Hey guys, it's been pointed out to me that Iberian Lynx and Kulan have not been reintroduced to the Iberian Highlands yet but Rewilding Europe plan on reintroducing both species. The Ibex seen in the videos are actually Alpine Ibex, a close relative of Iberian Ibex. There were no videos of Iberian Ibex available to use and so I used Alpine Ibex clips to help portray the story. Thanks for watching the video! 🙌🙌

I think it’s fitting to rewilding Asiatic Lions, Spotted hyenas and African wild dogs to Eurasia to replace their ancient ancestors
@Eco-Nerd
@Eco-Nerd Ай бұрын
@@darnelljones1918 it would be amazing to see lions and hyenas but we're a long way away from any introductions like that sadly! Don't think African Wild Dogs had a particularly close European relative. There was the European Dhole but that's much more closely related to the dhole or Asian Wild Dog!

@@Eco-Nerd but what about the Eurasian hunting dogs. Surely they’re from the same Lycano family and plus Dholes are more like jackals cousins in the wild dogs family if you catch my drift. Unlike Dholes, Wild dogs need a lot of space and they’re endangered. So it fitting for a mid- large group size of them to roam vast areas of space so that they can raise their pups and defend themselves against new predators such as bears and wolves

Now let's rewild Lapland in Sweden. Say what? It's a huge reindeer farm, for the modern reindeer industry. Reindeer farming is only a few hundred (400-800) years old, and back before industrialization, they had to keep relatively small herds, and coexist with predators, as well as wild reindeer. Now, the wild reindeer is extinct in Sweden, and "domestic" reindeer roam free with impunity across half of the country's area. They live like wild animals, but are still given the privileges of domestic livestock, which means wolves are completely absent from this northern half of Sweden, this "pristine wilderness" (it would indeed make perfect habitat for 1000+ wolves). Instead, the few wolves we have are forced down south, where they are put into conflict with sheep farmers, and are at much higher risk of being killed by traffic. Sweden's wildlife is very much in control of the reindeer industry and the hunting lobby. I am not against hunting per se and want to become a hunter myself, but that subculture here is deeply entrenched in early 20th century wolf hate and outdated ideas of nature.
@Eco-Nerd
@Eco-Nerd Ай бұрын
@@Aethuviel that's interesting! I know that wolves in Sweden are often culled which is such a pity. There are so many ways of coexisting with wildlife! Yeah I agree with your stance on hunting, there are benefits to it and often hunters are wildlife advocates but like in any group of people, there are people in hunting groups who only have their own interests in mind and don't care about the wildlife
@skitkorvboogie
@skitkorvboogie Ай бұрын
From what I can gather I’d say the wolf population in Sweden is too small to recover. Since they’re so few they’ve become gravely affected by inbreeding.
@Aethuviel
@Aethuviel Ай бұрын
@@skitkorvboogie All we need is to allow more Russian wolves to wander in. Problem is that the reindeer farmers tend to shoot them as soon as they show up. Sweden's wolves were completely extinct 1878-1978, all we have are Russian wolves that wandered in.

Hey guys, Moose (Alces Alces) are known as Elk in Europe and I'm Irish (which is in Europe) hence the "known as moose in America" comment. Elk (Cervus Canadensis) are known as Wapiti in Europe. Early European settlers in America actually misnamed Elk (Cervus Canadensis) because they were so large they assumed that's what Elk were. It has since caused lots of confusion 🤯 A couple of people have tried to correct me so I'm just putting it here to clear things up 😊
@RCSVirginia

