist Ocean's backline

4 player game, the strongest combination I have ever seen is River Surges in Sunlight, Ocean's Hungry Grasp, Spread of Rampant Green, and Serpent Slumbering Beneath the Island. Seriously. You cannot lose. Another combo that I have not personally seen but could understand why it might be better, is sub out Rampant for Sharp Fangs Behind the Leaves. If that combo gets to late game, it's game over

I played the volcano with the two spirits from Horizon - the one adds explorers instead of buildings during build which kept the cities to the other end of the board - the other boosted our range and added energy like crazy. We ended up lining up the volcano to take out all the cities in a single eruption + a few minor powers to finish off. It was fantastic.

Just a piece of advice, solo you need to get minor powers early, and can actually get a major power pretty quick because their energy creation is so good from drowning when solo.

Shadows Flicker like Flame having a mellow identity is actually something I love! It also has great energy acceleration allowing you to pick up on swingy, expensive cards and build around them. He also helped me appreciate slow cards. Thunderspeaker was actually my least favorite because she felt very slow and unimportant.

Εven though Ocean is by far my favorite spirit to play, I can see why some people don't get it. It's not easy to get in sync with it's rhythm and style of play. It starts very slow and it takes a lot of effort to build up to it's power spikes, not to mention that bad timing can set you back 2 whole turns. At first I simply enjoyed it because it made pushing so much more powerful for the entire team. But the more I played it the more I appreciated it's nuances and unique abilities. It's not for everyone and limiting yourself to mostly coast areas can feel restrictive but for anyone who finds their plays getting repetitive and are looking for something totally unique and new I wholeheartedly suggest trying it out.

Great stuff, thanks for sharing your experience with these spirits! Part of the beauty of this game is how different each spirit plays and how every person will experience them differently. My personal top 5 favorite to play are: 1. Mists: Vanishing things. 2. Fractured: The master of time. 3. Trickster: Fun troublemaker! 4. Finder: Magical portals everywhere. 5. Ocean: Respect the sea. Don't know if they're the strongest but certainly the most fun to me, and we usually play difficulty 9 or 10. I know there are already lots of spirits but I wish there were even more! Love this game so much, highly recommended to anyone out there looking for a fun co-op challenge.

Starlight is my absolute favorite spirit, and that has a lot to do with how it can draw a major power turn 2 and basically play it every turn thereafter due to the flexibility of the growth options. The identity of Starlight becomes that major power for the game, and after some customization it even gets the thresholds with each play. Just look through the major power deck and for each card imagine how awesome it would be to play it each turn for an entire game (it has to be about 5 energy cost or less to work out without help from other spirits). I have yet to have it happen, but just imagine Strangling Firewines turn 3 (with threshold) and onwards! The initial draw of major powers is indeed horribly random, but part of the fun is using all the spirit's options to adapt to whatever you pick. Just as a few examples, I had a game of playing Unrelenting Growth every turn which led to unprecedented acceleration, and a game with Sea Monsters together with Fangs that was completely nuts. Every game with Starlight is unique, and that is the true strength of the spirit.

Great video! I enjoyed the different format, and I adore everything Spirit Island. It seems we have pretty differing tastes and opinion about a lot of these Spirits, which I personally find to be awesome; one of the things I love about this game is that there is so much diversity that every person can come at it a totally different way and have a great time all the same. While I could probably ramble on for hours and discuss it point by point with you, for both our sakes, I’ll just go with some highlights 😆. Thunderspeaker (and to a lesser extent Fangs) I find myself reaching to play with less often because despite being very fun and powerful, the analysis paralysis is massive; I’m pretty guilty of AP in general, but Thunderspeaker brings it out in me the most. Curiously, I experience almost none with Starlight; I usually just go with the flow of the first few power cards I get, it’s a very zen experience I find. Even though Ocean is my heart and soul since the first time I opened the box, I can totally understand your hesitation with it and why you might shy away, because the tidal ebb-and-flow gameplay can be tricky to master. I have a similar reaction with Vengeance; I tried and tried and could not get a good game with it, but I had this sneaking feeling it could be really cool in the right hands (so I’m happy to hear that’s the case). I’ve found Trickster to consistently feel amazing to play, without being too over-the-edge (*cough Keeper cough*) powerful. Strife is an awesome mechanic because it is by nature not as strong as things like disease, but the fact that you can use it to fix something RIGHT NOW, makes Trickster feel like he’s saving the day in the nick of time pretty consistently (plus his Uniques allow for some interesting planning around strife too). I’ll stop there before I go into detail on all of them, but cheers, love Spirit Island content, and thanks for another quality video! 😃
@3MBG
@3MBG 3 жыл бұрын
Cool thoughts. I'm very good at spatial stuff, which is probably why Thunderspeaker and co work for me. Oceans, i guess i just need to communicate better with the team while playing him, because i've occasionally got quite starved for power. Vengeance, yeah, seems like a similar issue, but he clicked with me out of the box for some reason. And, i felt weird saying trickster was dependable, but weirdly he is, and your point about strife nails it. The number of times trickster just stops a hot spot from ravaging is a lot. Great thing about this game, the truly great thing, is that the spirits are so varied and that everyone who gets the game will naturally fit better in different playstyles.

