Yeah, Bird invented proto-modern basketball at some nothing college program in the 70s. He then dominated the 80s by being a big man who can spread the floor with his shooting and by being the 2nd best non-PG passer I've ever seen (right behind Lebron). He retires and the NBA goes back to the way it was, none the wiser because he was such a glitch in the system. Nowadays, a big guy who can shoot is a lot more common. But can any of them pass, or defend, or lead like Larry? Heck no. Bird would dominate any era in a way no other player I can think of would.

I have read some comments that bother me. Calling Larry Bird the Greatest white player is wrong. Bird was colorblind and disliked when a whiteboy guarded him. He talked trash to everyone regardless of who they were. If the could play basketball is all Larry cared about. I don't think he is the best player ever, but his 5 prime years would hold up against anyone. He really didn't have a weakness to his game except he treated an exhibition game like it was the finals. Diving for loose balls in practice. He could have played longer if hevdidn't play every moment with reckless abandon every game, but then he wouldn't had been Larry Joe Bird.

Larry Bird is the best SF of all-time. LeBron does have a chance to eclipse him, but in my opinion Bird is still the best SF. Shooting, rebound, passing (which is underrated, check out his highlight reel, he became a great passer because he envied Magic that much.) Part of the 50-40-90 club. He didn't have the speed, athleticism that some people are born with. But he had that heart and killer driver that you cannot teach. If the game was on the line and Bird had the ball in your hands, you were scared. You could put the fastest, toughest defenders and double team hi, but everyone knew when Larry had the ball in his hand come crunch time that he would somehow find a way to deliver. Wish people talked about him more in the GOAT topic.
@100ovrbatmanbron77 жыл бұрын
LeBron is better than Bird. better scorer(not shooter;scorer), passer, and defender. more athletic and superior longevity. Bird does have clutchness, rebounding, and shooting on LeBron, i'll give you that. but overall, LeBron is simply better. 1-on-1, he'd kill Bird. Bird is an offensive superstar, LeBron is an all-around superstar. but it is close.
@hbksharpshooter7 жыл бұрын
I kindly disagree. I know I am in the unpopular opinion here though. I just feel we are in the heat of the movement with LeBron these last few years (just like people saying Curry is 2nd best PG behind Magic and this Warrior team already better than any team before it.) I just do not see it. 1 on 1 I do not see Bird losing. When it comes down to 1 on 1, it usually comes down to who wants it more. Bird has shown on all occasions he wants it more than anybody. There have been times when LeBron has shown he did want it. I will absolutely give LeBron being a better defensive player. But not sure better scorer. LeBron can get to the basket better than Bird. Bird can shoot much better than LeBron. So it comes down to this: was Bird better at getting to the basket than LeBron is at shooting. And from everything I have watched and read I go Bird, but LeBron does have longevity on Bird so time can change that. Like I said, just my opinion.

I only got to see him one time live at the Boston Garden when i was sixteen in 1986. In 1981 when Boston won their first Championship ball with Bird I was laying in a bodycast..already missing the days of running out and shooting in the driveway at halftime. Coming from rural Maine, going to Boston was truly a trip of a lifetime.. It was just an '86 exhibition game when we got to go..they were playing the New York Knicks and Bernard King..but I was going to see my hero..the man.. Larry Bird. He was my biggest blue collar hero ever...a worker..a quiet killer. Thats one thing the family really could connect with. I dont have many memories of family trips that went well. My whole family agreed that Larry was the greatest.. Bird scored 45 that day and they went on to win the '86 NBA Championship..we watched every game together..as a family..no arguing..just chearing and once again running out at halftime to shoot baskets in the driveway...making deals with the basketball gods.."if i make 5 in a row before the 3rd starts they take this one..." Thanks Larry.

