Can you imagine being the commander at the base seeing a random, older model B-17 from a different squadron landing at your base, but the crew you sent off that morning in a B-17 from your squadron is getting out of it. He must've thought he was hallucinating.

As soon as I saw the thumbnail, I knew it was about Klaus Hahns. I saw his story on the TV show Dogfights. He was one of the two surviving members of the Sonderkommando Elbe to be interviewed. The other two who were talked about were Heinrich Rosner, who took out two B-24s, one of them being the “Palace of Dallas”, and Heinrich Henkel, who took out the B-24 “Sacktime”. The other pilot to be interviewed was Heinrich Henkel. Heinrich Rosner survived the war, but sadly passed away before he could be interviewed.

“All he has is engine power” Makes me think of United Airlines Flight 232, Captain Al Haynes managed to control his plane when he no hydraulics or controls of his elevators, he and his crew somehow managed to fly his broken bird and get her to the airport to help. United Airlines Flight 232 and Wentz somehow both managed the impossible, two impossible landings made possible by incredible aviators! I saw this story for the first time in the Dogfights episode "Luftwaffe's Deadliest Mission" and really loved the additional details about both Klaus Hahn and Bud Wentz's bomber crew. I remember Hahn saying the exact words in this video as part of his interview for that episode and thought it was really cool how they were used again here. Never knew that he ended up losing that wounded arm, or that Wentz and his men ended up flying another B-17 back home and got into contact with Hahn decades later. Incredible, thank you so much, Yarnhub!
@Goc4ever

Well done Yarnhub, well done. As always you outdid yourself with everything: the animation, the voice acting, the action and everything in between. I loved how you provided us with the perspective of both the crew of the B-17 and Klaus Hahn as well as the latter's motivation to show us the German side of the war and it really touched my heart that he didn't kill the B-17 crew. What's more heartbreaking about the Sonderkommando Elbe besides sacrificing so many young pilots in a last-ditch effort to turn the tide in Germany's favor is that it is reminescient of the Japanese kamikaze is that the war was already lost but still wanted to fight to the very end. You never cease to impress me Yarnhub and as a history buff you have my most sincere gratitude for providing us with such stellar content.

one of the few pilots ever in history to land a plane with only engine control, let alone safely intact on its wheels. man's an absolute beast. unless you've flown a simulator, you have no idea how insanely hard it is to fly like that. turning veryyyyy slowly with engines. rising and falling veryyyyy slowly with speed. and at any moment, the slightest imbalance, like a bad twitch of the controls, or big gust of wind, can send it spiraling out of the sky. thankfully part of the stabilizer and rear wings will still intact and the ailerons still worked. with that said, it was stupid to try landing the plane like that. should've just flown over allied space and bailed. seriously. the tiniest imbalance. gone. and if it happened while low to the ground with the landing attempt, no chance to bail.

The difference is that japanese kamikazes did it to honor their country and emperor as they were extremely religious. Germans used (in a very small scale) kamikaze pilots because they were desperate, though pilots were not expected to die and hoped to survive the impact.

Great video - especially that nice touch at the end of pointing to one of older videos. Nice idea. I eagerly wait for the next story you will visualize. Keep the good work.

When Yarnhub posts I drop everything. The realism and accuracy has gotten so good, when I saw the Ray-Ban logo on the pilot's glasses which were standard at the time for USAAF at the time, amazing.

Yarnhub, Excellent video as always. I am very much interested to know the history of the fate of the B-17 that Wentz's crew found shortly after landing in Europe. I have searched online intensively and can find little to no solid information whether the B-17 existed or not, or its serial number. If it is possible, could you share the location in which you sourced the information on the crew of "My Best Bette" and how they escaped from Europe back to England? Thank you!

It's a small detail and likely cliche to some, but I love it every time the animation slows down to let fighter pilots glare at each other.

The German Sonderkommando Elbe were not like the Japanese Kamikazes as they were supposed to jump just before striking the target. The Germans quickly dropped this as the results were very poor.
