I was "caught" speeding in Italy fourteen years ago on my R1, on the autostrada north of Naples I flew past an Alfa Romeo just realising it was a cop car as I passed it, I of course slowed way down only for the Alfa to pull level and the cop in the passenger seat gave me the international sign to wind it on, I duly obliged. on that trip I found the Italian cops love bikes and only ever stopped me to have a look at the bike and some even showed me pictures of their own bikes, a real bike and biker loving country!

This video made me very sad because it just goes to prove what I have suspected for some years - I can no longer really visit the Alps on my own 999. I've done all the passes, several of them many times. I once did 12 of them in one day on an 851. But although I live in Switzerland, I just haven't dared to head out there for some time because I live in fear of something like this happening. You cannot ride an 999 legally in Switzerland. It can't be done. If you tried you'd have much more fun taking the train. Ever since they changed the law in 2012 or 2013 it has been the death knell for sports biking in this country, a place that was once the world mecca for biking. Very, very sad.

Reading a few of the comments below. The problem is they weren't riding like idiots, they are two experienced motorcyclists and as he said it's just a quick squirt of throttle to go "x2". Didn't see anything over the top in their riding. I am a retired traffic cop from Ireland and would have been very reluctant to enforce that rate of punishment, fortunately we were allowed to think for ourselves and use our discretion, sometimes a word of advice pointing out what could happen is appropriate, log them on the system has having received a warning and then play it by ear if they're caught again.
@RON5804156 жыл бұрын
Here in Switzerland I'm afraid if you get stopped by the police you are either a) going to get fined or b) going to prison. End of. The police are given no training in discretion. It is also illegal to have dash cams and the like as it is an infringement of the privacy laws. So they were very lucky they didn't have all their camera gear confiscated. This also applies to speed camera detectors and speed camera apps on your navi system. As mentioned elsewhere in the replies most bikers here "scout the course" and keep an eye open for the oncoming bikes who will always let you know if something is coming up: Having said all of that Switzerland is still a great place to do bike tours, but if you want speed you have to go to Germany.

Thank you for another awesome episode, despite the mishaps. I somewhat feel your frustration as Switzerland is a beautiful yet dangerous animal to handle. I grew up in Italy but lived in Leicestershire for many years and now in Switzerland, there is a certain period needed to adjust to the fact that speed limits are really enforced and its a big risk; with that being said there is a massive biking community in Switzerland and most of them are ready to take that risk, its a part of the life here and I somewhat respect them for it (as you may have noticed people still driving the shit out of those bikes in CH). Being an avid track day goer I would say it is not an issue, in fact probably nicer than being in the UK; in Switerland you are at the center of some of best European tracks and they are all accessible, but I would visit the UK if I wanted to ride on a damp bumpy track. Also you guys rode from UK to do Mugello, that is a trek!! Have fun and looking forward to the next one!!!
@disekjoumoer6 жыл бұрын
Thing is, you can't do track days in Switzerland because there none. Everyone knows bikers go above the limit, but the lengths one has to go to avoid being caught is ridiculous. In Canada (at least in Ontario) for that speeding fine you're looking at $2,000 to $10,000, demerit points, bike confiscated, license suspension and jail time. Depends on where it happens, always worse in urban or construction areas. Police have a lot of room to decide the size and extent of the punishment. The biggest speeding fine on road around these parts was in Alberta, $12,000 to a biker going 264km/h. So even though it sucks you were fined, be glad it was just that, it could've been much worse as you said.

You have to be aware when visiting Switzerland. I was riding with RJ recently and I'm surprised we both kept our licenses. If you get a fine letter sent to outside CH and won't pay your fine, return to CH and get stopped at the border, you get chucked in jail. Two days for doing a white line to precise. Anyway, very well made video as always!

@cisium11846 жыл бұрын
Hell, it costs more than some NEW motorcycles.
@Sexyoldgeraldorivera6 жыл бұрын
Maybe their thinking is that if you sell it, you can pay the fine. they were looking to just do an outright ban on motorcycles a over a decade ago but doing it this way ensures plenty of profit through tourism, speeding fines, impounding and auctioning off the motorcycles all the while discouraging their use by the locals. The swiss government are absolute scum.

That's insane. Every brutal dictator can park his blood money in Switzerland, no matter what crimes he has committed. Nothing happens, everything is fine. But for speeding, you end up in jail in Switzerland. A country in which I wouldn't even want to be buried.

Aftermakert exhaust are usually not a problem, if you have a E-Nr. on the exhaust (street leagle) and exhaust papers for the bike. But if they want the can still messure the db and if its too loud you could get a ticket. Akra, Termi, Yoshi etc. are mostly fine (street legal version) not race exhaust..

Apparently there’s no cap to the fines either.. Above 30km/h too fast (outside urban areas) it’s income dependent.. A Swedish dude did 300km/h in an SLS AMG, got a 720.000 Euro fine.. let that sink in for a minute. I never understand people speeding in Switzerland, the risk is just too silly.
@n00bkill6 жыл бұрын
How do they find out your income? Especially if you're from overseas
@Renzsu6 жыл бұрын
That I don't know, but how it works is that they determine an amount between 1 and 3000 Swiss Francs (income determines this) and that amount is multiplied by a factor that is calculated by your infraction. Probably Swiss authorities will have contact with your local authorities and possibly tax office.. I wouldn't know about that. edit: jail is also a possibility... yes, also for speeding. I'd probably take the French/Monaco route to Italy next time .. ;)
@eberbacher0076 жыл бұрын
I guess they will ask for some form of tax statement proving your income and if you can´t deliver that or they don´t believe you they will do "professional estimation" aka guessing

Swiss tunnels are a BIG no no. Entrances and exits of tunnels are generally where cameras are located so any tunnel long or short you stick to the speed. They also set up big old cameras on tripods pointing both directions on known ripping spots. If you want a safety net, get a radar detector and hide it if you're stopped.