This just makes me want to start playing Spirit Island again. We have not played it in over a year (two?) because we tend not to play anything else when we do. In the same regard we avoid Thunderspeaker because she's everyone's favorite around here. I guess when we start again it will be a lot of Thunderspeaker spririt combos until we force ourselves off the habit again. If I'm introducing the game to new players I usually play Strength of the Earth so I can be a safety net of sorts and it usually puts other spirits in the driver's seat, if there ever really is one in any game.

I love Ocean, I have a soft spot for location-limited spirits, so I like Volcano more than most, honestly. I love having one specific area and wrecking the hell out of it. I also like Oceans on bigger boards, because you're jumping around, interacting with everybody, and you go from shoving all your power into a little space into being a fire-fighter for other spirits that are less powerful on the coast. It's a great dynamic, changes a lot with player count, and I also find their innate powers simple but effective

Yeah, these lists will always be heavily influenced by personal style. Definite bias from me towards more mobile spirits. I also suspect thats a little from me being, quite often, the most experienced player at the table, and wanting to help out people by moving to cover them. Thunderspeaker, sharp fangs, downpour are all that sort of style.

Love the list, but I cant help being a little heartbroken to see my favourite spirit Starlight right down the bottom. I feel in love with the concept since before Jagged Earth's release and they've been my go-to pick ever since. I do understand your reasoning, and I agree that they're definitely a handful on the first try, but I have to disagree with them never seeing a starring role. With a little tinkering you can play as fast or as slow as possible, and you can shine at whatever stage of the game you're needed. Most importantly, you're never stuck in the dreadful situation of gaining a card and not getting a single element you need. Every element is yours, and you can genuinely consider taking whatever cards you want or need. Granted if you're trying to pick something that will fit a certain role then Starlight is sure to disappoint, but if you're indecisive like me then it's a delight to just be able to gain a ridiculous number of cards and roll with it. Not here to say you have a wrong opinion, just wanted share some perspective and give a little love to my favourite stellar speck. Thanks for getting me and many others into this game, and keep up the good work.

Yeah, I like Starlight too - you could get some amaizing combo with him even on solo-spirit Map! You could go as wide and as high with him as you want and he... or she... they is truly an amaizing everchanging and evolving beast that, yeah, maybe not always good at something particular (but it mostly depend on your cards and major powers), but definetly could make a job done. So yeah, I too don't intend to critisize 3min. top by that, amaizing video nontheless and SI is definetly an amaizing game, atleast for my expiriense :)

I definitely agree. I see starlight as the missing link in any game as she can fill in any role that is needed such as damage (like you said), defense and healing, or control. So if a team has a critical weakness in their formation, starlight can fill that role.

Shroud of silent mist + keeper of the forbidden wilds is crazy Shroud can place 2 presence start of turn then keeper can play the card that gives a player a power card and that player gets an energy if keeper targets an ally. Also shroud has a power where once per turn if they gain a power card without fire element it gains 1 energy so u can potentialy gain a power card and 2 energy on top of being able to add 2 presence. Its epic cause u can do this *every* turn and just ramp presence for the whole game. It is so fun.

