Clarification 1: Explore actions will not generate Explorers if there aren't any *towns or cities* or *oceans* adjacent to the space, not just "invaders." If there are only explorers adjacent or in the land, they will not generate new Explorers. Clarification 2: You did not discuss "Time Passes," during which all cards put into play during the turn are put into personal discard piles, and all damage to pieces heal; Dahan and Towns/Cities restore to full health. Clarification 3: You misspoke, saying that the Beast is placed in the "highest numbered space without printed icons," but that's actually "lowest."

A point about the intro: I wholeheartedly agree that as board gamers we need to appreciate the implications of the games we play. The latent colonialism present in many games and the objectivation of native inhabitants that comes with it is something that becomes more and more of a deal breaker for me. Games like Puerto Rico, where you play a plantation owner or Maracaibo come to mind. However, Klaus Teuber's original inspiration for Catan was Iceland during the early Viking age when there were no human inhabitants present on the island. Sure, maybe Iceland didn't want to be settled aswell and the Icelandic earth can be very jagged ... if you catch my drift. I just feel like Catan is at least not one of the worst offenders when it comes to problematic themes in games. Due to its popularity and overall themes and mechanics, it still made the perfect example for this great intro -- which I have used myself on various occasions. Thanks Shae!

The dahan would attack back and destroy both (the invader and the town). The land wouldn't have been attacked so no presence would have been removed from the board.

Or do the not and a subsequent effect of damage to the land is Dahan also perish if it goes through? Basically, is defend the only way to block damage to the land, or can the Dahan block it too?

The Dahan do not block damage to the land. When damage is dealt in a land with Dahan, it affects both them and the land. Generally yes, the only way to prevent damage is by using defend.

You might be miss interpreting a rule or two making the game harder then it is. It does take a couple games to get used to it. Eventually everything just clicks. Small tip, focus on growing your spirit as much as possible while keeping some control on your island. Try to focus on preventing builds since it will solve problems for 2 turns. Allowing a couple blights at the beginning is fine, you can't stop them all.

@@RTFM Especially since Spirit Island is not an easy game to teach to newbies! Do you think it's too much of a gamer's game to teach non-gamers to play? I personally love co-ops as intro games usually - and I adore how Spirit Island gets around the co-op alpha gamer problem with such highly thematic asymmetry combined with deep complexity! - but I've always balked at pulling SI out when playing with casual boardgamers. What do you think? Am I being too cautious? Is it just a matter of assigning the right spirits or dropping the difficulty, etc.?
@RTFM5 жыл бұрын
@@MoriMemento117 I don't think it's a great choice for people who are completely new to the hobby, though if they have some experience, it shouldn't be too bad.
