I had one too. Unfortunately not made in Sweden, but Made in Antwerp, Belgium. It was built in 1975, it was comfy and probably safe, but for the rest it was extremely unreliable. Doors did rust away after 5 years. Within 3 years the transmission had to be changed 3 times. ("You don't know how to use a clutch sir" Yeah, I drove more than one million km in a few other brands, but only the (Belgian?) Saab had this major problem.) The electronics were sensitive for and unprotected from damp, which caused the fan to stop cooling the radiator, maybe 10 times in 5 years. The cylinder head gaskets blew apart every year and had to be changed accordingly. It was a hell of a car, and you can take that literally. The Volvo I bought after, was such a relief, despite the Saab's better road holding and suspension.

I got my 05 Saab 9-3 Aero SS 5 years ago with 60,000kms. Now it's got 310,000kms and still running like clockwork! Haven't had any issues so far! I've had an ecu remap and a cold air intake done so she puts out around 260hp now and oh my god the mid range pickup is better than ever!

Good video and great points (Although Nevs is not Saab!). The main issue is Saabs completely losing their economic and cultural value after the bankruptcy resulting in neglected cars and people buying them as cheap dailys and skipping maintenance. All of us that has owned or owns well kept Saabs know that they are utterly reliable (for instance, by european statistics less faults than Volvos 2000-2010 model years). This is happening in Sweden as well, a good 9-5 cost as much as a crap worn out beater Renault or Peugeot. They have become cars for people with limited budget that does not care. I'ts a shame, but logic in relation to the bankruptcy. These are truly special and brilliant cars, for us swedes a true engineering pride that has got culturally forgotten in a very short time. For me as a swedish car fanatic brought up in Saabs, it is a great pleasure seeing a kid in the US desert or where ever taking pride and passion in these cars. Keep it up!
@AutoAutopsy7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's sad to see more and more getting neglected because of ignorance or stupidity. Glad you enjoyed!
@saabtech35107 жыл бұрын
Wow, I'm surprised this is happening in Sweden too. But the world has changed too. When I first started working on Saabs the owners conscientiously followed the maintenance schedule, doing all the scheduled minor and major services, getting their maintenance book stamped. 300k miles was nothing. Now people go so long without opening the hood that the hood release cable will have seized. At least me with my two Saabs, and others who appreciate the cars, will have cars that can last indefinitely.
I just bought my first SAAB: A 2008 9-5 Aero 5MT. I find your channel very helpful (without being too click-baity). Keep up the good work, man!

The traditional reputation of SAAB in the UK was that it was bought be discerning professional people as an alternative to the rival German brands. Their build quality and mechanical reliability was excellent. It must be remembered that SAABs were built for the harsher weather conditions of Sweden so they had to be robust. My only issue is that SAAB was taken over by GM and ended up using their engines (as fitted to the Vauxhall/Opel Vectra of the time). Good examples here today are still very classy and are quite rare. :-)

Not rare in my driveway. I have a 9-5 Aero wagon and a stg1 9-3 ragtop, total mileage between them 210,000 - 15,000 in my ownership. The only major issues with the 9-3 were broken front spring (British roads!!!!) and mysterious roof opening glitch that equally mysteriously went away as soon as I booked it in for a diagnosis. Not that bad for a 14 year-old car. Rear shocks on the wagon at 95K miles. Everything else is consumable stuff - oil, tyres, filters, plugs and coils (needed when the remap went on), NAV DVD updates, headlight bulbs....um...thats it so far.

