"We wanted Sean to be a weak character by intention. Someone you would pick if you were good at the game and wanted to give the opponent an equal chance" is more of less how they phrased why Sean is the way he is. But Capcom didn't realise they unintentionally created a toxic expression of sandbagging/flexing in the form of intentionally winning with Sean. As in "I'm so good I could beat you with Sean of all characters". I have nothing against Joke characters, but I do believe they can be characterised/framed as such without actually being weak. Good video! A few notes: 4:12 - Ryu's denjin gains hits not only by rotating the stick, but also by pressing the other face buttons. So the best way to increase hits fast is to rotate the stick (hit diagonals) and mash the buttons you didn't use to activate SA3 (you have to hold that button as you charge the attack, so you can't mash that one as letting go of it sends the denjin flying). 6:12 - The juggle limit isn't 'extended' per se, but attacks that would usually reset the opponent just juggle them instead. If you, for instance, reach the juggle limit as you stun the opponent, you can't suddenly tack on more juggle hits, so the juggle limit itself stays the same. The Ryu combo shown works because his SA1 actually (always) resets the juggle value to 0, so the only thing that wouldn't have worked without the stun is the clLP, clLP to stHK at the end, as the clLP usually makes the opponent flip out and land on the ground. Instead, if the opponent isn't stunned you'd just finish the combo with a heavy DP instead. 6:40 - Just as a quick note, this is not a "true combo"; if Dudley quick stands the throw, the super will whiff. Of course, if the throw stuns, he can't quick stand, so the combo is guaranteed.
@aeiouiji5 ай бұрын
also for denjin, mashing the buttons and then immediately letting go after the super freeze still charges the super for more hits / stun. Useful!

The funny thing about akuma's far HK into demon is that it is a truly broken combo, probably unintended, because it needs the backturn animation to be able to combo into demon (backturned characters can be thrown even while in hitstun), but this animation isn't applied against every character. So the backturn was probably meant to be a visual/aesthetic thing and it accidentally gave akuma a combo

I love how Makoto's supers make her specialize in different ways but they all end with GINORMOUS DAMAGE SA1 is your typical punish super that deletes half of the life bar after a fatal error or a parry. Even scarier due to Makoto's strike throw gameplan so expect a raw super in the face or a super after grab SAIII is the weakest one of the three but you can steal rounds with this one. An install that prevents you from blocking but makes you deal big damage to your attacks. My favorite part is the absolute dread you impose onto your opponent that they can't get away from due to Makoto's mobility so they're forced to fight and they either win big or lose really hard

It still blows my mind how little its charm, style and weight has aged in the sea of retro games that are easy to appreciate but hard to want to get back into. Me and my uncle have spent entire weekends just trying to bump each other's scores to see who gets to wash the dishes today, we try out new characters to marvel at the animation and rad desings, and listen to the music while drawing together. We even got for the first time to watch this year's EVO tournament and had a blast watching it all the way thought. Third Strike is just something else. Even tho is almost 7 years older than me, it still feels like a game from the future, and very bright one at that. Full of passion, glory and some sweet, sweet beats in my head.

I'm a bit controversial because I think someone should make a "4th impact" of SF3 (and an Alpha/Zero 4 for that matter). Kind of like that mod of SF2 Turbo out there that rebalances the game and is really good, I would like to see someone take the SF3 engine and do a retool that rebalances the game but keeps in SF3 Third Strike's "game feel". Buff some of the low tiers, remove some glitches, that kind of thing.

Check out Street Fighter 3, 4rd Strike. It's a rebalance mod that gives characters new moves, buffs low tiers, nerfs high tiers a schmidge, and overall is fun. It's got an online community too thanks to Fightcade

Your vids are god like, loved it! There is also hadou walk, tech that i've seen in AutoMattock, which doesn't eat the parry input if you go from 3 to 6, anyway, this game must have a ton of stuff, just wanted to bring it up.
@AkiraSatou4 ай бұрын
I'm surprised you didn't cover Hugo's spd timer. In 3s hugo has an invisble timer of 32f roughly that when it expires it throws away all your inputs for an spd no matter where you were in the sequence, then the timer refreshes. And no this doesnt mean you can do 4 2 6 (wait 25f) 8P to get an spd if you're lucky on the timer position, it still follows standard special window rules with the caveat that yeah if youre just unlucky and do 426 (timer expires here) 8P you wont get an SPD. Its completely in the background of the game and you cant play around it, so even if youre perfect TAS level of inputs youll still just drop your spds. Only exception being after a parry the timer resets. So at least its consistent there

