The developer options thing asks for the pin/pattern/password to enable on newer Android versions, so if your friend never used it it only works if they don't have a lock on the phone.

Tried the android 1s on mine. It actually does work that way. There's a few other options you can turn on as well like show pointer location (id like to see someone make art out of that), and show grid layout. Its impossible to ignore.