Coherent, well-done video. My 2008 9-5 has 87,000 miles and is my daily driver. Since 2013 I have spent $2,700 on mostly preventative maintenence. I did have to replace an o2 sensor, DIC Cassette, flushed the radiator, new subframe bushings, rear shocks and front struts, a heater bypass valve, battery, and front brake pads (Akebono) and Hella rotors. Also changed my Mobil 1 0w40 and filter every 3,000 miles. Transmission fluid changed every 3rd oil change. The car has never failed to start and has never left me stranded. The seats are the most comfortable ever, the A/C always cold, a great moonroof, and it's just about the safest car out there. It also doesn't look like every other car on the road. I've never had any trouble getting parts. My Hella rotors were $57.50 each. My Akebono ceramic brake pads were $70 for both fronts. I was really considering a 2011 9-5 but was worried about parts, especially body parts and glass. But it's a magnificant vehicle. The GM influence is criticized, but honestly, having some GM parts bin parts is a blessing. I love the GM head unit and HVAC system and controls. I expect to have my 2008 9-5 for another 10 years. The Mitsubishi TD04 turbocharger is known to last 200,000 miles, as is the timing chain. Pretty impressive. As stated, just keep up with oil changes and belts and you'll be rewarded.

Sludge was only a problem on pre 2002 B205/235 cars that were poorly maintained due to a poorly designed PCV system and changed with non-synthetic oil. Easily fixed with a $100 upgrade. My '01 had the "faulty" system but always changed with synthetic and was sludge free 20 years on.

Ive just bought a 93 aero, with 84,000 miles on, with tons of history. Bought two weeks ago, and im loving it. Shane Essex , I've written to you before about my sister's 2008 1.9tid wagon.. good news it's finally had an oil change 🙄 and it goes so much better now! ..it used to randomly not start , it was because of insufficient body earth which was solved by adding an extra earth strap from the body to the negative on the battery which I made sure it had a bare metal contact . Which no car has a bare metal negative body earth, a good mate years ago informed me about a battery voltage regulator that fixed a faulty sensor issue, I've spent countless hours researching to see if I could find the truth in it which no information was available, how a voltage regulator fixes a sensor failure is with up to 7 extra body earth's, also the three factory body earth's need to be maintained, I'm glad this Saab solved my question that not even my mechanic mate who works for RAA road side assistance could answer , I'm a welder by trade , I did my apprenticeship at British Aero space and am very aware of the high standards required in this industry which is far greater than the average car manufacturer , SAAB would have definitely been industry bar standards innovators which the auto industry would have been striving to achieve also , long live the mighty SAAB .... The whole auto industry will miss you

1. My 1997 Saab 9000 Anniversary 2.3 CSE had stayed unused for 1.5 years up to a couple of months ago. It started right away at first key stroke. Impressive to me to say the least. 2. On my 1990 9000 CD 2.3T (210 bhp), I DIY'ed with AC overhaul incl AC pump repair, and complete front suspension and steering swaps, in 1 day. Later, a fuse box swap in half a day. Tho' these repair jobs happened when I was much younger and more energetic, it shows that at least the 9000 series Saab cars (and really, other Saab series too) are not impossible to maintain, at all.

My dad bought a 900S, new in 1985. It spent many years towing a poptop trailer... probably pushing it harder than it should have. I got the car in 1995ish, with about 167k miles on it. I drove it until the early 2000s when it had 220k miles on it. I brought it to a bad repair guy who screwed up the coolant system and the brake system. It also at that time needed another head gasket and the third (i think) clutch. Sold it and got a VW Cabrio... which was a fun car when it worked... and now a Honda Civic... I still miss the Saab. I loved that car. :(

Good info-- I would add that a good Saab forum-- I use SaabCentral--is a big help. Things that do go wrong with these cars is very well known and predictable, given that you've bought a Saab that was cared for to begin with. I got 275 miles from my 2003 9-5 Linear, passed it along, and it is still going strong. I now have a 2007 9-5 SportCombi. I buy parts when on sale because I am pretty sure I'll replace the water pump at 100,000 as I think I remember that's a good average life span for that part. The forums are a good place to hear what the average life span for the DCI (about 80,000 as I recall) might be so you can prepare.