Admittedly, I'm not a fighting game player (even though I watch a ton of fighting game content), but 3rd Strike is one of those games that I don't fully understand where all the high praise comes from versus other fighting games that seem pretty similar (I feel the same way about Garou). My guess is that it comes from its high execution barrier and the sheer number of options you have and even then Chun's super seems to contradict that since there's no reason not to do that and is a long fixed animation. Granted, you can also parry that if you're a god, so it's pretty cool that even some of the cheapest options aren't always a guarantee. I'm also a big fan of Melee (though I'm not even remotely decent at it), which is another game praised for its high execution and depth. Though I've also been recently having a blast playing around with the one-button mode of that game and to me what makes that game so fun is the movement and gamefeel which later games severely lack. So I feel like execution doesn't necessarily have to mean deep or fun either.
@thisismybassgun5 ай бұрын
It's hard to articulate, but 3rd Strike just *feels* different. And yeah, the options for options for options on-top of options also comes into it. I feel the same about Garou, but I'm absolute garbage at it, that one draws me in because it's just so gorgeous (which is another thing about 3S, if hand drawn sprites are your jam) Not my *favorite* fighting game, but when I play it, it absolutely is. Edit: They said it wayyyyyy better under me.
@SuperLuigiKart645 ай бұрын
One of the reasons Third Strike started gaining such a following was the landscape of Capcom fighting games in the mid-late 2000s. A huge influx of players came in to the fighting game community at Street Fighter 4, which was derided by many old-time players for being too "skill-less" and "random", especially with its in-built comeback mechanic of Ultra Combos. These players sought to find a game that scratched their itch and turned away who they thought were "casuals". As Street Fighter 3 had sold quite poorly and was relatively lambasted in mainstream reviews for the original roster and 2D graphics, it was a game with a niche community that could be relied on to be what the SF4-exiles wanted. For its modern appeal, it's half the dedicated fanbase hyping up their own game, and the overall feeling of high execution in the game as you mentioned. One thing mentioned in the video that causes some level of acclaim is that fireballs and zoning are somewhat underpowered compared to other fighting games. Zoning is considered by some to be a "boring" and obnoxious playstyle, so the weakness of that strategy retains players who prefer up-close rushdown and mixups compared to navigating fireballs.

I think a big part of it comes down to both 3S and Garou having a very powerful universal defensive mechanic that the entire game evolves to revolve around. Parries and Just Defend make it so that any interaction has an additional dynamic; any move that would normally be safe or even plus, suddenly becomes punishable. In other fighting games, if I stick out a poke, I know one of four things is going to happen; 1. My opponent doesn't block it and I get a hit in 2. My opponent does block it, and I know I'm -/+ however many frames and can plan my next action accordingly 3. I whiff it and my opponent gets a whiff punish 4. I whiff it and my opponent doesn't get a whiff punish The inclusion of Parry and JD make it so that second point, instead branches out into at least 3 or 4 more subsequent branches. 2a. My opponent gets a successful Parry/JD against my poke and gets a punish 2b. My opponent gets a successful Parry/JD against my poke, but has to gamble on whether I can/will special cancel it and if they should go for the punish, or another Parry/JD to beat my special cancel 2c. I delay the timing of my poke to cause the Parry/JD timing to not lineup. 2d. I delay the timing of my poke and my opponent predicts that, pressing a button to beat the startup of my poke instead of trying to Parry/JD it Depending on how deep you want to get, that list could go on for ages with various permutations of how both players play around the Parry/JD mechanics, and that's without including things Garou letting you cancel JD into Guard Cancel moves. Other games, like many Arcsys fighters, have similar-ish mechanics like Instant Block, but few of them interact with not only block pressure, but also neutral, okizeme, jump ins, air to airs, and frankly every other conceivable situation that could arise in a fighting game to the same level as 3S parries and Garou's JD.

I don't think we should ban anyone but if we had to pick one it would be Chun over Yun. Chun is so boring to watch, yeah Genei Jin combos get stale after some time but Chun was never fun lmao, just bullshit normal pokes and SA punishes. Yun takes a ton of labbing and is easily top 2 hardest in the game well Chun is probably top 2 easiest. But still, I don't agree with a ban cause most tournaments are not that serious and have descent character representation. It's only huge event like Evo that are boring to watch.

I like parry on paper but I don't really like any mechanic that really rewards the great players while punishing the lower-mid players. Its kind of a "rich get richer" mechanic because its all about observation, frame data etc. which you get after many hours of playing, its not something you just suddenly are able to do one day. Also I hate doing it on the actual arcade stick, I can literally never make it react in time but I can do it well on keyboard and gamepad.

This video is misleading. A lot of these oki unblockables setups don't do any more damage than a lot of raw supers in the game. Therefore it's a unique gameplan but not a superior one. Chun Li simply has good buttons and a good super which is enough to make her better than all of this supposed "broken" tech.
