Starting a bedtime routine as early as possible in your baby's life helps teach healthy sleep habits. With our routine we have successfully taught our baby the difference between night and day and he now sleeps every night for over 10 hours! I hope you find this video informative and helpful in your own parenthood journey. If you have any questions regarding how I sleep trained him please comment below or contact me!

I'm watching this at 4.28am NZT after getting up like the 100 times already cos baby keeps waking up... I'm amaze this is actually achievable and some babies do go to sleep without a fuss.

I completely agree. Even his head control and interest in books he is a very calm baby so his behaviour is different. This creates a unrealistic expectation for most mothers because our baby's are very different

Cngratulations, 10 hour stretches at this age are amazing! My 4 month old has never slept more than 3,5 hour stretches. I'm doing everything by the book with routines and a schedule but I just can't get him to fall asleep on his own! He nurses to sleep for 30-40 minutes every night... after 10-15 min he doesn't eat anymore, it's just sucking but he doesn't take a pacifier... When you started sleep training you said in another comment you would nurse him to sleep and then slightly wake him and soothe him again (rocking him in your arms I suppose?). Did he cry in the beginning? Did you put him in the bed fully asleep again after soothing him or was he still slightly awake? Would really appreciate your answer! Thank you and take care
@togetheradventure9399
@togetheradventure9399 4 жыл бұрын
I started by replacing the nursing to sleep with the rocking to sleep, after a few days of rocking to sleep, I would then rock him but put him down before he fell asleep. He would fuss as soon as I put him down so I would have to pick him up and start again. I would continue repeating these steps untill he fell asleep. It does require a lot of patience, but after 2/3 days of this he eventually would just stay calm as I put him down.

My son will be 4 months old on April 13 (I can’t even believe how fast it’s gone.. it had me crying the other day lol) but for the past month or so he’s been sleeping in his crib. He goes to bed at 7-7:30pm and if he wakes up at all it will be around 12-2am and then again at 5:30-7:30am and he’ll be up for the day by 7:30. The other night he slept for 12 hours straight. I am one happy mama!! I wanted to sleep train early. If he cries I give him 15 mins, as long as I know he’s dry and fed before the 15mins started, before I’ll go see him. He’s doing great at self soothing and I know it’s hard for some moms to not co sleep or to pick your baby up as soon as they cry but you’re really just creating a monster especially with the picking up when they cry. If your baby is fed, dry and safe it’s ok to let them cry it out a bit. ☺️ happy sleep training!

Hello 👋! He goes to bed at the same time every day between 6-7pm . At this age he was napping 3 times a day, for around 1.5hr each time. Morning, after lunch and late afternoon. I do belive that sleep promotes sleep, and a baby who doesn't nap well will struggle to sleep at night. 💕

It was a constant battle for a few days. He would wake up and fuss, I would soothe him put him down, he would wake up and fuss and we repeat this cycke untill he fell asleep. Some nights we would do this for hours but the hard work pulled off as he eventually would relax and sleep on his own.

@@togetheradventure9399 How many nights of wake up-fuss-soothe-repeat did it take? And would you rock him to a full sleep during this cycle for any of the nights or just until he was drowsy? My 4 month old wakes every 2-3 hours at night. I'm very lucky if he sleeps over 3 hours, EXTREMELY lucky if I get 4 hours... Also, i don't use a pacifier... do you think that is what makes the difference? Any moms out there that had success without a pacifier? Finally, did you ever swaddle him and if so, how did you transition out?

Hi ! Thanks for making this video.. I have a few questions regarding routines that I hope you can answer to help another momma out! I see that your little man then was very alert and calm right before bath time to when you placed him in his crib to fall asleep by himself. The entire routine seemed very RELAXED..Is that because he knew what to expect and/or he isn’t tired yet to fall asleep until bedtime ? I’m struggling with day naps and My boy (4 months old) is crying loudly, when I try to lay him in the position to sleep. It’s like he’s overtired and wants to sleep but can’t get in the right mood. I end up having to rock and nurse after calming him as he can’t self settle yet and then he will fall asleep in my arms before putting him down (this is the only way for now!). I feel like I’m missing all the tired cues. he only cat naps, which makes him super tired. His longest stretch at night is almost 8 hours but it’s rare. Most day’s it’s closer to 4-5 hours. Then its every 1-2 hours after that 🥱😧. Im wondering: am I feeding enough during the day for him to sustain about 10 hours straight? Are his naps not long enough? Would love to know what your day routine is, in terms of naps, feeds etc.. and how you manage to stop nursing him to sleep. What kind of sleep training did you do, and how did you do it! Also with the pacifier, do you think that helps him sleep, and the toys in his crib also, does that help him self-settle? Thank you In advance!
@togetheradventure9399
@togetheradventure9399 4 жыл бұрын
Hi!!! As we started this routine soon after birth by this point he knew what to expect and is used to all the steps we take before bedtime. He is now 16 months and is still the same, will now give a kiss and say 'night night' before putting himself to bed. In the early days when he was nursing almost every hour or two we made sure to make a clear distinction between night and day. During the day I kept all lights on, windows open, lots of singing, dancing and playing. But at night I would nurse him and change his nappy in the dark, no music, no playtime. Once that was established he starting sleeping longer stretches at night. Once he started sleeping over 8 hrs at night, during the day he was fed on demand and took 3 naps. I find that sleep promotes sleep, and the less a baby sleeps the harder it is to fall asleep. In terms of 'sleep training', I would just gently wake him up after he fell asleep on the breast and soothe him back to sleep before putting him down. We did this for a few days untill I eventually didn't need to soothe him, I would just gently wake him up, say goodnight and put him down. With nursing at night, every baby will be different. Somewhere between 4-6 months babies stop needing to feed at night as they should be getting enough calories during the day to sustain them. We must follow their lead as they will tell us what they need. So I can't tell you when you should stop feeding at night as each baby will have different needs. Please feel free to send me a message on Instagram or facebook @togetheradventure if you want more details on sleep/hunger signs or have more questions as it's hard to get into detail on a YT comment! :)

