This is my first day with my plant and I'm glad I found your channel. I watered it because it traveled from Jamaica to southern US. I left the excess water in the tray until I saw your video... don't want to start bad habits and even though the soil looked dark I didn't put my finger in to check the moisture. It was packed with a small roll of cotton and then wrapped in cling film. I don't know why I thought I should feed it other than me having dinner at the time and I thought maybe it was in need. Silly. Well, back to your instructions now... I'll get it right now. Thank you!
@simpleplanty
@simpleplanty Жыл бұрын
How exciting Cassandra! You've already taken the first step and doing just a bit of research on how to best take care of your plant, so you're well on your way for success! Definitely tip out that excess water when you can, because the water eventually absorbs back into the soil (leads to overwatering) and then potentially a decline/root rot. Not to worry too much, once you know the basic concepts, it's really easy and all you really have to do is keep them happy by watering them (granted it has some adequate light and every now and then, a feed of liquid fertiliser during spring/summer!). Also, once you can gauge at how much water it takes to well to the bottom, you don't have to pour so much next time :P hope that helps!

Hi Rachel! Thanks for watching, so glad it helped! As a rough guide for repotting, you could use a pot that is roughly the same circumference as your largest leaf - repotting during spring/summer is the best when the plant is its strongest. Just came across your vids and have to say it is very informative and well put 2gether. My question is what do you do if your monstera has gotten so so big? What's the best way to split it? Mine has 3 large separate sections?
@simpleplanty
@simpleplanty 2 жыл бұрын
No worries and thankyou so much for the feedback! I've got the exact same problem as it had 2 seperate sections and started growing really rapidly. I guess depending on what you want to do with it, I started cutting up some of the stems and gifting them as propogations (I literally gave away 3 beautiful healthy leaves to a friend last week which made her very happy). Otherwise, if you want to make smaller plants, you could divide it from the base and replant it (however, this will only be temporary as it'll start growing again 🤣). Feel free to prune them, as you wish!

Hi Lara! Thanks for your feedback, I really appreciate it! An interesting tip a friend once told me (I've not tried this personally myself) after overwatering was if it was safe to take the plant out of the pot, then to use absorbent paper towels to soak up the excess water. I can imagine this method being quite troublesome though 😂 depending on how much it has been overwatered, either two actions - if you know it's definitely going downhill, I'd quickly try to find a way to rid of the excess, otherwise I'd wait. You could repot to leca at a later stage if you wish. Hope that helps 😊🌱

Hello. I loved your video, so informative. I bought mine back in August and it seems to be thriving quite well by a window in my living room that gets light coming in. I tend to rotate the plant once a week so all sides get some sun. There is a air vent on my floor not too far from the plant. I live in the midwest and right now it is starting to cool down. It has been sitting in the same location since I got her and it has had central air ( cold air ) come through the vent and now with it cooling down there will be heat coming through the vent soon. Will that phase it? Also, I am concerned that I do not know how to properly water this plant or any other ones. If the pot has holes in it for drainage am I supposed to give it a good drink when the soil is completely dry and then once watering keep watering until I see the tray on the bottom fill with water? That is my biggest fear is over watering or under watering. I do not have alot of option of where to place my plant so it is by the window on the floor that I mentioned. Thank you.
@simpleplanty
@simpleplanty Жыл бұрын
Hello! No worries, I'm glad to help! Sounds like you're doing all the right things - rotating it once a week, etc! How far is the vent from the plant and does it get direct draught? Monstera's are generally not too fussy but when you do have extended periods of cold/hot direct air blowing onto the leaves, there will be some impact. If it's just closeby and not in direct contact, I wouldn't be too concerned! That's absolutely right regarding the watering - you would keep watering until you see water drain through the holes at the bottom and making sure you're tipping all your excess out. One more tip here; I find that the plants that I purchase here don't come with the best soil - often too compact and when you water them, they can get prone to overwatering easily, because the soil doesn't have enough drainage. I usually repot my plants into new potting mix and add a few extra ingredients such as perlite/charcoal, etc. which increase the spaces in the soil, so I've never worried about overwatering due to the drainage. But no worries, repotting isn't an absolute must if you just acquired your plant 😊 I really hope that helped you! 🌱🌱🌱

Hi! I just discovered your channel today, you’re so entertaining and knowledgeable too! I have a question.. I bought my monstera about a year ago in a 16 inch pot - but there are actually 2 plants in there! Each plant has about 8 leaves. Question is should I keep them together when I repot and stake it or do I separate them. I’m so scared to disturb it/then lol 😅

Thanks Suzy! Really appreciate the feedback and thanks for watching! My monstera deliciosa is actually the same - it was 2 plants inside the pot when I first got it, but I prefer a more 'fuller' looking plant personally, so I kept the two inside. It really depends on you - you could split it up if you really wanted to, to make two plants, but I'm the type of person who buys the same plant species and combines them into the same pot 🤣 Your preference here!

