Dutch pilots just getting a closer look at that alien landscape the rest of us call 'hills'
@AudieHolland
@AudieHolland Ай бұрын
In the Maydays of World War II, when The Netherlands was invaded by its German neighbour, Dutch fighter pilots were outnumbered by their Eastern colleagues. So they resorted to this tactic dubbed 'hubobe' (hu-bow-bay) or 'huisje boompje beestje.' If there were no hills to hide among, any house, orchard or even cows would do. This tactic saved quite a few slow observer/recon planes and fighters who were running low on fuel.

@@fluchterschoen The recon planes were from the late 1920s, a few fighters were of mid 1930s vintage. They flew low and slow, using any obstacle as cover. So a herd of cows would have been perfectly usable. And since The Netherlands are extremely flat, flying extremely low might be a bit less dangerous than doing so in hilly terrain. But I also read a post flight report of one of those recon planes, that got so low it actually crashed into a dike. Both pilot and observer survived but the plane was a write-off.

I love how the engine ingests bunch of birds, slightly changes its tone as a result… but no problem, it's still fine to use reverse thrust to land overweight, easy. Engine designers, manufacturers, technicians, all live for this kind of challenge, and it was perfectly handled here.

A question, as I'm NOT a pilot (I'm a truck driver) but I have an interest in aviation.. On the first, the A380 floats on ground effect - why don't they use the spoilers to break the lift so the plane will settle? And a fun fact - the Chinook is faster than the Apache! When Apaches are escorting Chinooks, they have to slow down so the Apaches can keep up!
@NegativeROG
@NegativeROG Ай бұрын
I ask that same question all the time, too. In order for a plane to land, it has to "stop flying", which is what spoilers are designed to accomplish.
@rtbrtb_dutchy4183
@rtbrtb_dutchy4183 Ай бұрын
When you pull the spoilers at low altitude, the airplane will have a hard landing and potentially too hard of a landing. The moment those come out, the airplane becomes a brick.

regarding the speed of a Chinook i actually saw this in action over the DFW area in Texas. i had always thought Chinooks were this big cumbersome slow moving helicopter. till i i saw, now three times, one moving at a speed equivalent to a local police helicopter. never seen one at that speed before when i was actually watching
@rockets4kids
@rockets4kids Ай бұрын
This is known as "ground effect" and/or "floating." If you search on these terms in the context of airplanes you'll easily find all the technical details as to why this happens. Very often the correct response is a go-around, exactly as seen here.
@rtbrtb_dutchy4183
@rtbrtb_dutchy4183 Ай бұрын
@@rockets4kids not “or”. Ground effect isn’t the same as floating. Floating happens in ground effect and is helped by ground effect, but it’s not the same thing. And very it’s very rare that a float results in a go-around. Most pilots know how to correct in time.

I'm curious why that A380 even bothered touching down? Why didn't they just hit that TOGA as soon as they had floated that far down?
@GlutenEruption
@GlutenEruption Ай бұрын
They almost certainly did but the a380 has a LOT of momentum to overcome - it takes the engines several seconds to spool up and then another several seconds to start building up speed and all that time they're continuing to bleed off speed. They didn't consciously decide to touchdown, you just have to kinda ride it out while waiting for the plane to respond. Their speed and height, plus whatever the winds were doing determined whether they were going to do a touch and go or fly out of the float.

1:30 - An overweight landing. Hmm. Yes. Fuel is normally either burned or jettisoned in normal aircraft to reduce mass. No problem. But if electric planes [EPs?] are ever introduced, there'll be no way to alter the take-off weight. A flying EV will retain its full mass and have to carry the weight of its flight battery at all times. Presumably that will mean designers allowing for every landing to be a maximum-load 'overweight' one. You can hardly shed batteries in flight to reduce landing loads. It's hard to see many advantages for battery-powered flight when the airframe and undercarriage must be made extra-strong just to cope with normal - not emergency - operation. EPs will effectively be carrying penalty ballast even before the passengers and luggage are loaded. Guess who'll end up paying for that inefficiency. Yep. The passengers. Huge ticket prices will make EPs the equivalent of the old Concorde: very expensive travel for the fortunate few. Come to think of it, that's rather like EVs on the roads. Sigh.
@CerberusTenshi
@CerberusTenshi Ай бұрын
MTOW is only higher on longhaul flights, so only 2 aisle planes, like A330, A350, B787 etc. Battery poweree planes will only be viable for shorthaul flights and for those, you rarely go for MTOW. So not a real issue.
