Ah Phil, one of the really great pleasures I get out of watching you at work in your videos is the sense of 'unknown' with your woodturning. As you say, you do not run to the bandsaw & cut every piece round just to make the 'job a little easier'. You always want to give the piece of the chance to have a say in how you are to go about releasing the beauty that lies within. We are right there with you as you set out to discover what lies within. It's a mystery to be solved & this is how I feel it should be. It was the same with me when my hands & body would allow me to pursue my Sculpture pieces, mainly in wood, & was what I tried to teach my students to do while I was able to teach the art of sculpture working to them. Often when the school was open for inspection & parents came in & view what was being taught in our school , I would have parents come up to me & ask, 'do you take night classes so that I could come in & learn from you how to do sculptural work'? How disappointed they were to b told that the school did not run 'Adult Education Classes'. This piece so reminds me of that approach. It is a beautiful bowl with a beautiful finish made with pure love for the craft that you have released. Thank you my friend, stay safe & well in this tricky Covid time, Don.

First of all the bowl is very beautiful and the wood is also beautiful because you recognize how to bring its beauty out, I work with this wood a lot and from what I see This tree was very old, and one of the reasons it is not used for commercial production is the reason that gives it its beauty, its special form of growth. I really like this tree, in my country Israel it is the typical tree that grows here, thank you for sharing!

My husband sat down and watched most of this one with me. He agrees that this is some amazing grain. I love watching the process and hearing you talk your way through it. I think it's great that you don't decide before spinning and starting what you will end up with. A rough idea at most and then letting the wood talk to you as it does makes a beautiful result.

I live by/in the fires in Oregon, and as the flames consumed the trees, I just thought about the wonderful wood, the unique pieces going into ash, not your lathe. It all is tragic, all, all. It will be years before the hurt will lessen. Simply makes what is left appreciated so much more. You have some trophies that stand for the trees burned fellows. You could hold an exhibit along with your fellow turners as a memorial. Can you turn burned wood? I mean, can burned wood be turned because of course you could. Seeing the burned turned into beauty, now that would be a healing!
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop4 жыл бұрын
Again with the kind, thoughtful comment, Joanne. Thank you so much for that. 😊 I have turned three pieces that had been in a fire. One absolutely beautiful, one ordinary and one that wouldn't stay together because it was just too dry. But, I love your idea of memorializing some of the burned trees from all these fires. Oregon has some great hardwoods that, if having been in the fires would still likely be able to be turned. Not so much around here where we have mostly softwood Firs. I do know there are a LOT of turners in Oregon. Hopefully some of them will see this or come upon the idea on their own. I don't know if fire stations have lobbies but that would be a good place to display some of those turnings. ❤