Hi James! Love your channel and sooo thankful! I have asked you a question before and got an answer so I figured I would again. I have a couple very large monsteras and they are getting very leggy. 1. how do you prune your monstera to get multiple close together nodes on each stem to promote a fuller plant? Is this done by cutting above the node or below? 2. If your monstera is not drinking water because it needs a repot, is pushing out smaller leaves, and is getting slightly yellow around the edges of the new growth, does this mean root rot? HELP on all questions!
@simpleplanty
@simpleplanty Жыл бұрын
Hi Megan! I actually wrote you a really lengthy and detailed reply but KZbin accidentally closed my box (darn it!). Anyway, I'll be concise this time, but basically if you have enough space at your place to move it towards a place that has more light, that would really help and assist with 'leggy growth'. I generally propagate and then replant them in the same base to achieve a more 'fuller' looking plant!
@simpleplanty
@simpleplanty Жыл бұрын
As for the second question - how often are you watering it? Are you allowing the soil to mostly dry out before you water it next? Monitor how often you're watering it (as root rot is generally from overwatering - and even in some cases, underwatering). If it's still pushing out leaves, that's a good sign, so you still have chance to salvage, not to worry!

@simpleplanty
@simpleplanty 8 ай бұрын
No worries, super glad I could help! Is there a reason why you want to seperate them, ie make two different plants? It depends on whether it has two different root systems embedded in the soil - if it’s two shoots from one main branch, then I would not recommend it (as it is just growing from one root system), but if you inspect it carefully and can see that it’s got it’s own root system, then should be safe to do so! Hope that makes sense ☺️

@simpleplanty
@simpleplanty 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ariana! Glad it helped - regarding the unraveling, my assumption is that it's not got enough energy to unfurl itself, is it placed in a spot with ample light? Otherwise, you can try to unfurl that leaf physically if it's relatively grown already (carefully, though). If you're referring to the splits in the leaves, they'll develop over time. Hope that helps!

But it tends to grow out not up. I recently bought ,but haven’t hung, a grow light. How do you feel about over head grow lights for my baby? Not really a baby plant! I was hoping that light from above would encourage it to stretch upward. One last thing, can you ever give to much light, as in length of time?? Lights out at bedtime! 10:56 Thank you for your input!❤️

Aloha right back at you! In general, plant growth directions tend to be impacted by where the source is located (and very noticeable in monsteras!). However, if you're really wanting to encourage it to grow upwards, I would highly recommend staking it in addition. You could stake it using a pole / trellis (depending on preference). I did make another video on my channel on whether you should use a stake, pole or trellis in case you wanted to check that out 😊 Hope that helps!

Hi Lisa! Thanks for sharing - I love the name Esmeralda (coincidentally it's the name of one of the characters I play on a game 🤣 - very exotic!) Hi Nhat! Nice to meet you! I periodically use some 'eco-neem' (neem oil) diluted with water and wipe down my leaves periodically (sometimes with eco oil). The tip is to go proactive / preventative as opposed to reactive (where you are fighting them off and generally need stronger products). I do think neem oil is rather weak but great as a proactive as opposed to a reactive fight. If my plants ever get subject to bigger infestations, I'll go for some vitality plus and white oil to keep them at bay. Remember to read the instructions real carefully! Hi. This is the first time I've watched your videos but really enoyed it. It's full of tips and easy to understand. So I live in Saudi Arabia. And we bought a beautiful monstera some months ago. We have watered it once the top inches were dry. We put in shower to water and drained off the excess. We kept in a cool room that runs on AC at 20-25°C room temp (extreme hot summers here) then we shifted it to another room without AC around 30°-35°c. The plant didnt do well, leaves fell, and we discovered after it's death that it was a root rot. We very much want to have one again but super afraid and anxious now. Need some honest advice if the plant can thrive in our country and climate? We are going towards autumn and winters now.
@simpleplanty
@simpleplanty 8 ай бұрын
Nice to meet you and thanks for watching my videos! I definitely think your plant is capable (and if anything, will thrive in an environment such as the one you have described!) From your story, root rot is generally attributed to excess watering - I do know that you had mentioned you drained off the excess in the shower, however, if your soil/substrate is quite dense and compact, if you are pumping too much water into the soil, it tends to just absorb and over time ends up suffocating the roots. I generally repot my plants and add substances such as perlite/charcoal/vermiculite to form spaces around the substrate, to allow the roots to breathe. You will notice that your substrate will dry out a lot faster in your climate, but it just means you will need to get that watering can a little more frequently. Hope that helps ☺️
@simpleplanty
@simpleplanty 8 ай бұрын
Also- another tip is that I would avoid moving your plant around too often. Once you find a suitable spot, keep it there!