Yeah, I've never had electrical problems thankfully, nor have any of our other Saabs. The 9-3 is obviously the go-to, where you could get the Aero from 2006+ with a turbo V6 (much better than the 9-5's old V6). Then of course there's the 9-5, which will be a bit bigger and have more power!

I've owned at least one Saab every year since 1983. On my 5th and final Saab now (an '04 9_5 Arc Wagon). My '83 900 was a great car, not without quirks, but was generally good to us. Kept it 13 years. I swore I'd never buy another one, then Saab offered 0% financing and we bought a new '92 9000S. Saab spent a fortune on warranty work on that car. It got so bad we met with the District Service Manager to see what he wanted to do about it. Ironically, it was pretty trouble-free after the warranty ended. Ate a lot of door lock actuators though. Kept that one 14 years. Tried to move away from Saabs and traded the '83 in on a '96 Altima. Kept that only 13 months as the driver's seat made my back and hips hurt. Shopped for a used Volvo 960 wagon at a Saab dealer. It was really nice, but was more money than I wanted to spend. They had two '96 9000CS service loaners. Took one for a test drive and almost instantly said "Yep, I'm home!" Traded in the Altima on it. The 9000CS had some issues, but the dealer beat the crap out of it when it was in for service. Dents, broken trim pieces, quite ridiculous. The Service Manager, not believing my claims of them damaging my car every time it was at their place ended up having it worked on in front of his desk so the techs wouldn't break anything. Sold it after 7 years; kind of wished that I had kept it. 4th one was a Certified Pre-Owned '02 9_3SE. I was smitten by its Sun Green color. Dealer reeled me in like a fish. Hated that it needed Premium, hated the small glove box, hated that I couldn't fold down the back seat without having to move the driver's seat up way too far. Beyond that, generally pretty good, typical issues, DI Cassette and Fuel Pump. I gave up when the head gasket was going south. 5th one was purchased in late 2012. Saw it ('04 9_5 Arc wagon in Hazelnut) online at a former Saab dealer in Boston. Got my wife's blessing, flew out to Boston and drove it back to Chicago. Dealer trade-in by an elderly couple who bought their "last new car", a 9_3 combi. It's been pretty good other than rust, terrible rust. Son is driving it, it was hit while he was at work and is held together by sheet metal screws. Doing vacuum hoses when it throws a CEL. Currently needs brakes, tires, probably sub-frame bushings and some other stuff. We're deciding whether it's time to say good-bye. Those are my Saab-stories. I miss Saab, but then again...

A big factor that contributed to the negative public perception of Saab in its final decade was the cost cutting measures that GM affected on Saab and just the general clash of cultures between the two companies. As an example, the 2003-04 9-3 models were affected by some sort of quick coupling failure that could allow coolant to bleed over into the transmission fluid cooling jacket of the radiator. GM issued a recall, but transmission failures were prevalent on those first two year models as the damage incurred depended upon when the owner received the notice and how many miles had accrued before the faulty part was replaced. GM was loathe to stand behind Saab on warranty issues like this because they felt that Saab was unnecessarily complicating designs by not using standard off the shelf GM systems.

When ppl nowadays say unreliable, they mean will it break easily when beaten on, or how tough mechanically is it when beaten on. Just about every car is reliable when babying it and maintaining the maintenance intervals. My question would b, how tough and reliable "mechanically" are the 2.0&2.8 models, stock.

I have 2 Saabs, a 9-3ss and a c900xs, reliability wise I have never spent any money on repairs, ever. Oh and the NEVs 9-3 is the Saab EV... Saab developed an electric version of the 9-3 way way back in the early 2000's on the 9-3ss chassis, it's not chinese, the tech, patents, tools everything is saab developed from before they were bought out and changed to Nevs. It's still Saab as far as I'm concerned. lets just hope they build the retro Saab 900 concept as an EV. it'll be a shash hit!

