Here's number 27 in this series! I hope you like it! This course will feature our first "repeat performance" as I take on the Missouri course with the 4" Combat Magnum. This time around, however, the Model 19 will be stoked with full-power 158 grain Magnums! Check out the video to see how it goes.

"Wondernine" is a term referring to the DOUBLE ACTION HAMMER FIRED double stack semi-autos of the 80s that replaced the duty revolver. Modern polymer framed striker fired guns do not fit the term.

The late round in the 25-yard stage was so close I had to go back and watch it again. I have to say this is a compelling series, made more so by the fact you are not a factory sponsored shooter. The S&W MDL 19 K FRAME .357 Magnum is my Favorite S & W Revolver it was my first Handgun I owned I also had the MDL 66 in stainless steel which was the same pistol I had a 6" Mdl 19 and several 4" and 2 1/2 " snub nose but the 6" was my deer hunting pistol in the 1970s with the 158-grain Keith cast lead bullet with the gas check base. Very accurate with the bullseye powder, 296 and 630p ball powder. In my duty weapon, I carried the Federal 357 magnum JHP 125 Grain load.

@@hrfunk I bought my first handgun from Shotgun News, via a friend with an FFL . It was a S&W 581. Delivered with with the useless Magna stocks no one likes, in a blue cardboard box and wrapped in the classic brown paper. The classic S&W shopping experience! I think it was like 250 bucks at the time. This was in 1991. I really wanted the 610. The 581 is nice old classic well worth some exposure if you can find one! From what I understand though the .357 era was actually quite short, as far as Police duty weapon goes. In America the .38 special reigned supreme for most of the 20th century.
@hrfunk
@hrfunk 5 жыл бұрын
@@CandidZulu That's hard to quantify because there are so many different states and agencies. Certainly New York City (the largest department in the country) suck with the .38 Special for almost the entire 20th Century. Still, many others used the .357 Magnum. I think it's really hard to say which one was more popular from 1953 until about 1985.
@CandidZulu
@CandidZulu 5 жыл бұрын
@@hrfunk My impression is that the .357 was used primarily from the 70's, up until the 9mm replicated it in the 90's. Many dept seem to have bought .357 revolvers but issued .38spl ammo. But I have no statistics, its just an impression from reading and watching videos.
@sgtmajtrapp3391

A true classic revolver very popular with law enforcement since its introduction. This was the gun most coveted for duty carry in the 70s especially the stainless version Model 66. We voted for the first issue duty gun and were told we would get what the majority wanted. Well the vast majority wanted the Model 66 .357, 3 people wanted to get a .38 Special. Well that magnum cost $10 more per weapon, so we ended up with guess what, S&W Model 67 Combat Masterpiece .38 Special revolvers. I purchased a S&W Model 19 2.5" .357 Magnum however for my 2nd off duty handgun, outstanding companion.

Missouri leo here. I've qualified on this course and other department's courses over the years. The only thing that you would need to change is your use of cover. We are trained to stand back from cover, maintaining approximately one foot of distance from the muzzle (muzzle plus a foot as we call it). The officer then maintains their use of cover and leans out from behind cover. This maintains as much cover and safety for the officer, while only giving the suspect a very small target. If done properly the officer can see their target fully, while from the target position you can only see the firearm and small portion of the officer's head. Leaning on the barrier is a disqualification.

I have fond memories of my Model 19. One of the most satisfying is wining a stage in a bowling pin match against another shooter with auto loader of some sort. We were both green and nervous and had to reload. Never-the less I did win that stage. Oh and I fired the Model 19 single action! I had to part with that gun some years ago...but things are not right without a K Frame. I now have a Model 65 in 3" which actually has a better trigger that the old Model 19. Looking forward to your next qualification video.

Very nice 👍! I think the adverse conditions make the test more accurate because real world conditions will always be a factor. Do any of the test you have done require you to be under stress such as running ? I think they should. I really like the 19 combat mag! I have been looking at revolvers GP100 Ruger, 686 S&M Redhawk 8 shot and many others there are so many medium frame revolvers. I'm seriously thinking about the 19 combat because it seems like such a beautiful and functional revolver plus it has such a long history. What is your opinion on the 19 and is there a medium 357 mag you would choose over it? I would not be using it as a carry just range fun and accuracy. Thanks great video as always 👍
@hrfunk
@hrfunk 5 жыл бұрын
Brian Lee Thanks Brian! There have been one or two courses that have required some form of physical exertion prior to shooting, but that’s far from the norm. The vast majority have had no such requirement. With regard to a medium frame .357 Magnum recommendation, there are a LOT of good options. Part of the decision depends upon how much you want to invest, and part depends upon what type and how much ammo you intend to shoot. The S&W K-frame Combat Magnums (Model 19/66) were meant to be fired mostly with .38 Special ammo and occasionally with full-power .357’s. When used as such, they typically serve very well for a long time. For extremely heavy/hot .357’s they are a little light, and I wouldn’t feed them a steady diet of that sort of ammo. If you’re looking to shoot a lot of heavy/hot .357’s, then I’d move up to the L-frame revolvers (586/686) or Ruger GP100. These will hold up better to the additional stress generated by the more powerful ammo.

Also interesting that the course begins at close contact and retreats to cover at long range. These courses typically run the opposite direction. It would be interesting to see it run as a single stage, with single iterations of each drill.

@@hrfunk Im in a minority, but I'd like to see failure drills performed differently. They're always done as basically a rehearsed 'triple-tap', which negates their purpose, in my opinion. I always pause by retracting or lowering the weapon, before re-engaging with a head snapshot. When working with a partner, we just randomly call out a failure, on standard drills. Its best, when they're in a reload or in midst of coming back to a ready position.
@hrfunk
@hrfunk 5 жыл бұрын
@@springbloom5940 You and I are on the same wavelength. Here's a reply I gave to another viewer regarding the failure drill "One thing that bothers me about the Mozambique/failure/body armor/two-to-the-body-one-to-the-head drill is the way it is typically conducted. As I understand things, the drill was originally devised as an emergency measure to stop a hostile threat that already sustained two shots to the body. That being the case, it seems there SHOULD be a pause after the first two body shots to assess their effectiveness. After that pause, if a head shot is necessary, the shooter would then deliver it. In the context of a qualification course, the instructor would say "Threat!" at which time the shooter would fire the first double-tap to the body. The shooter would then pause before firing the head shot. After a momentary (albeit, brief) pause, the instructor would either shout "Threat" or "No Threat" and the shooter would respond accordingly. It seems to me that conducting the drill as stated above would better demonstrate the original tactic and help reinforce the idea of assessing the effectiveness of one's shots before firing more (i.e. fire discipline). The problem is, shooting the two shots to the body and following up with the head shot as quickly as possible is fun and most shooters (including me) like to see just how fast they can deliver the coup de gras. Even so, for sound training, I think it would be better to conduct the drill as I laid out. "

That's interesting. When I look at the B27 it looks massive. On the other hand, the scoring area is much smaller than the overall silhouette.