I have done all of your four tips, I think I need to repot. There are only 8 leaves but they are very large (about a foot and half in length). Thank you for your response.
@simpleplanty
@simpleplanty Жыл бұрын
Hi Donabel! Definitely a soil change will give it a nice refresh - then the rest is quite simple; letting it acclimate to your place and watering it when the soil is dry will help! MD's do prefer a bit of a chunkier soil mix, so do consider adding in other things such as perlite, orchid bark, etc. according to your preference in the mix!

Absolutely! I generally prune them and give the stalks to friends (so it's a win-win situation!). They will normally grow back from the growth point, but if you are pruning to give it away to friends for propogations, you'll just need to ensure that you chop them correctly beneath the 'node' to ensure that the roots can grow out from there and establish a new plant. Hi Terry - generally speaking, you would think they do better outdoors since they originated outside (but also depends on what your normal weather / climate is on where you're residing). Comments and feedback like this really make my day - I can't wait to get back into the groove of uploading some useful content, I've got some exciting stuff planned which I need to find the time to start filming! Thankyou again 😊

@@simpleplanty Thank you so much for your kind words! What happened is that I had ordered 1 Monstera deliciosa from an online seller, and she ships 3 babies with each purchase. She has great seller ratings but the shipping was confusing because it takes almost a month for them to ship. So I was annoyed since its getting to be fall, and cooler weather. I ordered 3 baby monstera deliciosa's from another seller who has youtube vids and a great reputation. So the first seller contacted me, and we got the shipping straightened out, and she said for my trouble she would send some extras (LOL). So I ended up with 8 monstera deliciosa's from both sellers shipped perfectly, and beautifully. The reason I order plants online is that I'm kind of a introvert, especially since Covid, and I don't drive, and have my bicycle. I've never been in a car accident in my life, so a few years ago after I paid off my car, I donated it to make a wish foundation. I figured eventually my number would be up and I would be in an accident. I'm kind of supersticious that way. Also, to be honest if I went to a plant store in person, I would overspend and bring way too many plants home. I'm suppose to be getting my 2nd baby Thai next week, and I won't get any more plants until spring. If you do some more filming, I will very much enjoy watching. I would love to see how big your plants are now in your place too! You are fun, and when you're doing your videos and make a mistake, you make funny jokes about it lol. Take care thank you for listening to my sillyness.

@@StormyAfterDark omg you're really going to have a forest in your place! Knowing a little bit about your lighting situation, I guess it is probably ideal you get some grow lights going - otherwise you're going to have very leggy plants 😂 My Deliciosa is a little leggy because she's the further most away from my balcony door where the sun hits. I don't mind too much because I don't have enough space to move her (unless I decide to leave her outside!). No issue with purchasing plants online; I've seen plant packages arrive where the seller has put a lot of care and effort into it, so you may possibly even get plants that are even better condition than in the nursery! Perhaps you can propogate them later or gift them to friends 😚 That is so kind and noble of you to donate to make a wish foundation (my heart melted!). I can't wait for your Thai to grow (even more so because each time a new leaf emerges, I swear it is the most exciting thing that I wake up to for a week as the lead unfurls!). Thankyou so much for your support on the videos - I really want to make sure I film and make some useful and entertaining videos; quality over quantity hehe 😊