So I have been thinking about getting a Saab these days. I like diesel, but I read that only the 2.2 liter engine has the chain. Are the ones with belts worse than chain ones? In addition, A friend of mine has had loads of trouble with her 1.9 tdi ATM 2006 9-3. Coincidentally, the market is filled with 1.9 liter diesel engines. Are they really to be avoided?

I do have the 2000 Saab 9-5 with the "crappy" 3.0T V6... The engine that is in it isn't too bad, other than the A-symmetrical turbo system it is pretty reliable... If only they had both banks going to the turbo then I would believe it as more of a performance variant of the engines, so my plan to improve the "crappy" V6 in the 2000 9-5 model is to either find a way to put another turbo on the 2nd bank or connect the 2nd banks manifold to the turbo but boost isn't an issue with only running off the 1st bank, but id rather use both on one turbo. If you modify the car and make the engine, chassis, and suspension a bit better than factory I think you will have a fun, possible track car but that goes for any car.

Nice! Well, I'm glad you're enjoying your 3.0T!

I think when people nowadays say "reliable" they're thinking "how long can I go just putting gas in this thing and doing nothing else for it". If that's the case, being a Romanian, I can recommend many former communist-block vehicles that will keep running for decades, just don't expect many.. amenities from them :) As for SAAB, I bought my 9-3 6 years ago and the worst thing that's happened so far was (what I believe to be) the crank position sensor, that went out at 186000km (that would be 115000 miles). I change my own oil, filters, plugs, that sort of thing. Pads and a belt tensioner + belt I had changed at a local service, but other than that, it really has been pretty much just putting gas and washer fluid in it...

I live in Melbourne Australia and bought my first pre owned 2001 9-3 SAAB Convertible 3 years ago for $7000 AU. It was in a gorgeous Mint Green colour with the Factory rear spoiler . I found the car extremely powerful and you had to really hold on to the steering wheel under heavy acceleration as the power was so great it would rip that steering wheel right out of your hands. I would take great joy in taking on many young people in V8 cars off at the lights and leaving them for dust in my rear view mirror. Apparently the Turbo engine in my car was one of the best and most powerful SAAB ever made from Sweden.I joined and later became a committee member of the SAAB Car Club Of Australia so as to find out about these cars and to also sauce parts. I could drive down the freeway at 110 k's with the roof down and windows up in almost pure silence it was such a quiet car very well sound proofed and so solid. Ok that's the good stuff now for the bad. The car had 150.000 k's on it when I got it. After owning many Mercedes Benz vehicles over many years all purchased with around 100.000 k's on the clock I never had one problem with them. I would have purchased another but since 2000 the newer cars are garbage to much electrics to many things to go wrong as in most cars. I only changed to SAAB as a mid life crisis thing and getting towards retirement thought I would get something a bit different and wasn't long before I wished I had stuck with Benz's as I had to put a couple of grand in to my SAAB not long after purchase. Items such as replacing one of the ribs in the convertible roof $160 AU then replacing the radiator along with the fan $1000 AU from a wreckers yard , various dash vent toggles , re doing the cracked and faded leather seats , new struts all round $1000AU and the in dash combined auto air control module pixels disappearing (common problem) $600. After finally selling the car trading it and receiving a meager $3000.00 trade in on a pre owned Mitsubishi Lancer. I heard from the Dealer later that the new owner was faced with an oil leak from the Turbo and no warrenty , big money to repair but he receives the benefit of all my dollars put in to it for the future.
@AutoAutopsy7 жыл бұрын
Man, it's sad that you had to sell it :( sounds like you enjoyed it while you had it though!
@gary17057 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the prompt reply... but no I didn't have to to sell it but wanted to sell it before over capitalizing on it . The money I lost on it in the change over was bad enough. I still love the brand and now I am no longer naive to the possible problems as when I first purchased my car. Inherent problems with electrical issues with later GM cars such as windows going up and down on there own , central locking problems , bulbs constantly needing replacing Auto Trans problems , early Strut replacements , multiple dash warning lights all the time plastic paint rubbing off the dash buttons door handle and consul plastic paint easily scratching off..the list goes on other wise I would have gladly purchased another later model SAAB with a low mileage very cheaply her in OZ. I wanted something reliable and something I could drive not having to wonder what problem is going to surface today when out and about. Now I am retired I am on a fixed income and can no longer indulge in risk taking with my finances .

