Thanks Steve. I understand what you have explained very clearly, thank you. However, the four figure number appears to represent a point of intersection on the map, not an area as such. Is this because, by convention, this refers to the area indicated between the grid lines provided?

John Bates yes that is right. The area is identified by the coordinates of the bottom left corner.

This is a common misunderstanding. The vertical lines give people a sense of running "north to south" and so people incorrectly call them northings. You have to think of it as moving from one line to the next. As you move from the left hand side to the right, from one vertical line to the other, you are moving east. In the same way, as you move from one horizontal line to the other, you are moving north, so these lines are called northings.
