@@bitnatures >mfw >talking about caddy and ignoring it's inferior performance to nginx >talking about quark and ignoring the lack of reverse proxy features available in nginx nginx is king, for now, when you want to host 4 web pages/apps on one server with each site existing in it's own VM to sandbox server side processes, and open up other ports so applications can use APIs because Google bad so you replace it. Caddy might be technically capable of doing all that, but compared to nginx it serves responses at a much lower volume which is a problem when we are talking about applications chattering away especially if I decide to be cool and let friends de-google themselves with my services. Quark is fine if you literally just want to publish information, I want to interact with mine. It isn't bloat if you are using it.

Another thing to keep in mind when self hosting is that you'll need a static IP address (or a dynamic DNS), which many ISPs only offer for companies (at least here in Poland, maybe in the US it's different). And some ISPs even block port 80 or outright prohibit hosting websites on residential addresses in their ToS.
@WreeperXD
@WreeperXD Жыл бұрын
in Romania in most cases everyone only have port 25 and other e-mail ports blocked Germany's Vodafone doesn't seem to be strict on open ports, basically you are only restricted from opening port 12345 and 8080...
@desktorp
@desktorp 5 жыл бұрын
The only reason self-hosting is not the obvious solution for everyone is because the ISP's hold the static IPs hostage. The average person's upload speed is more than adequate to handle the average person's web site. The hosting industry is fluffed up by a form of artificial scarcity.

Another option for those doing quite a bit of hosting, is something called a Dedicated Cloud. I just moved from cPanel/WHM do CapRover and containerized all of my websites and apps. $60/mo from Vultr is what i chose. I run about 300 websites.Their dedicated cloud includes a cloud-firewall and DDoS protection, static IPs. I also pay $20/mo for Stackpath that also offers CDN, DNS and smart DNS routing. I run everything from a phone system, Gitlab, docker registry and a lot of websites all in one place. I will add another and load balance sometime in the next few days. It's not for everyone, but it certainly was the next best option for me.

For some use cases, self-hosting is better than VPS. If you want to host applications for yourself such as owncloud, you want to use databases such as mysql, mongodb, redis etc --- self-hosting is way cheaper. Mongodb on VPS with 2 physical core (4 threads) and 2 GB memory will easily cost you several hundred dollars.

Good points on VPS vs the shared hosting. Many hosts' "unlimited" plans are as unlimited as cell phone "unlimited" plans. Total b.s.. However, with multiple domains there is an issue of email servers. This is where black box hosting shine IMHO. For $8 w month I can host "unlimited" domans and have a nice user interface to manage email accounts/aliases. Running, stting up and maintenance of websites themselves is not really a big deal and can be automated with scrips or programs like Ansible with providers like DigitalOcean or Linode for $5-10 a month. How deal with email hosting?

Sorry for spamming - but there is one more advantage to VPS - scalability. Let's say your website is getting very popular. Most of VPS let's you add resources like diskspace, ram etc. easly, without loosing data and with almost no downtime. If you host your website on raspberry from your home then you can have problem - invest in actual server station or move all content to vps anyway.

I used to have an old late 2000's Macbook with OS X Snow Leopard running on it. The cool thing about Snow Leopard is that t came with Apache pre-installed on it, along with a domain name system that Apple got going for you, they called it "Web Sharing," it was pretty cool. Nowadays, apparently Apache is still pre-installed on Macs, but they don't have the domain name system, and they took it out of the GUI so now you've got to use the terminal if you want to get anything done with it. Fucking Apple man, fucking Apple.
