Great tips, but a lot of hands made with a chisel-edged pen do not require changing the orientation of your hand - the chisel edge does it for you. Just keep the tip on a 45-degree slant from the guideline and you will get thin upstrokes and thick downstrokes.

I agree with you Carol.

Yes, I’ve done traditional calligraphy for over 30 years, and I agree. Both modern and traditional calligraphy are beautiful, but very different in the approach.

Yeah, sure, I’ve become more aware of times when I’ve made 3 of the 4 common mistakes (thanks to Becca, I have the right tools). Oddly I also notice how practicing creates that muscle memory on the rare occasions when I begin writing my signature in cursive and find myself lifting my pen and subconsciously writing my cursive letters in calligraphy fashion. That cracks me up especially since in the beginning of learning the calligraphy basic strokes and repeatedly heard “muscle memory” used and hardly believed I would ever gain that super hero ability. ~ Rose

I’ve never really done modern calligraphy, but I learned the italics style of calligraphy. For that style, the chisel tip is appropriate, at least how I was taught. But I know it’s different with modern calligraphy, which I’m getting ready to work on learning.

What I struggle with is the size the of the letters. My normal handwriting is tiny so getting the muscle memory for larger strokes is more of a struggle. Practice makes perfect and I’m totally down with that. Thanks Becca you are the greatest

Perhaps you want to take this tip: get to know also another types of callygraphy with tools other than brushpens. For example chisel tip is used typically for blackletter, gothic and fraktur calligraphy. Pointed pens for traditional calligraphy. As well as monoline pens for monoline, faux calligraphy or serif scripts. There are several bunch of other tools you can observe too, but you have to focus on one type of calligraphy that suits you best.

Thanks Becca for the reminders of how to consistently write the strokes and letters. I am guilty of correct paper position & getting my left hand to have the correct hand position. Difficult because we lefties have to pull the pen towards us instead of pushing away from our body. Typically (how I normally write cursive) I turn my paper 90 degrees & hold my pen like a right-hander. I write my words from top to bottom. I practice everyday and have developed my own techniques to get the same thin/thick lines as you.🙂

New here :) Don't know if you've ever talked about this or could even have any tips or insight on the matter...But have you heard of any tips for Left-Handed peeps??? As a Lefty, we tend to approach things backwards and the whole, Angling-The-Brush correctly for the up and down strokes is a little tricky. If you've heard from other Lefties on how to do lettering, that would be awesome! Thanks :)

I watched this video to see if there are things I am doing wrong, but no, I followed all your tips. I literally just started 5 days ago, but I practice ours every night. My everyday handwriting is disgusting, thats why I started practicing, but i evolved way too fast, and I am suspiciously good. I even started to develop my own style. Is that something normal?? My fahter is coming ovwr with his old filler fountain pen, is that more difficult than with modern brush pens?
