Honestly this just seems like a speedpaint medium. Which army painter is making that works really really well already.
@nikotillmann97644 күн бұрын
Yeah, I fail to see how this is different to Speed Paint, Contrast or Xpress Color Medium. Which can also be easily made as a DIY mix of matte medium, flow improver and water (I personally like midwinter medium).
@JustJoshinMagic7 күн бұрын
One thing I’d love to see is using this with paint through an airbrush. I love using my contrast paints in an airbrush, so I’d be curious to see how a speed paint made using this would compare
@BrendanPace7 күн бұрын
I'd say skip this specific medium if your going through the airbrush. My recommendation would be either a heavy dilution with pre-made airbrush medium (like the art supply company Golden's medium) or a custom mix of airbrush thinner, flow aid, and regular medium to get the same sort of mix.
@kimmotoivanen6 күн бұрын
How do they behave with airbrush? Do you use them for color, opacity (or lack of it 😉) or consistency? I guess you are not using so much, that they start to pool in recesses?
@zakhunt7 күн бұрын
Nice! Would love to see a comparison video between this and Newsh, Speedpaint Medium, and Contrast Medium, since they’re all basically supposed to be doing the same thing. 👍
@jamiehuebsch7 күн бұрын
^^ This.
@4ftBeaver7 күн бұрын
I think they do different things. Newsh is more of an oil wash substitute and can be wiped off, which is a different step from speed paints. Contrast and speed paint medium don’t work quite as well to make speed paints, because they are more to dilute your speed paints (which sometimes have overpowering color when you want more subtle transitions) and are missing some part of the speed paint formula or are more dilute. The Cuttlefish compound seems to include that last part of the formula to make a normal paint into a speed paint. This probably has a slightly higher amount of whatever causes the speed paint to pool in recesses and avoid the high spots to make up for mixing with paints that don’t already have that compound.
@ryanlopezdevinaspre7 күн бұрын
I would like to see this as well, though I would add the Monument Hobbies Glaze And Wash Medium, which I think is probably closer to this and the speed paint and contrast mediums than Newsh is, I think. Newsh is meant to emulate an oil wash, as I understand it, and the Monument Hobbies glaze and wash medium is more like a contrast medium. I have both of those products, though I haven't used either extensively yet. I would be curious to see if there's any meaningful difference between them. However. I'm not sure if army painter and citadel make theirs available in large quantities either. This one and the monument hobbies products all come in nice, large bottles, which is nice and cost effective.
@zakhunt7 күн бұрын
Ahh yes, thank you, I was mixing up Newsh with their other mediums. I bought all of them but haven’t used them yet either 😆

I've been using the original formula of this for about a year at this point, it was originally Merlin's Magic Medium. It's literally my favorite discovery from PAX Unplugged last year, and appears to be the same/very similar formula. I even have the color and ratio sheet to get different consistencies with it, and met the team that helped develop the original medium and cuttlefish color paint line, which is one of my favorites to use. I highly recommend it.
@ModernSynthesist7 күн бұрын
Since this isn't available yet, and Cuttlefish Colors can be hard to get a hold of, Warcolours offers a similar solution in a big bottle that they just call Contrast Medium. They're pretty much exclusively online and ship from Cypress, but I've had great service from them and love their Nostalgia paint lines.

One of the main reasons I don't use speedpaints is because I don't want to buy more paints and take up more shelf space. So for me this is worth checking out.
@VaultBoy136 күн бұрын
I'm on the opposite end. Ever since buying speed paints, I use them about 80% of the time. When I want a highlight color, I mix the speed paint with some white or off-white paint. (Or, if it's something like red, I might mix in a yellow.) Sometimes I need to thin that with some flow improver. But, my normal acrylic paint usage is mostly just white, off-white, black, yellow, and metallics. To be fair, I'm not painting to a Lyla standard. I'm either painting until it looks good on the table, and with a handful of things I display them on a shelf.

Thanks for your insights Lyla. I have a medium sized set of AP speed paints but like others have used acrylic artists mediums, flow aids etc for years. I can see how this Cuttlefish medium would be a great tool to reduce the cost and space for anybody wanting to experiment.
@VanHoering7 күн бұрын
Another great alternative to contrast paints and shades is raiding the arts supply store. Get yourself a bunch of acrylics inks for callygraphy, such as Dahler Rowney's FW line or the Liquitex ones. Grab a bottle of matte acrylic medium and flow aid as well. With a mix of ink, water and medium, plus a liberal dash of flow-aid, you can emulate either contrast paints (with a 50/50 medium to water base) or shades (with more of a 75/25 water to medium ratio). Works a treat. I just keep a bunch of old junk minis at hand as test subjects and write down the proportions in a notebook once I get it right. You can even come up with your own cheezy names for your mixes like the real paint manufacturers do! :D The only downside to my method is, I had to go and bunch of those inks and they're just as expensive as the GW contrast paints, but for the same price you get a bigger bottle and you can make pints of DYI contrast paint out of each one. And you wouldn't get anywhere near the potency of GW's stuff with regular opaque paints instead of inks. Not with my recipe anyway. ;)
@philgee4866 күн бұрын
Yup, been doing this since Brent's vid waaay back, soon after the contrast line was first released. Base the pigmentation on rich saturated ink (mixes) use pretty much any medium to reduce the opacity and then control how the mix breaks over the raised detail and settles in the recesses by adding flow improver. Adding airbrush thinner or water controls how strongly it stains the primer/base paint layer, as does using an opaque paint to the ink whilst mixing your colour. I'd stay away from the Daler-Rowney inks as some of the colours are very rightly criticised for their light fastness over time. This all sounds like a lot to manage, but it really isn't once you get started and the contrast world is your absolute oyster for beautifully adjustable and controllable paint of any shade or colour you could want using materials you likely already have on your desk. I'm not a fan of the contrast "one and done" process at all, but they got me using layers and overlays of transparent paint to very quickly create all sorts of different colours for detailing a base painted model when army/unit painting and thy don't then have that really unreal look of one single colour settled over a whiteish base with just the opacity varying, rather than having tones and highlights and/or variation in hue according to the direction of the light. If you're just blobbing it on then you really are never painting the light across a model.

Interesting video but I miss the point where this behaves differently to existing products. Thus I have my mediums for my pro acryl as well as my spedpaint medium for 2.0 range and I´m just fine together with water thinning + the airbrush thinners and flow improvers.