Shadows Flicker Like Flame is in this weird category where against certain opponents it's in really bad shape, but against others it is potentially overpowered. The key is Darkness Swallows the Unwary. If the invaders explored into previously empty lands last turn, meaning that there's only one explorer, even the first level of Darkness Swallows the Unwary can cancel an entire build/blight cycle in the fast phase of the round it started. At level two, if the invaders explored into two previously empty lands and those lands are adjacent, you can cancel the entire invader cycle for that exploration. The problem is that some invaders spam buildings during setup, or, explore with more than one explorer or with towns. A Spread of Rampant Green is one of the strongest spirits in the game, and can make anyone overpowered. But it's particularly strong when paired with spirits like Shadows. Shadows essentially gets one of the strongest "deal with the early game board" powers in the game in the form of level 1 or ideally level 2 Darkness Swallows the Unwary. But it's hard to get there before the board is overrun and the power isn't as good. Green shifts that dramatically. Finder of Paths Unseen is best paired with someone like Keeper of the Forbidden Wilds, Stone's Unyielding Defiance, or River Surges in Sunlight. Keeper has so much damage that he sometimes runs out of things he can reach to kill, so, late game Paths just mails him invaders to slaughter in his spare time. Stone's Unyielding Defiance doesn't really care how many invaders are present. Quantity isn't important to Hold the Island Fast, and Let them Break Themselves does damage proportional to the invaders ravage damage, so it automatically scales when there are more invaders. And River's late game flood just does damage based on the number of opponents. Open the Ways means you can not only push invaders from one end of the island all the way to the other to let these types of allies kill them, but you can also let your allies do the same thing. You can let River or someone similar push invaders through your adjacency portal into a kill zone. Downpour is strong for a lot of reasons but one low key reason is that it doesn't matter what elements are on Downpour's power cards. Early game you can take a power that's good but doesn't have your elements because you'll probably just discard it anyways, so it doesn't matter. Late game you can use the eight water on your track and your growth action to get four repeats of a power card that isn't normally part of what river does. Four repeats of a card that causes three fear can win the game at the right moment, or four repeats of a card that cures a blight.

To each his/her own experience of the game of course, so here is a bit of mine. At lower difficulty games (3 or less) we (my gamer pals and me) found all spirits to be viable somehow with, perhaps, Thunderspeaker and Rampant Green Shining very bright. At higher difficulty games (from 4 and up to max level adversary+a scenario) many of them wouldn't scale very well or just be dead on arrival, depending on the win/lose conditions. Overall though, we found River to be unviable/card dependant at higher difficulty games unless paired with the Ocean, Thunderspeaker not to scale very well and be very dependant on the cards he'd draw (as soon as his 3Def card doesn't really work anymore), Claws to be on the weaker side due to his blight restrictions, Lightening something to be atrocious unless his accelerating mechanic would help the others break the game enough to save him by round 2 or 3, Bringer of Dreams to be a headache to survive, Shadow Flicker (specially some of his aspects) to be incredible in almost every situations/scaling, Time to vary between difficult and amazing (more often the later), Sparrow to be decisive in mid to late game win (once you've stacked everything on one or two lands, you just destroy everything with one card) though oftens truggling in early games, Rampant green to go from god on earth to..."ok, I'll help you now so you may save me by mid game), Keeper to be struggling in early games then god tier, the rock guy that doesn't care for blight to be god tier, the rain bird to be ultra god tier, Mist something to be struggling hard from start to finish, Volcano to scale very very well because his mechanic basically gives an extra action, Plague something not to scale very well and Wild Fire to scale well unless special rules kill his mobility by adding more blight. Serpent to be God tier in late game if offered a good synergy with other's sacrifice for his card that protects everything around is quickly rendered useless unless he absorbs other's presence quickly as well. Other spirits... depends. Usually card/events/senario/adversary dependant as soon as you go over difficulty 3 or 4. Again, each table probably has its own experience and this has been ours so far.

I haven't played too much SI yet, so it is just an opinion, but as other mentioned Ocean is insane, especially with that inner power generating 4 fear per turns alone. Push and gather spells generally involve more invaders than damage/kill cards, turning those into invader killer is amazing. Bringer of Dreams and Nightmare is also absolutely terrific in some circumstances, I personally love to know fear cards in advance, it can be amazing to plan with those. I would also debate that defense cards with dahans are anyway taking a great chunk of invaders out, so it is not always a matter to kill them with spells. What is also amazing how you can put your presence where it is needed with 4 range where either are dahan or invader. What is fun is actually playing with Bringer and Ocean together, as Ocean fixes Bringer's problem of only pushing, and both generating tremendous amount of fear.