Great video; thanks for sharing! Does your little one ever (or did ever) wake in the night for a feeding? If so, how did you wean him from it and encourage him to sleep the full 10 hours? My little one is 1-week shy of 4 months and the longest she sleeps for is 6 hours before she wakes up hungry. Then once she's back asleep, it's 2-3 hour sleeps after that (twice, back to back) before she's up for the day. I'd love to get her sleeping a full 10-12 hours

Hang in there mama! It wasn't always this easy, I had to not only be strict with baby but strict with myself. Once I knew the night feed wasn't needed (for him 10 - 12 weeks old, but I know the recommended is after 6 months). I dropped it. He would wake up in the middle of the night looking to nurse not for hunger but for comfort and I wouldn't give him milk, of course that leaves me with a crying baby at 3 in the morning. I had to find other ways to soothe him, shushing, singing, rocking, but I just wouldn't bring him to bed with me or feed him. Sometimes it was hours before he fell back asleep. This went on for weeks before he stopped waking for the feed. We needed to separate the association with feeding and sleeping, so that he wouldn't need milk to go back to sleep and we wouldn't have ongoing sleep problems. It was hard and tiresome, and sometimes I felt like I was being a bad mum but it has paid off in the long run and he is a very good sleeper now. I will be gradually moving out of his room, so that hopefully by 6 months he sleeps in his own room. Lion door bouncer: amzn.to/2FhpqER

I now have a second newborn and she isn't a fan of sleeping on her own, but I just persevere. I will comfort/feed her and put her down, keep repeating this untill she eventually settles. Its tiring but I know it will pay off in the end. Good luck 💕

He does yes. I never co-slept so I can't really comment on that. He always slept in his own bed from birth. I would nurse him and put him back in his bed. Around 4 months I stopped nursing him at night as he would never take a full feed, just suck for a minute and then go back to sleep. I took that as a sign he was no longer hungry. So instead of lifting him from his bed to nurse I would leave him in his bed and soothe him back to sleep by stroking his face or belly and singing songs. He eventually stopped waking up, and if he did he would quickly go back to sleep.

That's great! If baby sleep 12hrs, how often do you feed him during the day? I'm just wondering cause I usually wake mine up at around 10-11pm to feed and he goes back to sleep easily and just wakes up at 7am.

He was fed on demand during the day. Whenever he wanted. I didn't express any milk so it's hard to know exactly how much he drank but on an average day every 2-3 hours for 10 mins, 6-8 times in total, some days more, some days less.

@togetheradventure9399

Somewhere between 4 - 6 months babies should be getting enough calories during the day that they don't need milk at night. Of course, even if a baby doesn't need to eat in the middle of the night they might still wake up wanting to and its then up to the carer to decide how they would like to proceed. Each baby will be different, my son didn't need a full feed at night, so we cut them out as soon as we could in order to make sleeping easier for both him and us. Although I would never leave him hungry if he was showing me that he was hungry. I always fed on demand.

Hang in there mama! Your just giving your baby what he needs. 3 months is still young, when your baby is getting a bit bigger and older it will get easier. At this age we have to give them what they want as they know best! Once baby is older then you can make changes to feeding at night. 💕

No I had stopped nursing him during the night by this point. Somewhere between 4 - 6 months babies should be getting enough calories during the day that they don't need milk at night. Of course, even if a baby doesn't need to eat in the middle of the night they might still wake up wanting to and its then up to the carer to decide how they would like to proceed. Each baby will be different however and I wouldn't put too much pressure before 6 months to stop night time feeds as some babies (in terms of physically) will not be ready before then, take their lead as they know best. I feed on demand during the day, whenever he wanted some days I was feeding every hour.

