Hallo Leute 😃, please excuse the late release today and the poor audio quality in the beginning of the video. If there is anyone out here who is familiar with this sound issue we are facing in this video, and would be able to help us with professional advice, we'd be more than thankful. You can email us at info(at) easygerman.org Liebe Grüße, Cari und Janusz

I was so shocked when you mentioned only reasons about Deutschland to learn German. Sorry but this is not the only country who speaks German, you should open your mind a little bit before saying things like that.
@jonathanswinsburg7716
@jonathanswinsburg7716 4 жыл бұрын
@@Wawruto If you insert the country you have in mind in place of Germany, then maybe it would work better for you. If you listen closely to what she is saying, it is not giving you specific reasons, but rather encouraging YOU to find YOUR OWN reasons. These reasons will vary from person to person. Hope that helps. Viel Glück!

When I heard your sentence about Janusz that he still makes mistakes after 30 years I just remember the book by Mark Twain about Germany and German language. There he says " An intelligent man needs 30 hours to learn English, 30 days to learn French and 30 years to learn German." :)

There are actually verb-preposition pairs in English which alter the meaning of the base verb. They function very much like trennbare Verben auf Deutsch. Example: to turn to turn around to turn away (can have several meanings, including to refuse service to) to turn up to turn off to turn on It has surprised me that I've never found any coverage in English grammar texts of these verb+preposition pairs. The pairs are similar, but have distinctly different meanings from the base verb by itself. When I point this out to my English-speaking students, I think it has helped them to accept and learn the trennbare Verben

There are a lot of things in English that are similar to things that "only" exist in German but seem to fly under the radar because we do the exact same thing but separate the clause into several words. To quote Gegard Mousasi: "Same shit, different toilet".
@ismaelcebrianmarco7288

Rob Shearer these verbs are normally called "phrasal verbs" and when you learn English as a foreign language, you definitely learn them as a grammar topic (and then as vocabulary, again and again). In my experience most English speakers don't know almost anything of the grammar of their own language. I always wonder which topics are covered in an English class when you're native.
@ismaelcebrianmarco7288
@ismaelcebrianmarco7288 5 жыл бұрын
Rob Shearer also it's true that trennbare Verben and phrasal verbs are similar ( at least in the sense that the meaning is totally different from the standalone verb, but trennbare Verben are not always formed by a verb + preposition. For example: kennenlernen

I've been learning German on and off since I was 16. After 2 years of high school German and 1 year of college German, I went to Germany at age 18 for about 7 months, and 2 months in German speaking Switzerland. Since then, I continued with many college German courses over the years, and now I'm watching your videos. Had I not actually gone to Germany, I really doubt that my German would be anywhere near the level it is today. I've gone back to Germany and Switzerland for a couple, short-term travel visits before and after having kids. And now, thanks to videos like yours, I'am able to continue improving and maintaining my German. I'm 65 now. Occasionally I run into some older, native German speakers here in California, and to my amazement, they have "lost" much of their German speaking ability. John aus Kalifornien

Hello and thank you for your videos. I think most people can't deal with frustration and anxiety and that is a problem when you're learning a new language as an adult. Because you think complex sentences you use everyday, but when you want to express those ideas in the L2, you suddenly can't even say "Yesterday I had a coffee with my friends" correctly, in a way it´s like being a baby again. So many people just quit. I've studied English all my life, I am a certified English to Spanish translator, and yet I learn new words and concepts every day. If you understand that learning a language is not like winning a video game (I agree with you idea of the sinuous path), but rather a beautiful way to discover a new culture and its people, then you will enjoy since the moment you learn to say "Hallo". Now I am very excited because next week I will start a German course and your videos are a great inspiration. Greetings from Argentina!

My biggest motivation of learning German is music. German music made me realized that German was a very beautiful language. My favorite German musicians are Die Lochis und Kayef. They make German Language sounds so very beautiful. Everytime I feel frustrated learning German, I listen to their songs and my frustation is decreasing. Then I started to watch German Movies, only some are good. But yeah because of those, I keep learning German. If someone only has self-purpose like study or work, it doesn't really help keeps you going. "Love" the language and the culture is the key. Or I might say "Learning German by heart".

Thank you, your video was very interesting and easy to watch :) I wish I could have a real motivation to learn German, I really like German but I'm stressed because I have an exam at the end of the year (I'm in high school in France) and I feel forced to learn German. I hate the way they "teach" us German (I know it's not that bad) and I can't work or practice my German because of this. I kinda hate myself for being like this since I've been twice in Germany and had an incredible time even without speaking German. I know I can do better but I feel like it's against my own values and sometimes I don't even try. And at the same time, I just have to pass this exam. Sorry teenager problems...

Excellent advice! I love your videos and I hope to continue learning with them. The motivation part you mentioned is key. It describes very well how we feel when, after a few days or weeks making good progress, we try to play some movies, songs, or commercials in German, and notice that we don't understand a single word. However, I can sit in Google Translate, start typing things in German, and actually see that the Spanish translation makes sense and looks like what I was trying to say, which is very encouraging. We just have to keep on trying, have multiple motivations like those you described, and give the process enough chance before giving up.

I can´t speak yet in German, but I loved the thinking about the passive - learning, and the fact that sometimes there are happening things behind your active learning. The thing is that sometimes we don´t notice that, but it´s very interesting and motivating to think in that.

Great Video! I just finished up my 2nd college course in German. I am not taking any German courses this spring, and it will be about 9 months before I take the next course. I was looking for ways to stay engaged and motivated during this time and this video was very helpful. I found my first course, Elementary German, fairly easy, especially with utilizing additional resources like Easy German. Then came Elementary German 2 which was less small talk, and more grammar focused. I can write in German okay, but speaking became very hard. When thinking about case, conjugations, and grammar rules, I forget even the most basic vocabulary and lose my train of thought. Thanks for these great tips and the reminder that learning a new language is not a linear process.

I lived in Germany as a small child and learnt German in Kindergarten but we moved back to the UK only a few years later and my "fluent" German learnt as 5 year old was no longer practised and almost forgotten. Now my own children are studying German at school and I am re-learning with them and your site which I discovered by chance on KZbin is the best learning resource. Your enthusiastic and friendly approach has totally motivated me to get back to work, vielen dank!

Dear Cari, Im about to go to Germany now for the third time in 3 years and each visit feels more comfortable/manageable thanks to your videos. I found Easy German videos at a point when I felt my German had stalled in group class settings. I was worried I'd get stuck at A1.2, that I would never learn German the way I learned French and I asked myself the questions you mentioned here. Into my routine every day I added at least 2 videos. Then, suddenly, you and Janusz made me feel happy and confident in my motivation to keep going. Thank you so much. I hope to meet you next time Im in Berlin.
