Dear Fr Denis, it's been a while... Thank you so much for reminding me that "we are home for each other" ... I'm living a new form of religious community at this stage in my life - in a retirment village where there are three other sisters of my congregation who have been here for some years. We show interest and look out for one another, however, as each has her own time-tables with various volunteer ministries, they have not had the practice of praying together daily. Once a week we gather for a meeting and then open our evening prayer to other residents. It means we very rarely pray as just our community - I miss that very much. So, recently I raised with three other neighbours the possibility of a weekly faith-sharing on a different evening to reflect on the gospel of the day - they are delighted and we will begin in February. Your words confirmed this idea - thank you so much! The poem was utterly intriguing and it was so good to see Giselle and Paul and their little ones, to say nothing of Alessandro!!! There is no doubt how welcome we all feel at the Garden Mass. Magnificat!!! Bless you all!!!

As ever, thank you so much for this Garden Mass (with the Introit chanted by no less than wee Callisto!), dear Fr. Denis, Alessandro, Paul, Giselle, active as ever Cosmo, and Callisto. Thank you for the homily, which touched on how Jesus returned to Nazareth, but "His own received him not" and have "locked Him in frozen familiarity," also on Edgar Reitz' "Heimat." Thus Jesus separated Himself fom Nazareth, and went on His way, never to return. I laughed out loud when one of the letters said that "we shouldn't forget: people chose Barnabas!" The homily underlined that everyone should be welcome anywhere, and in this our Garden Mass, "we are home for each other." Thank you for sharing Robert Bly's poem "Snow Banks North of the House" with us, a bit bewildreing indeed, but it seems that its very disconnect between the lines, the disorienting images, sometimes inexplicable, are the very metaphors for the "separation" that the Gospel tells us: images of broken families, of not returning, of pivoting heels below the hill, instead of going up to a former home.

Dear Alice, many thanks as usual for your helpful and insightful comments. Your interpretation of Robert Bly's poem I found helpful: it is a litany of disconnections, all without explanation, so they read bluntly. But then sudden disconnections are always blunt and often left unexplained.
