HELLO! For those of you that have seen Grey's video: we are both aware of the similarities but just happened to release similar videos around the same time. For more info there is a link at the top of the description. ALSO, hi! It has been a long 3 months but now that my cancer treatment is (hopefully) over, I have enough energy to get back to making Vsauce3 videos! Incredibly happy to be making again and so happy to have you here watching! You're pretty darn awesome.

Vsauce is the type of channel to explain something and then leave me with more questions then answered.
@eliteextremophile8895
@eliteextremophile8895 7 жыл бұрын
Best kind of explanations are the ones resulting in more questions. If something is 'definite' there's no problems to solve, thus there's nothing to evolve to. For example. If I say that "rock is a rock and it consists of rock" and leave it to that. If everyone is happy with the answer and do not ask any more questions, the potential of a rock remains unsolved.

Okay. So the first sentence states that the second sentence is true, and the second sentence states that the first sentence is false. So if the first sentence says that the second sentence is true, but is proved false, that means the second sentence is true, meaning the first sentence is false and the second sentence is true.

+Best Tastes can't a paradox be philosophical ? you know for as long as science has existed philosophy has accompanied it.. truly the field of logic is half mathematical and half philosophical. so I hope you're not thinking these paradoxes are vague and unscientific, they have strong implications in science. for example the ship of theseus, or what makes the identity of something. if you can't answer to that, how can you assume that two objects are identical ? then, how can you count them ? the very notion of counting things is to admit that they're identical. like 4 bananas is always 4 bananas. but in the real world, if you take 4 bananas and 4 other bananas, they will not be identical. in mathematics the equal sign hides a little secret : "equal" things don't necessarily mean things are identical, but that they can be reduced to identical properties. it's the nature (and extent) of this reduction that the ship of theseus tries to clarify.

all of those paradoxes are basically crafted. they only exist within the framework of our symbol languages, but in fundamental reality, there are no symbols - no labeling, and since those paradoxes only arise when trying to label things, they are solely our creations. so in other words, coming up with those paradoxes is basically coming up with paradoxes for the sake of coming up with paradoxes... which I'd consider an endeavor with very little merit, but I guess we all have some strange hobbies, so no judging. ;)

+Holger Kelz Well, the last one is little different. It's more about a definition of 'me', which is a big philosophical problem. Also, it was mentioned in Star Trek Enterprise, where some people just refused to use teleporter, beliving it would kill them and replace with their clones.

Are you saying that the paradoxes are paradoxical themselves? You my friend, are a a paradox making genius!
@ZanderSabbag
@ZanderSabbag 8 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say all of them fall under this category. I believe most are created because someone tries to find absolute truths about concepts that vary, which isn't possible. Some may consider the boat that was disconstructed the same as before, some won't, that a matter of perception and opinion. Although valid, to question what one considers as "the" something is a flawed question in cases such as these. I have to agree with you on the autologocal and heterological part though.
@jimlockeyarchive3198

Yeah, nice point. But I think that these kinds of paradoxes do have value because all those 'labels' are to do with how humans connect and interact with the world.

@dewetolivier2362
@dewetolivier2362 3 жыл бұрын
If replicated to the quantum level , it would still count as the original apartment.If you create quantum replicas if the objects in your apartment , they would logically exhibit the exact same features (at least from any measurable perspective) as the original objects. The original apartment and the quantum copy of your apartment would be analogous to a entangled pair of particles , where the copy is the original , but the original is also the copy.... Unless i am wrong of course...

Oryon I clearly understand paradoxes better than you if you believe that the first statement of a paradox has to be true. Paradoxes are never true to begin with. Matter a fact there is no such thing as a true paradox. Every paradox either starts with a make-believe scenario or a non-factually based assumption. If you truly believe that, you'd better google some paradoxes ...

Yes. If there is something blocking the road, obviously the car in front would be "first". However, traffic jams when there are just too many cars on the road are caused by people slowing down. When one car slows down, it usually causes the car behind it to slow down and so on. When enough people have slowed down, traffic "backs up". Whoever the first person to stop is the first in the jam. Only get hets out of it very quickly, while the rest of the drivers behind him are screwed.

Yes. It's either one of the two cars in the accident who is first in the traffic jam. Or it's the very first car stopped in front of the accident.

