No joke, even it's a small one by CA's history of quakes. It's still frightening as all heck because your entire world of surroundings is shaking, nowhere to run. I was asleep on a bed on rollers on a hardwood floor when the San Fernando earthquake (also known as the 1971 Sylmar earthquake) occurred February 9 @ 6:00 AM PST in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains in southern California. The UNANTICIPATED thrust earthquake had a magnitude of 6.5 (M6.5) on one scale & M6.7 on another. My German Shepherd dog jumped up howling before the shaking started by several seconds. My Los Angeles High School main building was 4 stories as it was a historical & beautiful structure. (Trivia: It is the H.S. shown in the old TV series Room 222). The exterior walls of the main "pre-Field Act" building (constructed 1917) were unreinforced brick masonry, long portions of the parapet and the associated brick veneer broke off and some large fragments fell through the roof to a lower floor! My previous Mt. Vernon Jr High School was also destroyed. Had that quake occurred just a little later in the AM the death toll would have been much higher. BUT the damage to homes, municipalities, transportation was immense. The earthquake resulted in 65 deaths (mostly from The Olive View Medical Center and Veterans Hospital both experiencing collapsed buildings), and more than 2,000 people injured. Property damage losses totaled more than half a billion dollars. My grandmother (91 yrs. old back in 1968), whom I met & stayed with in her San Francisco home, as she described her being in the 1906 CA 7.9 quake where > 3000 people died which was not as a direct result of the quake, but mostly from the massive fire that ensued. She said it was like a war zone, they barely made it out. The boundary of the Pacific and North America tectonic plates that form California's sleeping giant-the San Andreas Fault (more than 800 miles) - has a 75% chance of producing an M7 earthquake. We used to sing the 1968 SHANGO song Day After Day = "Day after day, more people come to L... A... Don't you tell anybody, the whole place's slipping away. Where can we go, when there's no San Francisco? Better get ready to tie up the boat in Idaho!"

Someone who experienced the 7.8 richter earthquake in Nepal in 2015, these earthquakes are very moderate. We had to run outside to an open ground and then we were actually swaying like we were in a boat caught in big waves.. It was 9 yrs ago but today, I felt the same nervousness. There is a very different feeling when the earth shakes from the underneath... brought back the old memories.
