Great video. It's also very encouraging mpg wise. I was surprised that the computer actually showed a better fuel economy even though you were running at a higher rpm. Since for my next build, I'm planning on using 40" tall tires and Ouverson 4.90 gears in 2.5 ton Rockwell axles front and rear. I was really worried that mpg would severely suffer from using 4.90 gears. Many people kept saying that I would need to use 5.13, or 5.38 gears if I wanted to use 37" or 40" tires if I want decent acceleration. Don't really know why they recommended the 5.13 or 5.38 gears. I just never talked with anyone that actually ran 40" tall tires and 4.88 gears in REAL LIFE. Thanks

Do your tires rub on the lift springs when your turn all the way?
@NoHalfAss
@NoHalfAss 4 ай бұрын
No. They did with the previous set of wheels but these ones have a -44 offset so they don’t rub. They only rub if I’m turned all the way coming out of a driveway or over a dip that causes the leaf springs to compress or something. But otherwise I can turn 100% in both directions without rubbing.

@NoHalfAss
@NoHalfAss 2 жыл бұрын
I have 40 15.50s, so my tires are wider than yours and they don’t rub with -44 offset. Unless I’m at full crank and going over bumps or something. So you can get slightly more negative offset to have even more clearance. I preferred getting new wheels over adding spacers.

2200rpm at 70mph is good, my dually with 4.10's towing the 5th wheel turns 2200-2300rpm at 70mph. Tip for ya, how about programming the Edge to read mph and rpm's that way you can film better. Also the transmission temps will range anywhere from 60-80 degree's over outside temps so 164 degrees is fine considering how hot it is outside.

3.55’s will make it harder to tow. The truck was designed from the factory with the right gear ratio (3.73s) for stock tires ready to tow. So unless you are towing something reallyyyy heavy and pushing the limits with your trucks tow capacity, I would leave the gear ratio stock with stock tires.

Your videos are awesome brotha! Just got my first diesel and have been using your videos for information with my build. What gear ratio would you recommend for a 7.3 4x4 Excursion with 4” lift and 35’s? I’ve been talking to 3 shops and 2 recommended 4.56 and the last one recommended 4.30. I have a large 30’ trailer and go from riverside to Parker about 3 times a year. I mostly use the truck for long family trips and do 80-85 on the freeway. Also do you recommend the Edge CTS3 tuner or Insight monitor and Hydra chip? Thanks for all the good info man

If you only tow 3 times a year and you’re on 35s, I probably wouldn’t waist the money to regear it. 35s are barely larger than stock. I ran 37s on stock gears for years. If you towed every other weekend, or even once a month then maybe. But you won’t enjoy cruising at 80-85 if you put 4.56s in. That’s just my opinion. You should get a mishimoto trans cooler to help lower your trans temps, and the hydra is by far my favorite tuner. I’ve had the edge tuner, superchips, and now the hydra and it’s the best by far. And you can use it in a “tow” tune while pulling your trailer and I think you’ll be fine.

And a monitor is a good idea for sure so you can watch your engine oil temps, trans temps, and I recommend getting an EGT probe so you can monitor exhaust gas temperatures as well. This is the one I use: amzn.to/2xHTHso You would need to buy the EGT probe adapter to read exhaust gas temps on the edge monitor. Or you can just use the monitor to read everything else and buy an individual gauge for EGTs. I’ve got 2 gauges coming in the mail now, one for boost and one for EGTs.

@@NoHalfAss my up pipes are bad should I go for the KC300 Turbo upgrade? Was it worth the money in your experience with it?
@NoHalfAss
@NoHalfAss 3 жыл бұрын
@@allenmahan7122 it depends bro. I didn’t see a huge difference in boost with the new turbo, however most people do so I think something is wrong somewhere with my truck and I just haven’t taken the time to figure it out. Haha. KC turbos think I have leaks somewhere and say that I should be getting well over 30 psi but I don’t think I do. We’ll find out when I get the new boost gauge. But it was nice because my stock turbo was getting turbo bark and the new one doesn’t, and I shouldn’t have to worry about blowing my turbo unexpectedly anytime soon.

Are you going to calibtrate the speedo now that the gears are in?
@NoHalfAss
@NoHalfAss 3 жыл бұрын
Maybe. I’ve never done any research on how to do it so I don’t know if it’s super simple to do or not. But I might actually go up to 42s at some point so not sure if I want to calibrate the speedo if I’m just gonna change tires size again. Hahaha

I’ve only driven the truck a few times so far so haven’t been able to notice a difference yet! But I think my MPGs will be better around town cuz the truck gets up and moves so much easier so I don’t have to accelerate as hard as before.
