To follow up on our United State Flag tier list, we decided to do a European Nation Flag Tier List! Which European flags do you love, and which do you think are the ugliest? Also, please don't flame us, we're know we're just 4 Americans (and one Canadian!), and at the end we do say we ultimately like Europe's flags more overall, but this was just our opinions on European flags!

Yep, I always thought that our flag (Kazakhstan) looked the best xD. Both colour wise and design wise. Btw, while technically we’re in Eurasia (a small tip of land is in Europe and the rest is in Asia), we consider ourselves to be part of Central Asia, so people might get confused when they see it in the list of European countries 😂

Fun fact about my country's (the Netherlands') flag: Originally it had different colors. It had orange instead of the deep red it has now (y'know, because of the House of Orange) and the blue was a much lighter shade. The reason the design changed, IIRC, is because the Dutch spent the next few centuries building a naval mercantile empire and those colors tended to fade pretty fast in the salty air of the high seas. And because we're cheapskates, we just changed the design to save on the cost of constantly replacing the flags. Hence the subdued boring-ass colors it has now. This old design was called the Prinsenvlag (prince's flag, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince's_Flag ). Unfortunately it was then appropriated by Dutch Nazis, which makes it decidedly less cool, but I like the color scheme. Wonder if it would've ranked higher or lower on this tier list than the current Dutch flag?

Me (Turkish): always grumbling about how I want to leave, complaining that the economy sucks, living here is a nightmare and ppl are so intolerant Also me: omg hell yes our flag is so good! In this video: SaveData team get cancelled in 80% of European countries. 😛 Also, the asymmetrical cross on the Union Jack has a use. Shipping in distress would fly it upside-down as a not-too-obvious distress signal.

As a Norwegian I’m sincerely happy you guys like the Nordic flags. The best thing about them for me when I was a kid was that they’re easy to draw for homework assignments in first grade. Like imagine living in Turkmenistan and getting the assignment “draw the national flag”…

Its aspect ratio is different from most of the other flags so it looks like it was cropped weirdly.

I believe this is in reference to a part of the stream that wasn’t included where we were using a different tier list that, for some reason, had a geographical picture of Ireland instead of the flag 😅 we were all talking about it and Elise, who hasn’t seen it, said “whoa whoa whoa, what’s wrong with Ireland!?”

I can't believe I missed this stream! This was such a fun idea A little trivia about why the Romania and Moldova flags look so similar: The Republic of Moldova used to be Romanian territory until around WW2 (90% sure it happened before the war), when it was taken by Russia. With Romania being added to the USSR after WW2, the territory Moldova is in (which was called Basarabia at the time) remained separate from the rest of the country, despite both of them keeping the same flag, the tricolor with the eagle coat of arms. When Romania revolutionized for independence in 1989, the coat of arms was ripped/cut out of the tricolor flag that protestors waved around, which is why post-1989 Romania no longer has the symbol. Moldova had its own revolution a year or so later, and chose to remain and be recognized as its own independent state, rather than go back to being a part of Romania again. This is why there's two countries right next to each other with basically identical flags😅

@@luftim Most of it isn't, true, but a small part is (it's the old 'problem' of most of the Asia/Europe border being on firm land and therefore you can make arguments about where one starts and the other ends), so you can definitely include its flags in a tier list for European flags, just like Turkey or Russia, especially since this is just for fun. I do love the Albanian flag too though :D

@@luftim This comes back to the "official" European borders being weird; Europe stretches further east in the north than in the Middle East. There's like a tiny section of Kazakhstan that stretches beyond the Ural Mountains to the West, and since they are generally taken as the border, that part does belong to Europe. Does it make a lot of sense? Probably not, and politically it certainly doesn't belong to Europe, but it is what it is :D

The design of Austria’s flag is a bicolor triband. Separately, the flags of Andorra, Chad, Moldova, and Romania, are similar to each other.

Spain flag: "It's a time wher if they have the national motto" "they don't" WHAT did you think the Plus Ultra is? Also about our crest. That's literally the crest of the kingdoms composing Spain. The castle for Castilla, the lion for Leon, The bars for Aragón, the chains for Navarra, the poegrenate in the bottom for Granada. So yeah. It's not a random crest. It's literally the 5 Kingdoms of Spain together.

