13:01 This is just speculation on my part, but at least part of the reason majority of anime and manga characters aren’t over a certain age is because of how young people are often portrayed in media. They’re old enough to think for themselves, but that doesn’t mean that they have the knowledge or experience to make the best choices. Basically, it’s a bit more understandable if a kid makes a stupid decision, and it can be entertaining, but it can be far more shameful, depressing, or just off-putting for adults.

It also has to due with the target demographic. A lot of the anime and manga that gets covered (and gets popular) are catered to the shonen (young boys) demographic, so the characters are usually around the same age as their target demographic. It can be seen as aspirational to see someone your age doing these things. That being said, we’re all getting older. We enjoy anime like we did when we were younger, but it’s definitely a lot weirder watching it now than when we watched it in middle/high school.

I mean, it's also because a lot of men have fetishes for girls who are too young to know better. It stretches credulity to think that an adult woman would be interested in any of the harem protagonists, but young women and girls can be kinda dumb and put up with a lot more bs from men. Combine that reality with the prevalence of weirdos who are sexually into girls who are _way_ too young, and you get harem anime where all the love interests are too young to legally drink.

I wouldn’t call Rentaro a full on self-insert. He’s referred to by the anime community as “a Chad that’s relationship goals” for a reason. Even before he got together with the 100 girls he’s considered very likable & attractive. AKA: The opposite of your average harem self-insert. When people think of harem self-inserts they think of characters who are losers both inside & out and the romance helps them develop. Or a blank slate of a generic guy that feels like a JRPG player. Rentaro is kinda the other way around, as he aims to help the girlfriends develop. At least that’s what my normie brain gets whenever I think of a harem protagonist based on the ones I’ve seen. And there’s a difference between inevitably dying & dying because a God made you die for not romantically getting together with someone. BIG DIFFERENCE!