I think personally Green should be in its own S+ tier. By far the most scalable defenses, arguably the best card in the game (gift of proliferation), I would argue that Green is so good because everybody's favorite partner is Green (except maybe Oceans and Rivers). This game is balanced by growth limitations scaling with the invaders expanding and Green invalidates that on Turn 1.

Paratroopers! Love that card. Yeah, I really like oceans too - it basically transforms 'push / gather' to become 'destroy and give energy to player' when played on coastal lands, which is kinda awesome. Starlight is probably the most skill-based spirit in the game. When other spirits say high complexity, they mean it may take a while to understand or execute their role. But with Starlight you also need to be able to see the long game, find your role and develop your spirit to suit the board state. In the hands of a highly experienced player Starlight will become exactly what the game needs every time and will always be something unique and different. Also Ocean and Nightmare being so low hurts my soul, but it is fair to say that they are both dependent on your team. As pure solo in a vacuum, you're probably right on where you placed them, but hey try a two-spirit game with just Oceans and Nightmare and see how fun it is to terrify the Invaders into Ocean's loving embrace. Before any expansions this was my favorite combo to play in the game by far. Edit: Nah, Oceans should be at least a notch higher if only because he enables any spirit's control card to become a situational "destroy" card. Nightmare is probably fine there though.

I played starlight ones, the game was turning into a lose, blight was a bit too fast, even though I was focusing on my water soothes innate. I went fishing for minor powers and found a blight removal. Sure, I'll take it, in my experience at higher level SI is about survival until you tip the scale in your favor, so a couple of turns more could help. Next growth, next minor, another blight removal. Oh wait, here we go, a couple of turns more and the board is cleaned. The other innate I chose was wood seeks, so I had damage in my back pocket, and at that point the game was just a rush against the invader deck, I think we managed to win the same turn we would have lost by empty deck. Surely the lack of the draw helped, giving me exactly what I wanted, but starlight definitely shined that game

The new player loved the game but we sure had a hard time, their entire island was blighted quite quickly (which is a bit to be expected with Lightning) :) Epic ending, as we won due to the last of 3 fear cards, otherwise we would have lost either to ravage or to explore (no more invader cards). I'd be curious to see your thoughts after more playtime with Jagged Earth. Sometimes its a matter of learning the spirit to be able to enjoy it properly. For instance, I don't care for Fangs much - find it too one dimensional and slow - but absolutely love Many Minds and find it absolutely broken at times. I think the most common issue with Many Minds is not prioritizing adding beasts early, which leaves the spirit underpowered and vulnerable mid-late game. Otherwise you can generate stupid amounts of fear/defense in late game, and the mobility makes it as engaging as Oceans or Thunderspeaker. It's fascinating how much variation there is in tier lists, even among the best players. Starlight isn't my cup of tea and feels inconsistent, but I see more experienced players (people who almost always play difficulty 10+) carry 6p games with it so I suspect it's my approach that's the issue. My personal tier list has constantly evolved as I keep playing: e.g., Keeper went from being my least favourite to one of my favourites after figuring out its rhythm. I love seeing others experience this same phenomenon.

@@3MBG yes and no. his beginning is definitely rough and you will probably need some assistance, but early in the game I find people don't mind spreading their presence throughout the board more to have more control for the rest of the game. take advantage of the +1 power card range you get from his 3 presence stack and don't get any overly expensive powers (his energy track is less important than his element track), his power is all about the explosion, the power cards should mostly be for support such as push/pull enemies into the explosion radius. The juggle is also getting power cards with his elements, he is huge on his elements more than others imo. Also don't worry too much about spreading to other mountains early on. Once built up enough you should have the elements you need for a large explosion and recovery. By then you'll also get power cards easily with his slow innate if you need more utility or elements. He is definitely no solo spirit though, he pairs well with Paths Unseen who push invaders into his radius. Also ask your buddies to help with blight control, cause you'll let it rip.

