I'm having a total hip replacement (anterior) in 2 weeks! I'm sorry I watched this video. I have never read so many negative comments and problems anywhere else. I have exercised and lived with horrible pain for 8 years. I am ready to take a long walk. I'm thin and healthy and working hard on all the pre-op exercises. I'm going to think positive and work hard on my recovery. Good luck to all of you with these horrible outcomes.

Take heart! Hip replacement surgery has a very high rate of success. I had an anterior hip replacement done on Feb. 1 here in Canada. The surgeon was / is excellent. My hip feels strong and normal now though I will go easy for a while yet. Used a walker for a few days, then a cane for a week or 2 but don't need it now. I still get quite tired but that is entirely normal. I did exercises from this channel, with a lot of emphasis on glute strengthening, before the surgery, and I'm sure it helped - now I'm getting back to it (my other hip will need replacement at some point too). For me, anyway, I had no real issues with pain (I do have a high pain threshold), and took just an NSAID for a couple weeks, then tylenol arthritis but not taking that anymore.

After 4 months post-surgery I still cannot sleep on that side without aching. I also have SI joint pain after walking for 3 miles. People act like hip replacement is no big deal, but it is. @@epmanualphysicaltherapy I'm only 55yo. I have since learned that there were more complications (bleeding out, drug resistance since my body doesn't metabolize a few drugs like oxycodone - it only makes me itch and has zero pain relief for me) with the first, but there was more bruising with the last (but we have discovered that dilodid is better than oxy. Too much red-haired genes). Like children, each surgery is different. I'm a fan of outpatient hip replacement surgery for those of us who are younger and in decent shape. We get moving more quickly, which helps recovery. I'm playing golf tomorrow. 🙂

Great information! I had my left hip replaced just one year ago and right one 5 months ago. I’d say that I have a few of the issues mentioned, a bit of nerve pain down left leg, I think maybe bursitis on right side and tight IT bands which I am working on. But I can honestly say that these are just niggles compared to the arthritic pain I was in beforehand. The arthritis progressed very quickly, over 2 years. The elation of having the 1st one done didn’t last too long as the 2nd one went from bad to worse. I was pretty much disabled. The pain controlled my life. No amount of painkillers touched it. So now I am exercising and active and enjoying life again. The 1st couple of weeks after surgery were the worst for pain. I found sleeping on my back the hardest. And it’s only this last couple of weeks that I’ve been able to walk up stairs properly rather than one leg at a time, so I know that I’m still healing. It can take up to 18 months for all the tissue and muscles to settle back down. I personally could not have gone on without the surgery and I would recommend it to anyone if they need to have it done.

Due to a car wreck in 2011, on my right side I have bolts that go through the S.I. joint. The right hip I've had replaced on the 13th of this month. What sorts of problems might you see this causing being also that this joint couldn't move because the bolts are holding it steady. My pelvis had been described as "crushed" hence reconstruction of it in 2011, after the car accident. The doctor had told my brother that he had had to go through some of the old hardware to perform this replacement.

With suffering from osteoarthritis pain over 5 years with IT band and hip flexors tightness to the point they feel frozen, I am now 2 months after the first one. I am dealing with the same muscle issue which I knew I would have. Before surgery, I had pain going down to knee and outside lower leg to the ankle. That pain was gone after the surgery. Then as I work at the computer, I sat 3-4 hours straight and getting up from the chair was stiff and painful and I got the same pain again. So I know my pain comes from the muscle. The problem is that I am in so much pain on other side that I’m not able to walk or do exercises right now. I am having the other side done next week. So I am hopeful that I’m able to do more to correct the muscle problem after that.

Your physical condition going in to surgery is critical to your recovery. Plan your surgery two months or more out and lose some weight and start walking at a minimum. It’s paramount that you be in the best shape you can be before surgery. I had a total right hip replaced and was on a walker two days, a cane two more and by day five walking on my own. No bad pain was on pain meds one day. I’m 68 too. Had surgery at 7:00am and was home at 3:00pm. I’m in shape though.

I had my hip replacement three weeks ago, August 27th, 2024. PT came in 2-3 times per week for two weeks. I was actually up and walking without a walker or cane on day five. On that day I went outside for a short walk with my PT person and felt great. I was going up and down the stairs (14 of them) a few times a day, one step at a time like they recommended. But then, and it seems like out of no where, I got this pain in my front thigh area. Bad enough where I needed to use both a walker and a cane. I am icing the area several times a day which helps. I can't find any articles or explanations why this is happening with the exception of one which says: because of the metal part that goes into your femur isn't cemented in, until your bone grows into it it can move around a bit and that can be the cause of the pain. Anyone else have this happen or have you heard of this happening?

