Dr Glenn McConell chats with Professor Marty Gibala from McMaster University in Canada about the physiological effects of high intensity interval training (HIIT) compared with continuous submaximal exercise training. Comparisons between the effects of HIIT and sprint interval training (SIT) are also discussed. The immense interest in HIIT was initiated by a ground breaking study that Marty conducted in 2005 comparing HIIT to submaximal exercise training. He has since been at the forefront of the area. The discussion focussed on HIIT vs SIT vs continuous submaximal exercise in regards to aerobic capacity, exercise performance, cardiovascular function, weight loss, insulin sensitivity and adherence to training. Sex differences in response to exercise training were also discussed. It was apparent from the discussion that although a lot is known in the area there is still much to learn.

Inside Exercise brings to you the who's who of exercise metabolism, exercise physiology and exercise’s effects on health. With scientific rigor, these researchers discuss popular exercise topics while providing practical strategies for all.
The interviewer, Emeritus Professor Glenn McConell, has an international research profile following 30 years of Exercise Metabolism research experience while at The University of Melbourne, Ball State University, Monash University, the University of Copenhagen and Victoria University.
He has published over 120 peer reviewed journal articles and recently edited an Exercise Metabolism eBook written by world experts on 17 different topics (link.springer.com/book/10.100.... Professor Gibala was an author of one of the chapters).

Very glad to hear you guys are concerned for science communication. There are a lot of us out here concerned for good health rather than optimal athletic performance.

Great questions. It would be interesting to see more research on slow-twitch mitochondria content from SIT, but it appears that may be the 1 thing that it can't replace from continuous moderately easy exercise.

I'm wondering if the continual glucose monitors (linked to computer analysis) could be a way to get personalised profiles of the effect of exercise. I think of this as the equivalent of Tim Spector looking at the gut microbiome.