Oh by gosh I need to do this... did you use any online website or program to guide you to sleep train? What about his naps during the day - do you nurse him to sleep then and how are you also separating sleep and feeds during naps? Mine refuses to nap all day... I’m always fighting him to sleep, and even then he won’t sleep unless I put him in a sling and go out for a walk. That’s absolutely not sustainable and I don’t know how to get him to sleep in his cot during the day for his naps. Any tips?
@togetheradventure9399

Before the arrival of Benji I had read "The no cry sleep solution: gentle ways to help your baby sleep". As it was clear that for us to function as a family good sleep was very important but I also knew I couldn't face leaving my baby to cry or fuss. I had a clear plan from the moment he was born to introduce good sleep habits. In terms of nursing I would gently wake him whenever he fell asleep while feeding and allow him to fall asleep again on his own. Naps during the day were treated the same. At this age he had three naps, morning, early afternoon and early evening. Sometimes those naps were in the pram and in the sling. I am a firm believer that sleep promotes sleep. A baby who doesn't nap well during the day will struggle to sleep well at night. And lastly please don't worry yourself too much. All of this is a guidance but not all babies are the same. Your baby will sleep eventually. Stay strong and good luck!!! Please ask away if there is anything I didn't address.

My baby is now almost 11 weeks old. I’ve been going into the room to start our night routine Around 8/9pm. I brush my teeth/wash my face while she is in her rocker then I change her diaper and put her in sleep sack. I always try rocking her to sleep but I usually end up with a crying overtired baby and have to feed her to sleep. The past few nights she has been very overtired and am wondering if I can change the bedtime to 6/7 instead of 8/9. I would love more time with my husband too. I just don’t want to throw off her schedule.. she usually wakes around 3am to eat after she goes to sleep at 8/9.. Thoughts?? Lol
@togetheradventure9399
@togetheradventure9399 3 жыл бұрын
Personally I think 8/9 PM is too late. And would gradually move the bedtime earlier. You can start by moving it 15 mins earlier every couple of days till you get to 6/7ish. And yes 'Mummy daddy' time is also very important! Another reason why I'm 'strict' with bedtimes. Need some adult only time haha!

When did he start sleeping through the night?
@togetheradventure9399
@togetheradventure9399 4 жыл бұрын
He started sleeping through the night at around 3.5 months. From around 12 weeks or so he started sleeping longer stretches like 6-8 hrs at night. By 4 months it was 10-12 hours. From the moment we brought him home we tried to teach the difference between night and day. So everytime he woke during the night we made sure to keep the house dark and quiet, no walks, no excitement, singing/talking/playing. I would change his nappy and feed him in the dark and just sit silently with him till he slept. During the day we were noisy and playful. Kept windows open, radio on, lots of playtime and singing/dancing, curtains drawn and such. I believe this helped us with getting him to sleep at night. Also I fed on demand and never let him go hungry. He would lead the way when it came to nursing.

Thanks for this. I now know this is where sm going wrong. My baby is 3.5months and he likes to play at night alot and so I entertain him since he isn't crying until when he feels asleep. Because of that, we are awake almost all night and asleep daytime.( Ofcoz the baby only). I done put the curtains down for his room because of the winter season and of I do, just a little for fresh air. I guess that has confuses us since our day is high time and night is daytime.

Do you have to wake up at nights to pump?.. It Might a stupid question.. My somewhere deep I want someone to tell me that there is no need to pump at night because between pumping and letting baby wake up on its own to feed at night I don't get much sleep and now I think I'm sleep deprived since i got restless legs at night
@togetheradventure9399
@togetheradventure9399 4 жыл бұрын
I very rarely pumped I think only like 3 times in the first year, so I'm not sure about the pumping to be honest. I only fed on demand so if you don't need the extra milk I don't see why you would need to pump at night. When he stopped feeding during the night I did leek alot but I just left it and after a few weeks the leaking stopped. I think the more you pump the more milk your body makes. Its supply and demand with breastmilk.
@togetheradventure9399
@togetheradventure9399 4 жыл бұрын
If I was ever too full because baby missed a feed I would gently hand express to relieve some of the pressure, but never pump. The 3 times I pumped were at the hospital shortly after birth as he had a tongue tie and couldn't latch. Once on holiday so I could try some beer without passing the alcohol to him and once to leave some in the fridge as I was leaving him with my partner so I could go out for a meal with friends.

Does he wake up thru the night and want to stay up or does he stay asleep until morning?
@togetheradventure9399
@togetheradventure9399 4 жыл бұрын
He will sleep right through! For a few weeks before this point he would wake at night but we made an effort to try to teach him that night time is for sleeping, I.e when he woke up, I wouldn't put on any lights, I wouldn't talk or play with him (using similar methods from birth the only difference would be feeding as newborns need milk at night), I would just try to coax him back to sleep, if I could do it while leaving him in his cot I would but if he was crying or too upset I would gently rock him or sing to calm him down and then place him again in his cot. Sometimes this meant picking him up and down for hours on end at 3 in the morning, but the hard work and sleepless nights for a few weeks paid off. He is now 1 and has slept through since.
