I'm baffled. What century do we live in? According to all the surgeons in the medical field, antibiotics don't cure a "deep" infection of an implant. So, plastic or metal can be infected? There's no prosthetic material that can reject bacteria? Well, I just did a cursory search to answer my own question. I guess copper is the one metal that resists bacteria. I'm wondering why the medical field hasn't been able to find a material that can be used in a transplant that resists bacterial infection. Maybe in the next century we'll have an answer.

Me too! I was diagnosed with AVN of my left hip in 2007. After a period of intense pain, it calmed down enough for me to remain mobile, usually with a cane or 2, and the pain was tolerable... until the past few months. Now, it's painful even with canes or crutches. I've started doing hip strengthening exercises at home to see how long I can hold off on hip replacement. Btw I'm 63 and am being urged to have surgery sooner rather than later. But, I'm afraid of infection too!

My understanding is that copper resists bacteria but it’s too heavy for joint replacement.

How can you take a hip out for awhile what would attach your leg??

I had a two stage revision so I know first hand. My surgeon made a spacer out of bone cement fashioned by hand. It takes up the space of the removed implant. If there was no spacer you virtually could wrap your leg around your neck like a huge wet beach towel. For 42 days I was in a rehab center and had a total of 126 bags of antibiotics (3 a day) via an IV. This hopefully ensures all staph is killed. It takes a few months for the bone work to heal before it can support a new implant because getting the spike portion of the implant out of the femur is quite an ordeal. Exact details are not for the squeamish and a bit long to include here. Hope this helps. Needless to say a walker on flat surfaces is your go to and crutches on stairs. You can't put any weight on that leg and falling down - well that is something fit for a horror movie.

I’m 59 Can’t walk very well but not in a lot of pain survived a massive stroke last year that left my left side paralyzed for months now I’m ok. I feel like I need a hip replacement but don’t have the guts if it goes bad besides doctors near me don’t medicate much for pain post surgery

A 1% chance of infection if you ask me is pretty high.

Thank you, that’s a fair chance and the cure is most often revision and if not a pic line with antibiotics which will level your gut bacteria and leave you open to much worse issues than an arthritic hip.

It is something I went through. I don't recall reading anything about the chance - not even in fine print. I've come to accept the fact that it was my bad luck. My number came up.
