The best thing about Larry, he could see the flow of the game and orchestrate it to perfection, whether it be a pass or making a shot. It ain't about how much Larry (or anyone else) shot or the average of a three point shot or a long range jumper; it's about when to take and make the shot, not just jack-up those three point shots until making it. The 3-pointer took all of the heart out of basketball. The 80's had the right balance of threes and an inside game. It is what it is, you can't go back unless you take away the three point line altogether, which will never happen. but if you did, none of today's teams could hold a candle to the great teams of the 80s and early 90s. Also remember that the 3-point shootout in the 80s didn’t have 2-pointer balls in every rack. So Bird’s total would actually be higher if he competed today. Bird’s score of 24 would probably be 28 today and it would beat 99% of 3-point competitors today.

Those games were unwatchable that's why they changed the rules. If I'm more skilled than you the only way for you to compete is to muck up the game.
@joek5078 Жыл бұрын
They changed the rules - in particular enforcing hand checking - to make it easier for perimeter players to score. They wanted to give teams with top perimeter players a better chance to compete against a team with top big men. The first 3-peat Bulls were the only dynasty without a top big man, and ratings hit record highs during the 90s. Rating dropped during the early 2000s as Shaq, Duncan, etc were dominating the league. They figured out it was more exciting to watch perimeter players dominate than big men, which allowed perimeter players to shoot 3s unobstructed. Perimeter players TS% immediately jumped in 2004-2005, then teams slowly figured out how to fully take advantage of the new rules.

In terms of why in the 80's is more physical is because players dont usually shoot from free throw out only on free throw in. So players on the free throw up they give them a lot of space to shoot. And when they go to the paint thats when the physicality starts. Everyone only drives to the basket and post up in the 80's. In todays game you cant do that because everybody is more talented right now in shooting the ball. Thats just my observation that is why the 80's players always says they are more physical because there isnt a lot of space to score from. Only a handful of players shoot free throw out in the 80's.

In Larry's era, hand checking and arm bars were allowed which made the game a lot harder. Players had to be stronger. Today, there is almost no defense. Everyone wants to shoot the three and receive an alley oop pass.

He shot the three so infrequently early in his career a good percentage of the ones he did shoot were half court heaves at the end of quarters and that will bring the percentage down. He was at least 40 percent when he started taking two or three per game before he had the heal surgery where they detached his two Achilles which would be similar to rupturing them and even with his bad back shot .389 and .406 his last two seasons and I think he was probably riding a bike for a lot of those seasons practices and not getting the reps he normally would have gotten. He didn't think you should get an extra point for that shot which is why he didn't shoot a lot early on except when he needed to.

If Curry, Bird, Jordan, and Kobe were in a 3 pts shooting contest, my money is on Bird to win. He was a storm cold killer, and hit more big pressure, clutch shots than anyone. Younger guy's may not know, but having season tix for the Lakers from 1979-1989 I can tell you that Michael Cooper was the shhht, and as a fan he and Kurt Rambus were my favs, and I'm sure Kareem and Magic would vouch that those two guy's with their talent and toughness were as important to the team as they were (sometimes more) when it was crunch time! My step dad had two seats 2nd level, dead center birds eye view of the game, and I think he paid around $1,200 a year for those seats. In 89' the Forum deemed those as "Senate" seats and moved us up and to the left, and that was that he didn't renew. Cooper could get unbelievably hot from the 3, and Rambus was one of the toughest white boys in the league, and a helluva rebounder!

My dad came to CA 3 mo's early, and when my mom sis and I flew out 01-11-78, walking in front of us at LAX from the plane to baggage claim was this giant slender man that turned out to be Bill Walton. He was about 40 yards in front of us so I never got his autograph, but it was him. The way the game is played today is all about shooting 3’s. Possession after possession, run up launch the ball bring it in take it down court launch the ball. It’s spectacular to see people make those amazing long distance shots for sure. Certainly a different era a different game. However, i(speaking for me here)get bored watching todays game by half time. Never ever did that occur watching games from past decades. The battles would go under the basket and back out to include 3 point shots if needed. I guess I’m spoiled from watching the greats from the Lakers Celtics Pistons 76’rs etc etc etc.
