I panicked when, having listened to Thorsby the Great’s lectures on Terms, Language, and Fallacies, I did not receive from KZbin a suggestion for Categorical Propositions. A happy soul is now writing this note merrily after having found his Polaris.

This is such a wonderful resource, thanks so much! I’m starting university in September and using the quarantine to get a grounding in some of the courses I’d like to take. I’m generally more of an intuitive person and viewed logic as a bit of a pedantic branch of philosophy. I slightly resented deductive logic as a required credit as I’m more drawn to the ideas of philosophy and would rather see arguments in action with meaningful content, but I’ve been absolutely fascinated by it and I’m super excited for my course now!

I was wondering about the word "not" in the propositions. Couldn't there be forms like: All non-S are P All S are non-P (which is the same as No S are P) All non-S are non-P Some non-S are P Some S are non-P (Same as Some S are not P) Some non-S are non-P I can see that some of those forms are equivalent to the ones you presented (in parentheses above), but I'm not sure if they all are. For instance: All non-S are P might be the same as No P are S (the predicate becomes the subject and vice-versa), but it might not (e.g. All non-S are P, but Some S are also P). Anyway. Great lessons! I'm enjoying them a lot.

Question: Am I correct to assume that standard form only matters when you're using mood and figure to determine the truth value of a proposition? What I mean is that, if you placed a proposition (or the components of a sorities) in a form that ran from minor premise to major premise, and then used Venn diagrams to prove it, it should give you the same conclusion about its validity... right?

Hi Papapa417, yes, you are right the entire "dogs" circle must be placed within the "animals" circle and that is exactly what is being represented in the video. Remember that when you fill a circle you are deleting that section. Filling a section of a circle is the same as removing the section. So I'm not sure what you are referring to besides your as hominem fallacy.
