The TLDR on this one is its an ok game, that doesn't quite know what it wants to be and ends up awkwardly placed. Too busy to be casual friendly and too shallow to really grab the more hardcore crowd. It's a pleasant enough game and i'd play it again, but its not a keeper for me personally.

this seems like a fun game. I saw it at SHUX but didn't get a chance to play it. I like the artwork and board designs, and I like the little easter egg jokes. This is the type of game I'd like to play as a warm up game.

I really wanted to like Xia, but I couldnt get past the fact that when you upgrade your ship engine, what you are doing is getting a better die to roll. Which means that you may put your money into a nice big new engine and it will perform exactly the same or worse as the old one, and sucks to be you. I know whay it is done that way - if it was a fixed number then other players wouldnt have a chance against you, but still, imagine it was buying a car and your new expensive sports car manages to have the top speed of a Ford Model T for 4 days in a row...

Buy the XIA: Embers of a Forsaken Star expansion and see this problem getting fixed (And a lot of others, like trade for example...).

I know this is a year old, but on the other hand rolling a d6 three times is a lot different than rolling a d10 three times. The probability that 3d6 is 8-12 is 45%, and 3d10 is 14-19 is 45%. Any single movement roll might be high or low, but over the course of a turn and 3-4 actions, you're likely to be near the center of the bell curve. On the gripping hand, this is also a game where 1-10 kills you and 20 gives you a VP.

Thing is, if a game is super bad, I'm not gonna spend the 20 odd hours it takes to review with it. I don't hate myself enough for that. This one was ok, not great, but it still wasn't a drill bit to the temple.
