I don't know who you are, this is my first video of yours I am seeing and I Literally NEVER write comments on videos but I have to.... It is incredibly refreshing to see someone openly documenting LEARNING life in the outdoors. Everyone else is out here acting like some Guru but to see you learning and just getting into the outdoors is amazing to me. Keep it up, just please tighten the drag on your fishing reel lol Honestly, your amazing and you are earning every ounce of viewership you get.

I appreciate you!! Thank you so much ☺️ The place I bought the rod and reel from set the drag for me but it felt like it was harder to pull the fish in than I thought it would be so I think you’re right

@@Apeaceofthewoods This person's post is DEAD-ON, and to it I would like to add that you may want to consider having someone with you, at least sometimes, who has more experience than you in the outdoors, in order to catalyze your development of the many, varying skills you will need to have more affectual and effectual experiences doing what you are doing. Still, back to the original post- it is DEAD ON! Good on you to be so intrepid with immersing yourself in the grassroots of ALL mankind! I WISH more people understood the VALUE and IMPORTANCE of what you are doing! If I see you around Metro Detroit, I'll say "Hi!" P.S. That panfish you caught was not a perch. At any sporting goods store where you can buy a fishing license, you should also be offered a FREE, printed fishing reference comprising various, necessary and useful information to keep you fishing and harvesting within the DNR's assigned legal and safe-to-eat limits, including distinguishing images of many of the fish species you are likely to encounter. I recommend that you spend some of your outdoor-leisure time taking in the information the DNR provides in that reference- to which you are bound in agreement by your signed fishing license- regardless of whether or not you agree with everything for which the DNR stands; a LOT of YOOPERS do NOT like DNR. Anyway, GOD Bless ✝️🙏🏾💜☝🏾

Nice vid. I grew up in the U.P., traveled the world, had some life changing events which ended up to be an unexpected blessing. Now I have a really nice off grid log cabin, and future permanent residence, on a lake southwest of Houghton that I enjoy so much. I just had 15 days off and I spent it splitting wood, fixing and improving things but I also spent a lot of time in flipflops sitting on my pontoon chilling. I enjoyed the spirit of your vid because at heart I am a Landlooker and spend time in the wood here trying to see whats over the next hill, usually with a flyrod as an excuse. Last year we found one of those things. Fishing on a pretty remote part of the Firesteel River my two fishing partners and I planned to meet up after 3 hours. It was 85 degrees. We met up at this random spot sitting on this river rock slope covered in moss. Springs made that spot 20 degrees cooler. As we sat in that air conditioned spot my son pointed out the huge Cedar trees, they were as big around as the biggest White Pines I had ever seen. It was an incredible moment. Enjoy.

Living in Michigan, I love that someone is showcasing camping and canoeing from here. Don't doubt yourself as you're getting out there and trying new things, those portages may be easy to experienced canoers but doing eight in a day is a ton for someone new. It will be easy to you one day. Also, as someone mentioned make sure you set the drag on your pole, when casting it should be loose enough to pull out line with some resistance and then when you hook larger fish you can increase it so you are able to reel them in.
@Apeaceofthewoods
@Apeaceofthewoods Ай бұрын
Thank you! I can’t wait to be able to get to more places. Michigan is such a beautiful State☺️☺️ I appreciate that. I think the toughest part is how painful it is to have the canoe sitting on your shoulders. I’m sure it would be easier with a lighter canoe. That makes sense…I was thinking that if it was any bigger it would have been really hard to reel in. Even when my hook got caught on something under the water, the reel just kept spinning, so I thought something might not be right

Subscribed as a show of support and, I guess, solidarity. That said, if she reads this, please be careful out there. Not going to say going this alone is potentially dangerous. Congress gave the U.P. to MI to compensate it for the “Toledo Strip,” a piece of land Congress gave to Ohio in a land squabble between the two states. The U.P. Was originally part of WI, but was detached along the Brule River. The “Yoopers” are great people, respectful of nature, and they welcome visitors as friends. Bears might be a problem, but 99% of the time they will avoid humans. Researchers estimate black bears to number over 10,000 in the U.P. Add to that more than 24,000 bears in WI and your chances of seeing one increase. It would be advantageous for people hiking and camping in the U.P. And northern WI to learn more about bears, their habits, and what to do in the event of meeting one. The big lesson, “Never get between Momma Bear and her cubs!”

Nice portage trip! There are so many great places you can get to by paddling that it makes the portage worth it. Nice job on catching and cooking too. A perfect fillet is nice but I like stir fry nuggets just as well😁. So cool to see you learning fishing, there's always new stuff to learn even after decades. A bit tighter drag helps and when they are pulling drag is when you stop reeeling otherwise the line gets twisted. Reel in again when you can gain line. Its a give and take especially with big fish. I love this video. I have been putting my wife through the outdoor training camp lol. She is catching on great. I think you are catching on great also, the only three pieces of advice I will give is. 1. learn when to tighten and loosen your drag. (Different situations call for different tightness's, it took me a while to learn it also because I learn kind of slow.) 2. Cottonballs with a Nickle(ish) sized glob of Vaseline rubbed all over them are great fire starters. Stick them in a ziploc and when ready stretch the cotton ball out so you can see the small fibers in the middle and hit it with a flint and steel. It will light right up. I always carry about ten of them in my pack. (As with anything in camping practice a little at home before going out trying it.) 3. Don't listen too much to everybody's advice. Take all advise with a grain of salt and find what works for you. I've been camping about my whole life and seen a lot of people do things a lot of different ways. Being as I am in my early thirties I always take it as an opportunity to learn new things from those more experienced than me, I adapt what works and throw away what doesn't because there is no absolute right way to do anything and depending on where you are you may have to find creative ways to get different jobs done. Learning what works for you is part of the adventure of the outdoors so make sure to enjoy the process. Oh yeah almost forgot. 4. Bear spray. Never go anywhere without it. (Unless you don't have bears where you are at. (It seems like you can't go anywhere near my part of Appalachia without seeing them) Glad you are becoming a part of the real world. Respect and take care of our mother, Mother Nature, and most of all. Welcome to the club!!! :)

Aww thank you! Im happy to hear you think I’m doing well since I’m putting myself through the outdoor training camp 😂 but also glad your wife is catching on. 1. It cracks me up that you and others are able to immediately see that my drag wasn’t tight enough. Is it supposed to be adjusted while fishing when reeling in a fish? If it’s a situational thing than I think knowing when and how much to tighten it will have to come with experience 3. Love the cotton ball idea 😊 4. I agree lol. Although the fact that people are so willing to offer tips and advice like this is an unexpected bonus of posting these videos. I’ll have to learn from my own experiences for sure but there’s a ton of wisdom in these comments that I normally wouldn’t have access to. So I appreciate you for the information! So happy to be in the club 😊

Great trip Woodsy, that was quite the adventure. Those portages were no joke! Those were some of the steepest transfer portages I have seen in a while for such a short distance between lakes. Your tarp set up didn't look too bad for your first time pitching a tarp just glad you were able to get your food cooked before it rained too. Rainy days while camping can be just as relaxing and enjoyable with the ASMR effect that rain has when hitting the tarp and the leaves as it comes down. Very soothing to the soul. You have really hit your stride with your videos and they are very enjoyable to watch as you work on mastering your outdoor skills. Looking forward to the next one!

Next time I’ll probably take the advice of some of the comments and try putting it over my tent. I realized that in this trip…I really enjoy a rainy day at camp.
