Please don't laugh at my comment - but this was magical. I don't paint many pet portraits in watercolor - mostly acrylic - and some of these techniques are not new to me - but I really loved the "pencil" technique. Thank you for sharing. I am definitely going to try this on my next animal painting I do.

I need me a grainer brush! It looks so cool and useful! Great painting as always! I am going to try to make a bunny and a horse portrait for Christmas gifts and I am pretty nervous (but excited!) I have never done *realistic* animals before, but I have been watching you and Ashley Hawkes for a while, so I should have it down 🤣Wish me luck! Also, what brand of paint do you use please?
@aquilawatercolor3 күн бұрын
@@artandmusic09 oh that sounds so fun- if you have reference photos you are really excited to paint then you are already half way there. I use American Journey from Cheap Joe’s but I also love M Graham. My supply list talks about lot more about how to choose great paint. Let me know how your portraits go. 🥰🎨

Two more question do you paint for other people? I have two Dobermans I’d love to have a painting of. You do absolutely beautiful work. I asked about the paper earlier, I watercolor, or should I say I give it a heck of a try, papers confuses me 100 % cotton just isn’t my favorite paper, I use professional grade paints and I like my brushes I have real squirrel hair and several artificial bristles? What your thoughts on the paper if you don’t mind?
@aquilawatercolor2 күн бұрын
Yes I do! You can learn more about commissions at aquilawatercolor.com Thank you so much for your kind words! Yes paper is so important, and it is good to practice on a few different ones until you find what you like. Everyone has their own favorites. I share my recommendations in my supply list at paint333.com and go over all the aspects of paper in there too. Cheap Joe's sells paper sample packs if you want to start there, otherwise I would highly recommend Fabriano Studio Cold Press if you aren't having the best experience with 100% cotton. Once you find a paper you love it could really change your whole practice!

Are you making actual marks with the pencil as well as moving the paint?
@aquilawatercolor2 күн бұрын
Yes and no - it can be hard to make a pencil mark on wet paper, but when you push the paint water into the dry areas and also push down on the pencil, then you can achieve pencil marks. I like pencil lines in my watercolors so I just let it happen.

Would Moonglow work as a neutral?
@aquilawatercolorКүн бұрын
@@melindaavila498 ooo moonglow is gorgeous! You should test that and see if you like it. I have limited experience with it but from what I remember it might not get super dark or mix as well with other colors. I believe it has awesome granulation though.
@eddabrandes7395Күн бұрын
I love Moonglow and use it often as a neutral. Burnt Siena and Ultramarine in tiny amounts if I need it slightly warmer or cooler/darker.

Could I ask why the paper is only 25% cotton?
@aquilawatercolor2 күн бұрын
Typically, studio grade paper is cheaper because it is mostly cellulose instead of 100% cotton. Cellulose makes the paint behave a bit differently, mostly because it is not as absorbent as cotton. I'm demoing on this paper because it is a cheaper option for beginners to practice on. Its lack of absorbency gives you more time to work with the paint before it dries. I still paint on it for my 11x14 commissions because I just love it so much.
@Merzui-kg8ds3 күн бұрын
I am not sure I heard what paper you use. The techniques you are showing rely heavily on the quality of the paper to work.
@aquilawatercolor3 күн бұрын
@@Merzui-kg8ds agreed! Paper is the most important supply. I used Fabriano Studio (not 100% cotton) cold press. I talk more about why I love it in my supply list! Paint333.com