Being a native Southern Californian LA Lakers fan who was 17 when Magic & Bird entered the league, when it to the debate of who was the better player, I like most everyone else on the west coast chose Magic. I now know we were all wrong. If TV coverage in the 80's were equal to today's, we probably wouldn't have been fooled. Larry Bird, when you take into consideration how extremely rough the game was then, is the ABSOLUTE BEST PLAYER EVER, in my opinion. He did everything you could possibly ask of a player to do: pass, shoot, rebound, defense. You name it, he did it. Through injuries, commercial flights, sucker punches, etc. Bird was as clutch as they come (whilst also talking shit to his opponents). You'll never see another like him.

And players today sit out games because they want to be fresh while getting paid ridiculous amounts of money. Look at the elbows bird copped here the players today would NOT survive the 80's NBA. Plus back then with all the travel these guys did in COACH. Kevin McHale told the story of how they were delayed for about 6 hours and hopped off the plane and Larry Bird said "I'm gonna take it out on these guys" can you imagine the prima donnas of today riding in coach suffering delays and playing the same day? Players from the 80's were on a different level it's the golden era of NBA and in my mind it's the measuring stick for modern greatness.

elton francis. i cant imagine u watched basketball in those days. all u talked about is modern players. if u making a comparison u gotta talk about who u comparing to...... charles barkley, karl malone, dennis rodman, patrick ewing, bill lambeer, charles oakley, alonso mourning - players like these dont exist now. they played with a physicality and toughness that is absent in todays game. rules or no rules, the game is played waaay softer today.... also the era of small ball doesnt have bigger players then the era of the 7 foot center, lol, do the math

The very existence of a Larry Bird illustrates just what it is that makes a "great" basketball player. Among the skills required for high level basketball are (1) all the attributes that come from having a predominance of fast-twitch muscle fibers - lateral speed, quickness, jump height. These are inherited, but can be improved a bit with training (2) height. Inherited, not trainable (3) Coordination. This actually encompasses several distinct abilities, involving different loci in the various components of the neurologic system, the integration of peripheral sensory inputs (visual, vestibular, brain stem, basal ganglia), static strength, and intangibles like personality, character and will. If it were possible to quantitate each of these, we could see specifically which traits make each player what he is. Larry Bird lacked vertical ability but was reasonably quick laterally. He excelled in the various manifestations of "coordination", and his will and personality made him unaccepting of failure. On the other hand, NBA tryouts are over-run with tall young men with 40" vertical, who can't play the game because they lack one or more of the other qualities. If the game were called Jump Ball, and scoring was done by stuffing ping pong balls through 3" holes at various heights in the backboard, a one-trick pony with a 44" leap would be an All-Star. Larry made up for his deficient vertical by excelling in all the other categories. "Skill" correlates with how many balls he put through the hoop, not his performance in one of the tasks in the skill set. Minor point, but this is the second video I've seen which refers to a fracture of the "orbital." The "orbit" of the eye is the bony cavity in which the globe ("eyeball") sits. Roughly, it consists of a rim of bone called the "orbital rim", which you can feel around your own eye. The orbit itself is defined by thin walls of bone above, below, behind and to each side of the globe. The floor of the orbit is the weakest part. The globe is incredibly tough, so that an elbow to the eye with force and velocity won't explode the globe (generally), but will blow out the orbital floor, pushing the globe downward, encroaching on the maxillary sinus. A "blowout fracture." That traps the strap-like extraoccular muscles which control eye movement, causing double vision. That's serious but not an emergency so, in theory it would be possible to play a quarter of basketball with it. I wouldn't, but I'm not Larry. The "fractured orbiter" he kept referring to is undoubtedly a fractured orbital rim. That, by itself, isn't much, except that it never occurs by itself. It's the associated blowout fracture that causes trouble.

My fav LB play was the last video you showed: he missed the midrange shot but sprinted to catch his own rebound on the baseline and in one fluid motion grab the ball and flip up the perfect shot from a bad angle. So many other incredible plays rival that one in terms of memorability because Larry Legend was one of the greatest.
