There are plenty of other habits that I acquired from good Ol Germany that have made my life SO MUCH easier! I’ve honestly been so grateful to have been able to share all of my recent experiences with you all! I’m actually working on a video as we speak of me actively practicing my German skills (it’s gonna be Diabolical 😂) so be on the look out! What are some things you’d want to see me practice in German in a video? And also what other habits do you think could be useful from Germany?

I'm going to Hamburg on the 29th for a month . It's my first time going to Europe. I'm so thankful to finally be able to visit Germany. I'll be in a meditation retreat in a little town called Schneverdingen. I'm trying to get myself ready for the cold. I'm from Southern California, so I am not used to winter temps...lol. Thank you for your videos. I've learned a lot .

People often times confuse directness with being impolite or straight up destructive. Being direct, giving your opinion, and doing so in a respectful and constructive way helps out everyone. No one wants to offend anyone and no want wants to offended. That's just how things go. But as you said - if you hide behind fake politeness, thing will stay the same. Which can be to someone's detriment if said things are not good or at least not as good as they could be.

James, I really like you and your channel, your conclusions whether beeing good or "critically". It's like looking into a mirror that tells you a story from a different perspective and that's good. It's like, reading the newspapers from abroad and not just the local ones - which I highly recommend to all Germans. Thank you James, for you input.

When it comes to research, the most important thing (imho) is not to question something out of spite but in order to honestly wanting to understand why things are the way they are. Unfortunately, way too many people nowadays believe that critical thinking is just calling everything fake news and creating their own little bubble in their minds, while the actual meaning is simply to ask "Why? Why does it work that way?" Also: carbonated water ftw! ^^

The key to ensuring that people don't feel offended when you criticise or are being honest is to say something positive at the end.

Hey James I follow your content since multiple years now. And I come back from time to time to see how you are doing. I'm from Switzerland and the mentality is the same as in Germany when it comes to spending money. We will safe our money to later invest it in buying a house to get a passive income when we rent it for others and invest the money also in stocks for example. Or something else with high value (something that will have some long purpose). I would like to see how your German improved. Wish you a nice Christmas, James!

Some spring waters are naturally sparkling, too. Merry Christmas! 😊 Come to the Karneval, and try small towns where not all people speak English. Or insist that they speak German. A Canadian guy I know has been in Germany for more than 20 years, and that's what he does. He has a little English accent, so people who speak English tend to speak English with him, and he just refuses to answer in English back, he always answers in German. Eventually all people speak German with him.

Hi James! Us older Germans sometimes call Sprudel "Rülpswasser" - because: What's more refreshing in the hot summer weather, than a huge sip of water and an equally huge burp after?🤣

OMG, I can`t believe, how deeply this recent trip "germanized" you. But I like it! Sure, giving somebody your blunt opinion may not even please them, and you probably may be wrong according to the common taste, but if you don`t like something, I think it`s fair to say it. Yes, it might not be the ideal way in a worldwide perspective, but it clarifies your position, and that frees a friendship. I look forward to you having many more trips to Germany, and maybe we will meet each other in my countryside area, having enough time that you can relax and enjoy our kind of hospitality in the southwest of Germany (did I hear "Weinfest"). Have a great Christmas time and always stay safe.

Very interesting video! I have just a tiny remark about being blunt, so it does not sound rude (bluntness 2.0 😁): try talking in the I-form. With your example about the mix-tape it would make a diffence for the creator (!) of the tape if you would say " I do not like the music" instead of "the music doesn't sound good". But, that is just my humble opinion 😇 I like it very much how you reflect on so many things, and your German sounds really good! Merry Christmas, James, and see you in the next video 🥰

What I learned: If someone in America asks me, my counter question would be "can you take German directness?". Depending on their answer I'll go the 1. "It is Ohkhay" route, the 2. "lets try something different" "A little less salt" "a bit too sweet" (which already some feel offensive), or 3. the actual German directness. If they feel offended I explain: "We Germans see beating around the bush or an overly long non-offensive answer as an insult, 'cause we see it as waste of time." Oh, BTW: I see how much you personally improved over your previous videos way over a year ago - impressive! Which is typical American too: Being able to adapt.

team leitungswasser 💪🏻 why would you want to drink angry water that hurts your throat?
@dirkspatz3692
@dirkspatz3692 2 сағат бұрын
Because "Angry" Water mixed with a little bit of Lemon, Apple Juice or Orange Juice taste better than tap water schorle. Sprudelwasser also let you feel your stomage "full" faster than tab water. So in a hot summer you drink Carbonated water slower (over a longer time but only a little bit every minute) - by this way your body can use the water better to be hydrated while drinking a quarter Gallon in 5 minutes is to much for the Body to use directly aka it goes from the Stomage direct to the kidneys, additionally your Body wants to get rid of the water by oversweeting ,and you permanently wants to pee.

It wouldn't german if we couldn't go more inti detail about "Sprudel Wasser". In Baden Württemberg you have TWO types! The "Saure Sprudel" (Saure sprinkling water) which is whta you know as "Sprudelwasser" and "Süßer Sprudel" (Sweet sprinkling water) Which basically is a soda or soft drink that you know under brands like Sprite oder 7up. Of course the german or euopean versions taste different, just like german coke and german fanta does taste different to the american versions.

I don't believe the US indirectness originates in society at all but in consumerism. There's a clear incentive for _companies_ to talk people into believing that even constructive critique is rude: It would slowly raise the consumer's quality standards, meaning that distributors wouldn't be able to sell very low quality products for a large profit margin anymore. Compare products manufactured or distributed in the US vs. Germany. There's a reason for the saying "Americans will buy anything", so the lowest quality from mass manufacturing countries like China will primarily be distributed in the US. You'd have to make a conscious effort to find a comparably low quality sold anywhere in stores here - those products are exclusively sold at wholesale "Dollar Store" equivalents where nobody expects quality, whereas in the US those products are sold at _regular_ stores because people are used to extremely low quality anyway.

Fact checking became insanely important as the very most outlet push onsane claims in their headlines and put the real information at the very end of their articles. Even articles in scientfic journals have to be taken with care and require cross confirmation to get a grip of the truth. It's exhausting. 😡

4:46 To your point saying a lot of Germans research their statements before saying them - I'm not sure how the statistics are in Germany as a whole, in my environment I unfortunately encountered it many times throughout the last few years that there are a few topics where people don't really seem to spend time properly researching on. *Especially* when it comes to the topic of queer people/LGBTQIA+ - the place I'm currently working in, there is a guy, just a little younger than me (I'm 21, almost 22) who is a bit weird when it comes to actual facts about queer people. On one hand he is totally fine with same-sex relationships, trans people etc., but then he says the weirdest things out of nowhere that are not true at all. Some of these things don't even require a longer/more precise research, I was able to find the answers in literally less than 2 minutes lol. Unfortunately this is something that I see happening over and over - people just randomly claim things about Queer people without taking any effort to do a proper research. It's not just on the internet, it happens IRL too. I just wish people would shut their mouths in topics they know basically nothing about, but maybe that's a me problem, I don't know... Anyways, sorry for the rant, I just remembered this because of the thing you mentioned haha^^