You probably haven't seen Fractured Days play out properly. It has some "Meh" effects, like the passive and the way "time" is quite unvieldy at first but there is a lot going on on the plus side: The past returns again power lets you do a lot of stuff at once: a) you can skip level 2 card special effects which can ie. potentially prevent the buliding of 6 villages against Austria in the early game. b) you know precisely what is coming (!) c) Whatever card is coming to places where you probably annihalated invaders before d) You can choose the type of terrain that you want from those already gone Do this 2-3 times and it's a real gamechanger. The other power is pour time sideways...man you can do a lot of things with that. To be able to not defend an entire board for a turn is also an A+ utility effect. And that's not even very expensive. Used in the right time you have just skipeed 2 ravages, have 2 less lands where you have to defend against that lonely explorer and have prevented 4-6 HP from being built. Also have you seen the passive? :D You can easily grant reclaim 1, play one more card and grant a slow power to somebody. I don't think it gets any better than that when it comes to a utility spirit. The miriad ways an offense spirit with limited card plays can abuse that...man... Now if this is not enough he can look at the event deck with his passive. It is usually luckier to look at the card which comes second, because now again, you know on the second round what is coming your way and if you think about how many times you've heard "Sh** if I knew this was coming I wouldn't have defended/pushed/gathered/whatevered" you know how valuable that is. I think why this spirit looks weird is that it does not derstroy or defend much. It's real power lies in the things that do not happen in a given game! (And well, thematically speaking that is one huge WOW going to the designers! )

Oh for sure, when i did this video i'd had Jagged earth for about 6 weeks, and while we mainlined games aplenty in that time, my experience with everything before Jagged Earth is 10-20 plays of each spirit more.

I am sad to once again seeing Shadows so low. It is a spirit I enjoy playing more than others.

I also really enjoy playing Shadows. I'll grant that he can sometimes be a bit frustrating to play because of his slow growth progressions. However, I feel like his ability to effectively deal with explorers (and thus prevent builds fairly reliably) is matched only by Lure of the Deep Wilderness. Unfortunately, Shadows does rely pretty heavily on getting power cards with moon and fire. If he gets a bad draw or two, it's not super fun. I feel like Shadows combos really well with spirits like Rampant Green and River Surges in Sunlight. I'm not going to try to argue that he's one of the top spirits, but I definitely wouldn't put him in the D tier. Also (last thing; I promise) I absolutely love his new Amorphous aspect. The amount of flexibility it gives him for targeting powers is just crazy.

Stone is really good against high level adversaries, easily beat England 6 and Habsburg 6 by just negating the bad effects of blight, and picking up power cards that added blight to my lands

Yep, used him a bunch more since making this vid and Stone is totally "the sin eater", just sitting on heavy blight and eating it and punching back hard.

It is funny you mentioned how you were gendering the spirits because I was wondering that too. Especially since it was all male other than Thunder Speaker, who is pretty clearly female. No critique here since I'm sure it is unintentional, but is interesting to see people default to male even of characters that are non-gendered or female. It is so bake into the way people seem to see the world without even thinking about it.

Normalizing non-gendered nouns for non-gendered things would help. But yeah, its pretty baked in from 40 years of socialization on my part.

To me, vengeance feels undertuned . Like he was too strong at one point in development and the people that could milk him for everything he was worth were doing bonkers stuff and so they dialed him back and now he can be really strong if you pilot him perfectly, but if you only do alright in your choices you find yourself in a hole you can't get out of. Thats all just theory from me, but i have seen other people play him and do a lot of impressive stuff with him (well, impressive as in they are slinging out the kind of things other spirits do with a lot less trouble, I've never seen him outshine anyone) but for me its just awful time and time again. I really, really want to like him

I'm not entirely sure Keeper of the Forbidden Wilds is a good example of a spirit that goes well with a Spread of Rampant Green? If keeper is prepared to sacrifice the first turn by just playing a 1 cost card, then Keeper can get 2 presence out every turn for most of the game, so the extra presence from Green every turn or three isn't that significant (max 25% more presence)? On the other hand, if you're playing with Serpent Slumbers or even better Vital strength of the earth, they are only getting 1 presence out max a turn, so the extra presence is twice as significant (50% more presence - or event up to 100% more if you use it with Earth's gift of strength)?

That's just a comment on minutiae - I should also comment on the rest of the video, enjoyed hearing your thoughts on the other spirits. e.g. star seeks it's form - I've spent way too many games irritating my partner by trying to make it work, so relieved when you put it in D teir 🤣 - I think I might take your suggestion and just play other spirits 😊

Legit, just played a high diff game with Serpent, green and earth (Rivers was the 4th spirit), the extra presence gain was immense. Earth got indomitable presence early as well, so had no trouble getting all the presence out. Rivers was the last to max out :)
