I just bought a Jade. I am going to transfer my BTC from a Ledger wallet to the Jade after the nonsense Ledger has been pulling lately. Is it just me or does the Jade setup seem pretty complicated? Maybe I’m just spoiled by how simple the Ledger process was. Say what you want about some of the recent actions of Ledger as a company but their products are user-friendly in my opinion.
@CryptoGuide Жыл бұрын
Firstly, Ledger is the best option is the market as far as user friendlyness goes, so yea it does spoil you a bit... That said, Jade is quite straightforward, the thing that complicated stuff in this video was that I didn't finish the initial setup before updating the firmware and that I also created a seed QR. (If you just use the Green wallet then it's much simpler)

Is the firmware already installed? How can you be sure it wasn't compressed? For example, Trezor comes without firmware.
@CryptoGuide8 күн бұрын
Firstly, Trezor actually does come with firmware pre-installed. (You can watch my DIY video for Trezor One to understand which part this is) Secondly, the model for secure boot on ESP32 is basically that once enabled, it will only run firmware signed with a specific key. So basically if you download and validate an official blockstream firmware and flash it using the Python scripts (Or just the official app) then if the device accepts the firmware, you can be sure that it was initialized with Blockstream's signing key.

Nice video. I have a ledger and looking to switch. This seems like the best choice. Tired of the ads ledger has and only care for BTC. If I make the switch how would you go about moving funds from ledger to jade? Just send the entire balance as a single UTXO? Or could I buy a jade and enter my 24 word pass phrase from my ledger in the jade. Is that possible? Another thing I like with ledger app is I am able to easily buy on cash app and send to my cold wallet without the device connected. Am I able to still do that with Jade? Thanks!

Thanks. In terms of your questions. You can simply use your 24 word seed from the Ledger with the Jade and it will "just work". :) Regardless of the Bitcoin wallet, you don't need any hardware or software to be online to receive a transaction. In your opinion, which one would you buy Keystone (Bitcoin Only) or Blockstream Jade? I mean considering the price right now since the Keystone right now has a discount and would stay at $89.. Without the discount, perhaps I would be more inclined towards the Jade, but with the discount, I am undecided, I know that both are very good, but which one would you tip the scales for?
@CryptoGuide Жыл бұрын
The main drawback to the Jade is that it does have a very small screen (This is part of the low price for Jade, which is still second to none as far as performance for the price), whereas devices like the Keystone do have a much nicer user experience and larger screen which makes using it in QR mode less fiddly. The Bitcoin Only firmware on the Keystone is very powerful and also supports things like SLIP39 for redundancy/security in the seed phrase, using dice for the entropy, etc. On the Jade side, Green wallet (The vendor supplied option for Jade) is also both powerful and easy to use, especially with a phone over Bluetooth. @CryptoGuide Жыл бұрын
Your pin needs a pinserver to unlock using the pin, this can either be one run by blocksteam or one you run yourself. You can also log in directly with a mnemonic or SeedQR if you don't want to use a PIN or if your pin server is down.
@EsseQuamVideri727 Жыл бұрын
@@CryptoGuide Thanks for a solid and fast reply. So basically, if you use a PIN for the device, it needs a pin server. Both are great, but Coldcard is quite a bit more expensive and doesn't currently support QR codes, so you need to be happy juggling MicroSD cards. It is safe to assume that north of 50% of viewers will be fairly new to the entire “crazy and often hostile environment” as you stated yourself, in which case anyone deciding to pull the trigger and try it would absolutely need a step by step guide without any assumption of previous knowledge, which is (I understand) difficult for someone building their own wallets, for example. To sort of answer your question, I installed green app on windows laptop and before plugging the device App had me choose the option of “storing keys on the computer” or “storing keys on the hardware device”, I got spooked as none of several tutorials mention this, why is that even an option? Well, most likely bc the App is designed to run both hot wallets and cold storage devices, but it’s only my assumption 1st, and 2nd, people running into unexpected decisions won’t gamble 20 bucks, let alone 200 or 2K without simplicity and clear guidance. All this in case we do want adoption, if not then none of this matters…

Just got my Jade and it's a mixed bag. For the money it seems ok, but the PC app crashed a few times on me. The QR feature isn't built into the Green app, it works off the browser and their site isn't working for me. I'd expect things to improve with time but for now it's just ok.
@CryptoGuide Жыл бұрын
I haven't had any issue with Green. So in terms of the QR login, are you saying that the PinQR helper website doesn't load at all for you?
@36trooper Жыл бұрын
@@CryptoGuide Correct. After I enter my pin on the jade it displays the animated QR code. I'll scan that with my phone but then it never displays the next QR for me to scan with the Jade. I'm gessing the servers were offline at the time? Not sure. I like the idea of it, but if the service is unreliable it kind of defeats the purpose of the air gap use case. Not the end of the world since I can just use the USB cable to unlock. That works fine with Green on the PC.

Would love your opinions on all of this Ps: thanks for getting me my bitcoin back. I will say thank you a million times because you’re the best.
@CryptoGuide Жыл бұрын
Basically seed is encrypted on your device locally, but needs some information from the remote server to be able to decrypt it. The Pin Server doesn't store any part of the seed or private keys. (this is why it's referred to as being blind) You can host your own PIN Server, or just use the device statelessly if don't want any secondary system to help secure the wallet. I think that Trezor is fine, but devices like the T are way overpriced for what they offer.

Great video, thank you for posting and sharing the link to comparisons page! I'm just starting on my search for $B only hodl solution, and trying to wrap my head around security tradeoffs. Regarding the comparison webpage, I'm curious why you scored coldcard's security higher than jade's security score, since coldcard has secure element? I heard the SE requires NDA and therefore is not fully open source? Many thanks :)
@CryptoGuide Жыл бұрын
There are a few things here. Firstly, if you go into the spreadsheet you will see why the security scores are different. Basically it mostly comes down to the Coldcard having extra features like a multiple duress type pins, easy adding of diy entropy and a two step PIN workflow that boosts physical security slightly. Devices like Coldcard and Bitbox02 use off the shelf, very simply secure elements that aren't really customisable and don't have any NDA for the developer. (Though from a licence perspective, Coldcard doesn't use an open source license) Functionality Jade and Coldcard are very similar and I'm really not sure the price premium for Coldcard is worth it at all.