+Chris G It's not really a paradox it's just a vague word. If we come up we a minimum and maximum amount of items or volume to form a heap then it's just a range of amounts. It's like 6 cows are "several", if you add 1 it's still "several", if you add another it's still "several" until eventually you decide to cut the term to an arbitrary amount in which case it is now "many".
@chrisg3030
@chrisg3030 8 жыл бұрын
+vitorsly Sure, the paradox disappears when we put specific numbers to amounts. Counting with numbers must have originated as a smart way of making one amount distinguishable at a glance from another (or an amount at another time) which otherwise look pretty much the same. One heap looks like another, but 256 is obviously different from 257. Numbers are like a kind of magnifying glass for the present and a telescope for knowing the future. Trouble is I don't always want to know.

A heap ceases to be a heap when its parts exist in a single layer, and when you can count them, or at least begin to count them and be confident that you can finish, at a glance.

@k9kid991 7 жыл бұрын
Ok, so if we started from that point that you just said: A single layer, you can count them, confident you can finish at a glance.... now just add ONE. SINGLE. Grain of sand to that, and it becomes a heap? One single grain of sand would really make that much of a difference? That's where the paradox comes in. You can never get to that defining moment when it transitions to a heap, because that means it's only one grain of sand different... which is barely noticable. =P
@rikuurufu5534
@rikuurufu5534 7 жыл бұрын
It's still not a heap to you, but it might be a heap to the next person.Or you might leave and come back, and re-evaluate your ability to count the grains, and find yourself a little intimidated. That exact point, the point at which anyone takes a fresh look at the sand after ONE. SINGLE. grain of sand has been added and concludes that they probably couldn't count the grains, is the point at which the heap is defined, especially if it's pushed together so that it's no longer in a single layer.
@k9kid991
@k9kid991 7 жыл бұрын
But still, let's say someone is at that point where they don't think they could count it, so they call it heap. If you tell them to close their eyes, and then you remove one single grain of sand, they won't even be able to tell the difference when they look again. They'll still call it a heap. Especially if you don't tell them if you actually took a grain away.
@neuronaut-666
@neuronaut-666 7 жыл бұрын
So how is this a paradox just because people can't agree on the number of grains of sand, which we can't count, make up a heap? "Heap" is a very general term, a visual one, one that I would say by definition is something that isn't counted.

I told Theseus’ ship paradox to my grandma years ago and she responded (very quickly) “as long as it has the same name, a ship is it’s name.” It’s really funny bc I think as long as the replaced object retains its identity, whether self identity or one given to it, it is in fact the same thing. So I think a person who is broken down atom by atom and replaced completely is more the same person than someone who has no brain activity or multi personality or any number of things that could cause u to lose your identity

In Neil Gaiman's sandman, there's a book that contains the ENTIRE story of the universe, describing everything that happens in it from its creation to its very end. However, no one is allowed to consult it to see the future, because then the book would become part of its own story. It would have to describe what it is describing, and so on and so forth.

Assuming an infinite time-span, sure, it's a nice thought about recursion, but the day ends, and as the day does, so do the daily events, making the story not infinite, just (potentially, depending on how fast you recount the story, and the daytime at which you started) very meta.

@puteborddelux1309
@puteborddelux1309 7 жыл бұрын
Alexis Jasso well then that specific heap is no longer a heap, but the next time you take a handful of sand, that is a heap. A heap just means an amount of something that you don't know the exact quantity of, so considering the next handful of sand you take is not the exact same amount as the one you counted, it's a heap.
@dangdudei1506
@dangdudei1506 7 жыл бұрын
The size of a heap is determined by your perception of the world. It's you trying to apply scale to something uncountable (as in it is not practical to count it). It's not about how many grains a heap consists of, it's about how big the sandpile is compared to something else. We are all different and have different perceptions of things. So the very definiton of heap will vary from person to person.

+blindpower95 I wouldn't really say this stoner philosophy. We can all see the answer is fairly obvious in both options. Its the explanation that makes the answer 100% correct that can not be explained. For example, how do you know that when you are driving inside a car it is not the world moving and the car is? What if the world is moving and you (the car) are stationary? Its easy to see the answer but difficult to explain and convince someone otherwise. Id call it basic philosophy.

