We challenged chefs of three different skill levels - amateur Desi, home cook Emily, and professional chef Joshua Resnick from the Institute of Culinary Education - to make us their take on deviled eggs. Once each level of chef had presented their creations, we asked expert food scientist Rose to explain the choices each made along the way. Which deviled eggs would you swipe from the appetizer tray first?

I love that Emily's level 2 is rooted in the essence of level 1. Elevate using chicharrones, but you can buy them as they are, they're already perfect.

The bowl of ice was quite a pro move for a level 1 chef. 😁 Also, so nice to experience Emily's culinary arc throughout this series. And I want to try the cured yolks as a garnish at some point, I just need to remember about it a week in advance.

Great suggestions! I would love the stir-fry. That's the kind of dish even a true level 1 can knock out of the park as a crowd-pleaser, but a level 3 can elevate it to heavenly.

As someone who loves hard-boiled eggs, I never thought to steam them before. Thanks, Josh! Also I typically just use cold water, but ice sounds even better. When I think of deviled eggs I think of head to tail cuts. Desi just showed me something new with the across-the-waist! Though his cutting and scooping techniques remind me too much of how it is for me half the time I try to make deviled eggs. Everyone's eggs look delicious, but I'd ask for a big glass of milk to go with Josh's.

I heard about steaming eggs several years ago and it's definitely a great way to cook them. Peel easily, cook consistently, no big pot of water to dump.

Honestly I never had these and I may try them out. Emily's recipe looks nice. My mom made something similar but she fried some mushrooms on the pan until browned and then blended them with yolks, then stuffed the eggs back. Very nice.

I grew up not liking deviled eggs… but I found a recipe I thought I’d like, so now I like sour cream and cheddar cheese deviled eggs. I like the taste of sour cream better, and the thicker consistency it creates. Having deviled eggs with some cheese or bacon makes a great breakfast or lunch.

I use my air fryer to cook hard boiled eggs. No water needed. 275° for about 16 minutes. They come out perfect.

Now I need to check who invented deviled eggs. I've always made them with curry, not chili. When I do a platter, I get a bunch of different curry pastes, and do a variety of different devillings.

I put serrano peppers on deviled eggs- so I'm the genius, chef. I also put a spot of avo mousse on the bottom of the egg before filling, fried prosciutto strip on the top, micro cilantro, poppy seeds on top. I'm proud of my deviled eggs.

I prepare deviled eggs every year for Christmas, as one of many appetisers, and I always used to add canned tuna in the filling, and I top each egg with a tiny caper and a thin slice of pickled pepper. They taste delicious!

All are perfect for their purposes! Loved #1 who wants to eat them himself n whis family and close friends. #2 steps up the looks to wow at a dinner party #3 is amazing, far too much time and effort for the family or regular dinner party. But is very amazing for a Michilin chef!! 5 stars for all!!

There is NO way Desi cooked his eggs for 17.5 minutes and they turned out still yellow. I have accidentally overcooked mine for 14 minutes and they have been grey around the edges.

The real deal aioli is just garlic and oil. What he made was garlic flavored mayo. He really shouldnt have said that if he was going to end up making that.

It's fairly common for people two think that aioli and garlic mayo are the same thing (wrong, obviously, but it's a common misconception), but to claim that the difference between aoili and mayo is that mayo doesn't have garlic ... Yeah >.