To @Eco-Nerd Yes, our Elk are your Red Deer, and our Moose are your Elk. I'm not sure if they are cognate species or races of the same species.
@Eco-Nerd
@Eco-Nerd Ай бұрын
@@RCSVirginia It's even a little more confusing than that 🤯 Red Deer are a separate species as well (cervus elaphus) we don't actually have what is known as Elk in America (cervus canadensis), in Europe but it is the closest relative to Red Deer, even though it's about twice the weight. Moose and what we call Elk in Europe (Alces Alces) are the same species
@sing2118
@sing2118 6 күн бұрын
It's funny these different names between countries, in France (I'm French), the Moose is called Elan or Orignal in Canada and the Elk is called Wapiti too. We also have the Reindeer which is called Caribou when it is in North America or Renne when it is found in Scandinavian countries. But at least in France we didn't call the "Penguin" of the southern hemisphere like the Penguin of the northern hemisphere. In our country the little Pinguin is "Alca torda" (le petit Pingouin) and the great Pinguin "Pinguinus impennis" (le grand Pingouin) and the penguins of the southern hemisphere are called Manchots (Sphenisciformes) which avoids confusion but as the English term is more popular, many French people call the Manchot a Penguin and do not know the real Penguin, which shows that the different languages bring a lot of confusion and fortunately Latin names exist...

@paulmyers3978
@paulmyers3978 Ай бұрын
I'm not sure if this is how they went about it, but if I were to approach a similar project, I would release the greatest number of Przewalski's wild horses as possible, fully reproductively active, not gelded, then supplement herd numbers with geldings of similar breeds to get the full herd benefit. Eventually the primitive breeds will die out leaving only the true wild horses after they've had time to build their population
@Eco-Nerd
@Eco-Nerd Ай бұрын
@@paulmyers3978 yeah I understand that logic, especially because Przewalski's Horse itself was never native to Europe, good to have some European Wild Horse gentics in there . I also understand keeping them seperate as Przewalski's Horse and the Tarpan (the ancestor of domestic horses) were seperate subspecies! I'm sure Rewilding Europe have done their research and are doing what's best 😊
@klaverenvrouwke
@klaverenvrouwke Ай бұрын
That’s not happening anywhere. They use different breeds in different projects. The only place that I know of that mixes breeds is Lika plains where they mixed koniks with a local breed. But nowhere are przewalski’s mixed with domestic breeds. And there is no risk of “natural mixing” either as the reserves are on opposite sides of Europe

@Eco-Nerd

@@coleopteraa to the best of my knowledge, no. The cat population is regulated by the amount of prey so the population doesn't get too high unlike our pet cats which are in artificially high numbers because of the food and care we give them, they just kill for fun every night. As Chernobyl is in Europe, the prey are adapted to wildcats so it's not drastically different to their usual predators. The dog population mostly sticks to the city as the wolves attack them if they venture in to the woods. Humans have started feeding and giving care to the dogs as death rates were very high and humans don't like to see dogs dying. Hope that answers your question!

Introducing bears and wolfs in that area is senseless hippie initiative asking for trouble as the area is well populated and the locals will be unsafe.

It is or...wild great animals....let nature free, or.......humans take over all nature (what they have been doing for millions of years). Cannot be both. In my opinion these two opposite visions will fight untill one option survives. Which one it will be? The one with the most destructive weapons. But then........what moves overthere? What sprouts out of the soil? After centuries?......

Fallow deer are a bad choice; they are a Persian Domesticated species imported to Europe by the Etruscans before Rome.

@@mysoneffa2417 Fallow Deer once lived all over Europe until they were hunted to extinction across most of their range. Turkey, Iran and the Balkans were the only places they remained so it was actually an accidental form of rewilding by the Etruscans and later the Normans in Great Britain to reintroduce them to Europe

@@Eco-Nerd No the contemporary Fallow deer are a DOMESTICATED Species that went Feral long after the Fall of Rome not before. They're about as wild as an escaped milk cow.

An elk is not "known in America" as a moose, or vice versa. They are different species.

@@karenbartlett1307Hi Karen, Moose (Alces Alces) are known as Elk in Europe. Elk (Cervus Canadensis) are known as Wapiti in Europe. Cervus Canadensis (Elk in America) were actually misnamed by early European settlers and it has since caused a lot of confusion between Americans and Europeans. We call moose (Alces Alces), elk over here in Europe hence the "known as moose in America" 😊

You might have to double check that. Whilst, yes they'll be indigenous to their respective regions, they are the same species, just known by different names.

@@MatthewAbbottHighskiesthanks for watching the video! Alces Alces is called moose in America but called Elk in Europe Cervus Canadensis is called Elk in America but is called Wapiti in Europe.