The Patriarchal cross is a variant of the Christian cross, the religious symbol of Christianity, and is also known as the Cross of Lorraine. Similar to the familiar Latin cross, the patriarchal cross possesses a smaller crossbar placed above the main one so that both crossbars are near the top. Sometimes the patriarchal cross has a short, slanted crosspiece near its foot (Russian Orthodox cross). This slanted, lower crosspiece often appears in Byzantine Greek and Eastern European iconography, as well as in other Eastern Orthodox churches. In most renditions of the Cross of Lorraine, the horizontal bars are "graded" with the upper bar being the shorter, though variations with the bars of equal length are also seen. The Russian Orthodox cross can be considered a modified version of the Patriarchal cross, having two smaller crossbeams, one at the top and one near the bottom, in addition to the longer crossbeam. One suggestion is the lower crossbeam represents the footrest (suppedaneum) to which the feet of Jesus were nailed. In some earlier representations (and still currently in the Greek Church) the crossbar near the bottom is straight or slanted upwards. In later Slavic and other traditions, it came to be depicted as slanted, with the side to the viewer's left usually being higher. Another form of the cross was used by the Jagiellonian dynasty. This cross now features on the coat of arms of Lithuania, where it appears on the shield of the Vytis. It is also the badge of the Lithuanian Air Force and forms the country's highest award for bravery, the Order of the Cross of Vytis. The Jagiellonian cross is also used on the coat of arms and flags of every Lithuanian county. The Patriarchal Cross appears on the Vytis (Pahonia), used at various times as the coat of arms of Lithuania for centuries and of Belarus for four years. A two-barred cross is similar to a Latin cross but with an extra bar added. The lengths and placement of the bars (or "arms") vary, and most of the variations are interchangeably called the cross of Lorraine, the patriarchal cross, the Orthodox cross or the archiepiscopal cross. The two bars can be placed tight together (condensed) or far apart. They can be symmetrically spaced either around the middle, or above or below the middle. One asymmetrical variation has one bar near the top and the other just below the middle. Finally the bars can be of equal length, or with one shorter than the other. The ends of the arms can be decorated according to different styles. A style with round or rounded ends is called treflée or botonée (from French bouton) in heraldic use. The same style is called budded, apostles' or cathedral cross in religious use. A straight and pointy style called pattée also includes maltese cross variations, and finally a pointed style called aiguisé. The crosses appear in heraldic use in the second century A.D.[5] A balanced cross is used in the Coat of arms of Hungary as well as in several small shields within shields of Vytis. An outlined balanced cross (equal length outlined bars on equal distances) is used on coat of arms shields and order medals. In Slovakia, the flag, the coat of arms and several municipal symbols include a double cross, where graded bars are more common than equally long bars, and balanced distances along the vertical line are more common. The two-barred cross was also, since around the year 1140, used in Kopnik, Branibor (currently Berlin, Brandenburg) as seen on one of the five emissions of the silver bracteate of Iakša (Jaxa), a Christian state, fief of Poland (archbishops of Gniezno), coined until its invasion and destruction by Germanic "Wendish Crusade" of 1147.

As a Polish person, I agree that just based on looks our flag isnt the best. (Disclaimer: I do not represent the views of all Polish people in case someone didn't know that)

Anyways first reaction: 0:00 what in the actual frick is this? 2:26 first impressions, and the contrast of the tier names and the seriousness in assessment of the flags is a nice contrast, good show. Also nice that I was caught off guard and then pleasantly surprised 5:53 Red holds a lot of power here... 19:33 The fact it's still an A for Zak is mind blowing 22:04 Never realized how adamant Jason is about flags

1:13:07 The 4 C's means Only the unity can save the Serbs. and as for crown. The crown is positioned centrally in relation to the vertical axis of the shield and the heads of the eagles. The crown is golden, decorated with forty white pearls, eight blue sapphires and two red rubies, and on top of the crown there is a cross. Crowns represent Sovereignty, not Royalty, so Serbia, Montenegro and San Marino have them on theirs despite all being republics. There are probably other examples of republics with crowns on their flags too

As both a Portuguese and a Swiss, I'm glad to see my flags being in A. Though I have to agree the Portuguese flag is just one huge Soccer team flag and I can't unsee it now

I was going to say I want to see one with canada’s flag ranked, but doing a provinces + national flag is only going to need like 3 tiers (S, that’s a flag, dog shit) because it doesn’t have as many. Maybe you could come up with a different subset of flags to include Canada’s national one

why is kazachstan in there??? "azerbaijan is its neighbours" no it isn't. even if it did, so what? is china in europe because it borders russia? not to mention that azerbaijan being in europe is still a topic of discussion

Kazakhstan is partially in Europe (continent that is), although the majority of land is in Asia. Though putting it together with European countries is a stretch for sure 😂
