For my Canon 90D I just bought a two pack and charger from BM Premium of Canon LP-E6N batteries. I will let you know how they work once I try them out. I use the battery grip which holds two batteries and I was getting tired of the slow charge process of the Canon single battery charger. Hopping that this will speed up the charging process.

In my experience 3rd Party batteries work great for about 3 month of heavy usage, after that the voltage is very unpredictable. Some fully charged 3 party batteries would not even power the camera, or would freeze the camera and I would have take them out and put them back on and see. The worst part is that I did not inmediately know that the batteries where the problem, so I lost a lot of energy solving the problem. I even changed chargers. After that I had to identify which were the problem batteries (the only acted sometimes). 3 out of 6 had become defective. 2 from one brand, 1 from the other. Do not recommended for pro work. Bad voltage will make your camera restart, and if you don't notice it you can loose the current configuration without even knowing it. WB, Framerate, Profile, very frustrating.

I agree Peter. I use Wasabe batteries in my D4, D500 and Oly M5 Mk II. I've never experienced any problems other than Wasabe does not work in the D500 grip. They list the Nikon Grips--I failed to check the fine print. Cheers

Third party batteries? I have mostly had negative experience with them. They typically don't hold as much power, and they might last a year - don't expect them to keep working! The worst case was when I had to use pliers to get the battery out of my Eos 550D (Rebel T2i), because the battery had expanded. Luckily the battery hadn't leaked, but that really brought the sweat out. So I no longer buy them. Some of them might of course not be so bad, but my point is that I can't be sure, so I stick to the Canon ones (or a battery grip).

I have 10Nos of LP- E6 (7.4V, 2000mAh) batteries that I brought for my BMPCC 4k Camera. Can I used them with my newly purchased Canon 90D and EOS R Mirroless Camera. Is them any harmful ? i.e 7.2V vs 7.4 V & also 2000mAh vs 1865mah.( because normal Canon LP-E6N batteries indicated 7.2V, 1865mAh.)

In three years of having a Canon 70D I've bought 1 Canon original battery and 6 off-brand (exactly 4 Patona and 2 that came with a battery grip for just 70 euros, comparing to the 69 euros for the Canon original). So far I had issues right away with the Canon battery (sent back in less a month) and after almost a year with one of the two that came with the battery grip. So: third party batteries all the way!

If you're in the EU: Patona! All the way. Chili Power. Not too bad either. EX-PRO I've heard a couple of decent things about. Don't get the ultra cheap Chinese brand or brandless ones. Noone to hold responsible and they *will* smoke you!

Can you use third party batteries in your regular canon charger? Or are batteries only compatible with their respective brand charger?

It would be good if a better brand stepped up and blew the OEM stuff out of the water. I suppose I am more used to the reliability side of RC batteries though, manufacturers try to bring better stuff out at a better price. In the camera world it seems to be better stuff at a vastly higher price. I use one Nikon battery and another 3rd party battery, not had any problems to report so far in about 6 months.

Just curious to know if you are still satisfied with the alternate batteries? I have been told by two high volume school photographers that most card failures are due to battery issues. So they use the originals and also use a camera grip that holds two batteries. I believe they were using canon cameras with only one card slot and claimed they had no issues using this system. I am always game for saving money where I can.

I have mostly Canon batteries for my 5D4 and 5D3 and I also have 3 or 4 Watson batteries. Although, I never did a side by side test as to how long they last, I never had a problem with the Watson type. I do usually shoot the Canons at a wedding, but I think the Watson type would be fine. I mostly use the Watson types for Engagement shoots and smaller events. Thanks for the video....

I have had mixed experiences with third party batteries. I bought 3 third party batteries for my 500D and 600D back when I used them. The 500D batteries I had no problem with. The ones I got for my 600D, one of them stopped working, then I heard a rattling sound from inside it, which wasn't good and stopped using it, but the other two were fine and still are a few years later, although I don't use my 600D much anymore so haven't used them in quite a long time. I have also used Wasabi Power batteries with my GoPro Hero4 Black and had no big issues but I did find they lasted slightly less than the GoPro batteries did and they were a little tricky to get out of the GoPro, more than the official batteries were. I actually got another official GoPro battery for it which ended up not working.

I got almost 4 years out of two $20 LP-E6 batteries off of eBay. No problems. Since I purchased my 6D, the price has dropped about 30% so I replaced with the new LP-E6N. $99 was highway robbery.

In general I've had a good experience with 3rd party batteries. I got some for my Canon Powershot 530 HS and they work great( the brand is OAproda). Better than the canon one actually. I tried to get some when I got my new camera (Canon EOS Rebel SL3) and they didn't fit. They gave me a full refund and I ordered from another brand (Up) and they work amazingly as well.

Peter, Very nice video, very well done and extremely useful to us. Your "Read More Below" is absolutely great and jam packed with good info. I Had some problems with third party batteries 8-12 years ago with short lifespan, but lately the third party batteries like Wasabi or Batteries purchased from B&H & Adorama are usually good. I am a retired Certified Radio & Television Engineer and use to shoot Weddings professionally (part time) in the 70's and 80's, and printed some of my photos on a Super Chromega Enlarger. My original Nikon D80 battery is still perfect from 2006. I use a Nikon D750 mostly now. My favorite software to work on photos is ACDSee 10 Ultimate and Thumbs Plus 10Pro.

Great video. How about a long term 2 year review of those 3rd party batteries? Many people do videos on them new. But, IME overtime (1yr - 18 months) their performance drops significantly vs the factory batteries.

The Wasabi batteries I have report full charge and then sudden begin to blink almost dead, then die very shortly after. They don't show gradual depletion like the real Canon batteries. This is true for my 7D2 and 5D3. That is a deal-breaker for event photography. I need reliable performance and reporting.

My problem with 3rd party batteries is that they don't all fully charge. Also, they build up gas and then you can't get them out of the camera. Having said that, the supplier gladly replaced them as they were only weeks old with the problem of not taking a full charge. But Nikon are not perfect either.
