The tr utility is not good for making text uppercase because it works only on the English alphabet. It does not translate letters like äčéšđǫž. To do a proper lowercase to uppercase, use sed 's/./\U&/g'. To convert uppercase to lowercase, it's 's/./\L&/g'. The entire UTF-8 range is supported. Another great option in sed is the y command, which does the similar thing as tr. For example, sed 'y/ckpt/ggbd/' will Spurdify text.

There is no such thing as uppercase unicode. Some languages do uppercase characters different than others even if you use the exact same lowercase character (also applies to lowercase). The correct way to do it is to set LANG locale before calling the program if you want correct behavior

I realize it's not the point, but you can achieve everything you did with "cat jdthesis.txt | grep Jesus | less" using just less itself. The '&' key in less does a filter-search to only display lines that match whatever pattern you type, in this case "Jesus".

`cut(1)` and `paste(1)` are why TSV are the best format for doing work in on Unix systems! JSON and other structured formats have their place, but for working from the command line, TSV is *the* S-tier way to do it.

>All system configuration is stored in text files Try telling that to the gnome project and dconf, which is pretty much just a copy of how Windows does the registry. They used to use gconf which was similar, but was stored in an xml file back in Gnome 2 (and xfce still does it with xconf), but dconf is just a single binary file.