At that point everything is you is a "machine". But you feel like anyone else - are you still *you?*

I would never even remotely consider teleporting myself. Sure, the person that comes out on the other side would think they're me and share all my memories and basically everything else that makes me me, but the real me, my actual self, would be dead from the disintegration that happens upon entrance of the teleporter. The fact that another perfectly identical version of myself exists couldn't possibly undo the death of the original thinking entity that was me.

Well, chances are none of the cells you currently have are the same cells that you were born with, so technically you are not the same person than when you were born, or even the person you were 10 years ago for that matter. I like to think teleportation in the way Jake described is pretty much like our natural process of cell renovation only accelerated, so while you could say you "die" every time you teleport, I still think that the person being formed on the other side is the original me.
@TheNotoriousDUDE
@TheNotoriousDUDE 7 жыл бұрын
TheLaserBeast The difference is that you don't need to die for the natural process of cell renovation to work. What exactly makes you think that your own conscious mind could live on in a copy of yours? As I said, the fact that they're identical to you, including your memories, is in no way capable of undoing the death of your original self. Your life ends upon teleportation while that of the copy begins. It won't make a difference for anyone, except yourself. In other words: The existence of a mind that is identical to yours doesn't mean that the mind it was copied from is going to live on as the copy, but rather be mimicked by it.

I like to think of the body as a country.... if you lose a part of it its like a part of the population dying off... but the government is still there, which is your brain. And as long as the government exists, and dictates the population (your cells), it''s still a country. But as soon as it leaves you, it is not you in any way. Just one citizen in the grand scheme of a nation. And then alcohol is like the federal government wanting to please itself by getting a buzz while harming the rest of the population... yeah Im going to deep with this.
@MichelGarciaH
@MichelGarciaH 7 жыл бұрын
State. Country is a geographical term. In you analogy, alcohol would be a bad public policy. Now, the question is, still following you analogy: if the government is replaced, through an election, or a coup, does that mean the State is different? Is it now a different State? France under the Bourbons, France under Napoleon, and France under the Republic, are they the same France, or different ones?
@date_vape
@date_vape 7 жыл бұрын
Michel Garcia It's not a direct analogy, but a new leader could represent a paradigm shift in your own mind. People change personality very quickly when put under pressure, much like governments. Like Jake said, are we the same person when we wake up? The same can apply to states over time. Sometimes it's just more noticable and immediate, in the case of a life changing event - or nation changing event. People can completely change overnight, as if someone else is suddenly at the helm. I just find it fascinating how life seems to develope fractally. It started with atoms, atoms that bonded together to create simple enzymes and biological molecules that eventually ended up creating single celled organisms, which then evolve in to very simple groups of cells held together to co-operate(similar to tribes), then with an abundance of food/resources by grouping together, some cells become specialized for other purposes, such as receiving and interpreting light which only increases the abundance of resources, similar to civilations over the course of history. Eventually, it ended up evolving into a structure that is so complex that it seems irreducibly complicated - much like state-systems and complicated economic structures. Eventually humans will colonize other planets, and connect them (as in trade and being united socially), which once again reflects on the entire process. It's as if states and society are their own type of entity, like its just the natural step up in evolution that will almost never end. The similarites don't end there though. Roads are so similar to our blood veins... Police are like white blood cells. The state is like the brain, and all other citizens are the nerves that send massive amounts of information to the brain that has to be simplified to process, and even then there are massive conflicts within our own mind. Food and other essential resources are distributed across nations by trucks, which resemble blood cells delivering oxygen and other important nutrients. What happens if the circulation is cut off from a certain area of the state? It immediately deteriorates and becomes emaciated. I could list more but you get the idea. The idea that the universe is so bizarrely diferent on the atomic scale vs planetary scale, yet at the same time they both follow very very similar, fascinating patterns.

Fayez Hawseea No... Im saying that a country can be compared to the human body and there are many similarities. You're just an indivisual part of an extremely connected network of other indivisual that makes us all into something completely different as a whole; able to accomplish much more than any of us alone. Just like a single celled organism may have it's own agency... and even cells in your body have a very very limited form of free will and many of them can make very basic decisions... When you combine all of those together it becomes an extremely complex network of connected indivisuals, and once again this network of indivisuals working together make something completely new as a whole. And I'm sure at some point this process will evolve further into a next step that we can't even conceive
