Had the machine shop tap the oil galleries on a buick V6 for a jeep back in the day. They tapped them ,but left them loose. Primed it, started it, and we got oil seeping from the bellhousing area. We pulled the transmission/transfercase and finished what they had started. No harm as it had good pressure. Also had to pull the front apart to check the other end. At least they gave me a case of oil, and few gaskets, and some cash back. After that I always checked.

A little bit of oil won’t hurt the timing chain but in the off chance that the plug backs itself out it would be very very bad. A little bit of blue medium threadlocker gives me peace of mind....

I was just wondering if there was anyway you could post a link to the cam you were going to use here as well as point me in the right direction of a good master rebuild kit. Thank you for posting these videos, they really are extremely helpful and motivating for someone like myself. Thank you and have wonderful day!

I love seeing you build the Jeep 4.0 six. Thanks for documenting it for others to benefit from. Any chance that you would consider building an AMC 360 or 401 V8? A lot of old AMC era Jeeps still running those motors.

Thanks for doing these videos. They helped immensely! However, I at the point of installing cam shaft position sensor shaft and oil pump. Your video jumps from putting the timing chain cover on, to an engine with the oil pan on and getting ready to put the head on. I would really like to see how you made sure the cam position sensor was lined up properly and what, if any gasket maker (RTV) did you use on the oil pan (in addition to the standard gasket). Those always leak! Also, did you video any of the head assembly with the lifter/push rod/rocker arm assembly? That would really help to see those. BTW - My engine is from a 2001 XJ. I had to replace a cracked head and they had overheated the engine, trashing the pistons. Thanks. Excellent job!

I am really loving these videos! I'm learning so much. I am having a 4.0L built right now. I was planning to keep it stock but you mention a different cam for greater low end torque. My rig is really being used off road for exploring & crawling. Will I get significant increase in torque if I change the cam? What do you recommend? (brand, lift, duration, etc.)

I liked the attention to the balancer. Me being a novice, my 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee apparently had the "harmonic balancer" fail, per the Jeep dealer (at 160,000 miles). Are these the same parts? If so, how the heck does it just fail?

Love your informative videos. I'm getting ready to rebuild a 4.2 liter 258. Going with a GM HEI, MC2100 2 bbl and considering doing a 4.0 head swap. Question is what 4.0 head would be the best for this. Going to possibly add fuel injection later on but will use the carb for now. Also could you recommend a good mid-range cam for this engine? Something good for low end torque and higher RPM'S, best of both worlds I guess you could say.
@skylinefever
@skylinefever 6 жыл бұрын
The best head would probably be the Edelbrock aluminum head. However, those are extremely expensive. Also, if you get one, it is best to buy it bare and have a cylinder head expert precisely assemble it and use really good valves and other parts. There are replacement 4.0 cylinder heads made of iron that cost far less. They also have extra iron where the OEM heads are likely to crack. Some eBay stores even sell them with oversize valves installed, and some people even sell them with porting already done. I don't know your budget, so I can't give perfect advice.

I hope someone here can help me, I have a Cherokee with the 4.0 and I am currently trying to replace the head gasket. I have a similar block to what is shown in this video with coolant passages going between the block and the head around the head bolt holes but every head gasket I have bought and can find online does not have these holes. Does it not matter if those holes are covered by the gasket? The last time I did the gasket I had trouble bleeding coolant, I am not sure if that would be due to these passages being blocked

Isn't there a retainer that keeps that camshaft from moving in and out of the block, or does that pin and spring do that? I think the 2000-2006 4.0 has a plate with a big hole and two bolt ears on it.

@skylinefever
@skylinefever 6 жыл бұрын
I depends on how much a new engine costs and how much the rebuild in your situation costs. Some all new engines aren't that expensive, and some engines that are heavily damaged actually cost more than a 100% new engine.

Some cams will advertise "Compatible with stock computer" Some will advertise "Compatible with reprogrammed stock computer" and then some will advertise that major changes that are needed. On thing I have read is that with popular Ford engines, there are situations where some cams are compatible with all computerized engines, and others will only be compatible with mass air EFI. A "Mass Air" engine uses a sensor that directly measures how much air is entering the engine. Engine that aren't "Mass Air" use a pressure sensor in the intake manifold and then use charts that calculate incoming air by calculating how much vacuum the engine pulls. The Jeep 4.0 is not a Mass Air EFI engine, so it is more likely to be affected by changing cams.
