I love the mix in the comments from grim dark 40k guys to tippy hatted witchy ladies. It's very wholesome.

Nice. I’m actually a bit color blind, so a formulaic approach really helps me!

I have a wide assortment of paints. These have been accumulated over 30 or 40 years and have to be thrown out at times for drying out, having stuck lids, and other problems. I find that I find a certain paint that works for a certain use and use that until I find a better or the paint is no longer usable. I have some paints that are alcohol based, some with metal caps, many that are just specialty, one-of-a-kind paints. I even have one line that gives me a good selection of horse colors. GW Contrast paints have been very useful for me and make washes less necessary. I am looking at Army Painter Speed paints to replace the stupid GW paint containers.

Layering for me is the hardest technic in the book. Even when it looks basic when is (usually poorly) explained it's a technic for the masters. Usually you can go by your hobby life popping some lights and borders, some washes and a couple of tricks. There's something in this video that clicked with me. I want to enter a competition and my usual tricks won't cut it there, so this video was great to push me to start to get out my confort zone and try to properly paint something 😀 I love the mini and the painting, btw.

I see a lot of videos like this - and there're great!! Very helpful. However, I always hear some variation of, "You can just smooth the transitions with glazing," with no instruction on how to do so. Do you have a video that explains this "smoothing by glazing" technique?

One thing I wish I knew when I started: how does one avoid rubbing off the paint when you have to rest painted bits of a mini on your skin to get to other parts? I never see advanced painters have this problem, but I have it a lot.

At 2:46 your brush comes back into frame having just been cleaned to avoid contamination but then at 2:51 you go straight from the mix back to your dark colour 🤷♂

Nice tips! I don't use a wet palette because my brain can't deal with it, but I do something kind of similar with a dry palette, I just do the mixing as I go along. I bought acrylic drying retardant the other day to give me some options for mixing. The secret I wish I knew when I was starting back in June is: painting miniatures is not like painting something on a canvas. You'd think it'd be obvious that painting something 3D with its own crevasses and whatnot is different from painting something on a flat surface.

What took me way too long to figure out: It's not about the water in the paint, but the amount of water in the brush. A 1:1 color water mix can already be perfect for painting, when brushed out correctly before applying the paint to the mini. Also: Just start painting! If you fuck up, dip the mini in isoprop for a day, brush the paint off with a toothbrush and try again. No mini is ever truly ruined by a paint job.

Have you worked with the colored minis from Hero Forge? They're really great, but I'm wondering what I can do to really up the visual pop. Some of the metallic colors in particular look very matte, and have sharp edges between highlights and shadows. I've got a silver metal rod on one that is just light grey on top and black on bottom, no in-between.
@latias272Күн бұрын
I'm very amused to find that this is actually my current process! And I've been drifting more towards a smoother blending/gradient style recently. I love how different people's painting journey's take them down different paths but with similar stops along the way.

The secret I wish I knew was that there is far more to shading and highlighting than just adding black and white to the midtone. And there is so much value to using and mixing in "interesting" colors for shadows and highlights. I think of it as traversing the coloring wheel and changing hue when layering shadows and highlights rather than just relying on changes in value.

Hey Lyla. I have been trying to use a wet palette for years and I have ALWAYS ran into a serious problem: My paints keep separating. It doesnt matter how much I shake the bottles, how wet/dry the palette is, they always end up a watery mess that has lost its opacity. Am I alone in this issue? Nobody else I've talked to has ever experienced this, and it's really hampered my painting, which sucks bc I do it for a side hustle for MUCH needed money. 😩 Any suggestions?