Body parts are expensive even in the used parts market.One fender is over $100.00 used.The factory scan tool,a Tech 2 is hard to find and does has to be used on one Saturn model,the Astra which is a Saab.It is by itself for Saabs only.The 4 cylinder engines are known for locking up even maintained.My dad bought one for resale and lost money on it.Had a bad engine and no one would not look at it after changing the engine.It was a convertible and found the convertible models had problems with the convertible tops.Lost money on it taking it back to the auction.
@AutoAutopsy7 жыл бұрын
Four cylinder engines in these cars have never been known for locking up. Also, when you're talking about body parts: you just have to find good deals; I replaced both of my bumpers and a fender and payed about $250 for all three combined. Painting was obviously a bit more expensive, but that's besides the point

Thats another great thing about Saab. All the Saab lovers around the world. How many other brands that have that kind of following? The people at Saab used to call it "Saab-ism". We have a nice Saab museum here in Trollhättan, all the Saab models including all weird concept cars are on display. I was there with my girlfriend the other year, when they had an anniversary. I was really cool to see all the different nationalities camping on the lawn outside the museum. Brits, germans, italians. Even saw a few Aussies haha :)

Sick prices on these cars. You can make such a good bargain! It's the same here in Sweden. I recently bought a black 2002 9-5 Aero SportCombi for 8000 swedish crowns (thats about 1000 dollars perhaps?) and that is a car that cost 360,000 when it was released! And for that 1000 bucks I got a car that has Leather seats, tinted windows, electric chairs with memory, heated rear seats, Xenon lights, AS3, new brakes, stainless steel 3" sport exhaust, new sport suspension, new battery, all brake lines replaced, new DI casette, replaced working SID, Latest PCV system, OpenSID installed, 250hp, new 17" summer and what looks like 17" winter tires. It suprised me that the car even got TCS and anti-spin and that's from a car that was made in 2002. And spare parts are PLENTY, especially here in Trollhättan since everyone who worked at Saab got to buy their own Saabs directly from the factory at a good price, so there's an ocean of used 9-3s, 900 and 9-5s here. practically been living in the garage the last three weeks doing a complete overhaul of the engine, replaced everything just for the sake of it. All the bearings, the timing chain, piston rings, everything refurbished. Feels very good now that I'm done. Now the engine has done 0 miles :) Can't wait for summer ;)

Also, when I turn the key to on (not start) and all the idiot lights come on, my CEL is not there. Meaning it does not light up with all the other lights like it should. Love Saabs but they did have serious reliability issues with the T7 B205s in the OG 9-3s (oil sludge). Granted if you use full synthetic oil, you'll be fine
@AutoAutopsy7 жыл бұрын
Full synthetic is always the best way to go in these cars
@thykingdomcome827 жыл бұрын
The sludge problem was mostly due to Saab jumping on the dealership scheduled maintenance bandwagon. Since the early services were "free", they lengthened the first service to 10K miles. Many owners pushed it to 14K miles before they came in for their first scheduled maintenance service. Plus, the oil Saab was using at the time was a semi-synthetic garbage oil that going 3k miles on it was pushing it. By the time cars were coming in for the first service the problem was well on its way. In my opinion the engine itself was not at all the problem, the oil was.

One of the things that needed to be replaced on my 9-5 is the Trionic 7 Black direct ignition pack, CPS, and Lenses. For some stupid reason, the previous owner must've fucked with the lights and accidentally broke the lens. Just don't break it if you don't know what you're doing.