Hi, great video...I'm from the UK had a total hip replacement as i developed really bad arthritis in the hips due to 30+ years of playing sports.. Anyway, I had my operation at 10.30am and was home the same day around 4pm after being able to walk up and down several flights of stairs at the hospital... The recovery after the first couple of weeks was tough and painful (especially after the hospital meds had worn off). I managed to do my exercises 3 times a day which was really tough, but if you can control the pain and keep up to your pain management meds when needed you will definitely reap the rewards...

I had both hips replaced. Three yrs apart. Both posterior...both went well. I did have bad thigh pain for a few weeks after...my surgeon said it was because he had to relocate a muscle to secure the hip so it wouldnt pop out...its been a year. That muscle is still weaker but better than prior to surgery...

@@robertmart7123 I went to physical therapy for a month and walking my dog every day for 20 minutes. Pain is almost gone. Based on Dr all these is due to scare tissue and most likely to bother some one younger due to muscle development and strength in comparison to an older person. Keep doing your exercises and check with your Dr. I am 8 months out and still have a little bit of discomfort but it is getting better thank God. I hope you experience a faster healing.

Had my arthroplasty several months ago. It was done laterally/posterior. Therefore I had the added pain of more cut muscles and nerves than an anterior approach. Solid 10 level pain for a whole month! My surgeon was a doll and refilled my oxycodone for four weeks. Wow. No one can prepare you mentally for that level pain for that long. They send ya home day 2 but truly one should stay at least a week in hospital. I came home all incontinent and pissing everywhere. It was messy. You got to have someone at home that will do nurse duties. Now, three months later, I cannot sleep on my right side. It’s tender to the touch. Although I can walk well. And I’ve returned to the gym for some biking and swimming. But wow, it still hurts externally. I’ve got an appointment with my ortho in several weeks. My biggest fear is reopening it for revisions or bc of infection.

I’m having Pain to and I’m in my second are going on my third month. And I had the same procedure you had with robotics. I understand to have that lateral posterior do you have to have it with a robotics for the best results but of course more things are cut by going from that position and it takes longer to heal. I’m still in pain. I don’t have the answer but I don’t think it’s infection I’m sure your doctor would’ve caught that. I hope you’re getting some relief my doctor does three month. My doctor has not prescribed any pain meds I’m getting through my regular Pain doctor for other pain but my surgeon has not given me any pain meds at all. I decided to stick with my Pain doctor because I’ve already been established with him for a couple years for other Pain. I hope you’re getting better and I hope you find out what’s causing your pain.

Just had a right hip replacement. The immediate pain was awful. Didn’t sleep first night, right leg was just really sore. I made the mistake of watching all these ‘walked in 1 day’ videos on KZbin so it’s taken me by surprise. I didn’t get the op until 4pm, so I didn’t get any physio until the next day. Feels just sore, bruised, but swelling has I feel gone down. Eased off a little but day 3 and I’m unsure if I can do exercises In this pain.

I just had my right hip replaced due to OA last May 23. After studying n researching all about the different approaches I opted for anterior which is considered minimally invasive. I was able to find the best doctor here in Kuwait n I couldn’t be happier. Staying 5 days in the hospital helped a lot with the pain management with a morphine next to me😅but actually avoided using it except when I had difficulty sleeping. I told my dr. I don’t want to come out here addicted. He laughed n said it’s very very low dosage. The pain started 2 days after the surgery when the anesthesia wore off. It’s when I woke up n got up in the morning. However it wasn’t 10. Maybe 6. It’s just for a few minutes. Same day of surgery I did PT already 2X a day. After 5 days I went home n it’s only the first night that I felt pain. I didn’t even use my walker at home only the cane. First thing I did was cooked😅 After 2 weeks I started driving but b4 that I was already going to supermarket, mall m Resto. Thank God everything went perfectly well. This morning I went to see my dr to thank him for a job well done n said goodbye as I am traveling back to Philippines on Friday. My scar is also healing well. I did 12 PT sessions here n will continue them in my country. Nurses n medical staff in the hospitals were surprised n happy to see me up n about saying I didn’t look like I did surgery. I am 67 n doing the other hip after few months. I recommend the anterior approach cause it has less recovery period n less pain as well based on others I knew who did the same. Good luck to all of us who are in this journey. In short I have no complaint whatsoever.

I had my hip replaced a week ago. It was the anterior placement. At home I kept my leg raised to reduce swelling instead it swelled more Kept getting worse. It seemed to be coming from too tight of a panty leg band. Now my leg swells the minute I put it down. I also have lumbar issues, sciatica, osteopenia and osteoarthritis. I have a lot of pain in the buttock and partially down the outer thigh. I know I'm only 8 days post-op but this pain on top of the swelling soreness WOW! My first knee replacement didn't hurt this bad. Is it usual for severe leg swelling afterwards? I'm hoping it goes away soon.
