I'm having a total hip replacement (anterior) in 2 weeks! I'm sorry I watched this video. I have never read so many negative comments and problems anywhere else. I have exercised and lived with horrible pain for 8 years. I am ready to take a long walk. I'm thin and healthy and working hard on all the pre-op exercises. I'm going to think positive and work hard on my recovery. Good luck to all of you with these horrible outcomes.

Take heart! Hip replacement surgery has a very high rate of success. I had an anterior hip replacement done on Feb. 1 here in Canada. The surgeon was / is excellent. My hip feels strong and normal now though I will go easy for a while yet. Used a walker for a few days, then a cane for a week or 2 but don't need it now. I still get quite tired but that is entirely normal. I did exercises from this channel, with a lot of emphasis on glute strengthening, before the surgery, and I'm sure it helped - now I'm getting back to it (my other hip will need replacement at some point too). For me, anyway, I had no real issues with pain (I do have a high pain threshold), and took just an NSAID for a couple weeks, then tylenol arthritis but not taking that anymore.

My friend just had hip replacement surgery and was back at work in 2 weeks. Had some pain for just 2 days Had a walker for just a few days Used cane for 3 weeks She said this was the best thing for her She was in excruciating pain for years before deciding to get it done She said keep a positive attitude attitude try to do a little walking and light exercises drink a lot of water before surgery and you will be fine Plus get a good support system around you Hope this helps

Thanks so much for this video! I learned a lot. Im 5 weeks post-surgery (posterior), and i am so happy i got the replacement. Its night and day. I went from very limited motion (Perthes Disease) to a full range of motion. In all directions. To be frank, the first 2-3 weeks absolutely suck! But it WILL get better. Please don't let negative comments get to you. You deserve a better quality of life.

Great information! I had my left hip replaced just one year ago and right one 5 months ago. I’d say that I have a few of the issues mentioned, a bit of nerve pain down left leg, I think maybe bursitis on right side and tight IT bands which I am working on. But I can honestly say that these are just niggles compared to the arthritic pain I was in beforehand. The arthritis progressed very quickly, over 2 years. The elation of having the 1st one done didn’t last too long as the 2nd one went from bad to worse. I was pretty much disabled. The pain controlled my life. No amount of painkillers touched it. So now I am exercising and active and enjoying life again. The 1st couple of weeks after surgery were the worst for pain. I found sleeping on my back the hardest. And it’s only this last couple of weeks that I’ve been able to walk up stairs properly rather than one leg at a time, so I know that I’m still healing. It can take up to 18 months for all the tissue and muscles to settle back down. I personally could not have gone on without the surgery and I would recommend it to anyone if they need to have it done.

@@epmanualphysicaltherapy I'm only 55yo. I have since learned that there were more complications (bleeding out, drug resistance since my body doesn't metabolize a few drugs like oxycodone - it only makes me itch and has zero pain relief for me) with the first, but there was more bruising with the last (but we have discovered that dilodid is better than oxy. Too much red-haired genes). Like children, each surgery is different. I'm a fan of outpatient hip replacement surgery for those of us who are younger and in decent shape. We get moving more quickly, which helps recovery. I'm playing golf tomorrow. 🙂

Hi, great video...I'm from the UK had a total hip replacement as i developed really bad arthritis in the hips due to 30+ years of playing sports.. Anyway, I had my operation at 10.30am and was home the same day around 4pm after being able to walk up and down several flights of stairs at the hospital... The recovery after the first couple of weeks was tough and painful (especially after the hospital meds had worn off). I managed to do my exercises 3 times a day which was really tough, but if you can control the pain and keep up to your pain management meds when needed you will definitely reap the rewards...

With suffering from osteoarthritis pain over 5 years with IT band and hip flexors tightness to the point they feel frozen, I am now 2 months after the first one. I am dealing with the same muscle issue which I knew I would have. Before surgery, I had pain going down to knee and outside lower leg to the ankle. That pain was gone after the surgery. Then as I work at the computer, I sat 3-4 hours straight and getting up from the chair was stiff and painful and I got the same pain again. So I know my pain comes from the muscle. The problem is that I am in so much pain on other side that I’m not able to walk or do exercises right now. I am having the other side done next week. So I am hopeful that I’m able to do more to correct the muscle problem after that.

What sorts of problems might you see this causing being also that this joint couldn't move because the bolts are holding it steady. My pelvis had been described as "crushed" hence reconstruction of it in 2011, after the car accident. Your physical condition going in to surgery is critical to your recovery. Plan your surgery two months or more out and lose some weight and start walking at a minimum. It’s paramount that you be in the best shape you can be before surgery. I had a total right hip replaced and was on a walker two days, a cane two more and by day five walking on my own. No bad pain was on pain meds one day. I’m 68 too. Had surgery at 7:00am and was home at 3:00pm. I’m in shape though.

How long is it normal to have a small amount of pain in the surrounding area after total replacement (posterior)? After, will I ever get back full rotation and range of motion (will I be able to do a cannonball into a pool or sit "indian style" if I was able to before)?

@@cymraesfalch my incision felt swollen and puffy for a long time. It prevented me from sitting properly for a while. 10 weeks is hard to remember specifics about at this point 7.5 months.. I can tell you now the scar is a little tender, but doesn't feel or get swollen much. I'm back working 50 ish hours a week and I walk for hours on most days (only 41 when I had it done). I'm getting back to the range of motion I described in my original comment....it's slow going, but the surgeon said some people it takes twice as long to get to where I'm at. Hope your swelling goes down and your recovery is fast. Don't over do it, but your effort and recovery go hand in hand. Physical therapy, and rest. I know it's hard, you'll get there.

I'm an Aussie living in Malaysia. I'm day 2 post THR wont be home for another couple mainly cos of a bleed, & subsequent drop in Hb & BP. Finally was able to walk today - it was harder than I thought it wld be. Drain came out tonight so i know I'll be better again tomorrow. Great to see this so can preempt Q's if i get any more pain. Its hard cos i really had little/no pain or disability until an "almost fall" a week ago. Great info.

Hi Cheryl! Greetings from Texas! 🇲🇾🇦🇺🧡 We are thrilled to hear that you found the information helpful. Recovering from a total hip replacement can be challenging, especially in the initial days following the procedure. It's understandable that walking on day 2 post-surgery was harder than anticipated. However, it's great to see that you were able to walk today, and we hope that each day brings further improvement for you. It's common to experience fluctuations in pain and discomfort during the recovery process, and it's good to hear that you're staying proactive by preempting any potential questions or concerns. Remember to follow your healthcare provider's instructions, take it easy, and allow yourself the necessary time to heal. In case you are interested we do have additional information and exercises in a playlist we have compiled for hip replacement help. You can check it out here: “Hip Replacement Help” kzbin.info/aero/PLJVIPiFvv1mbtxiBV-dKJseYEifBGANyT Wishing you all the best as you continue to progress and regain your mobility.🙌

Post op great, walked right away, never took pain meds except for advil for about 2 days. Unfortunately the pain in my groin area never went away. I am a very active person (personal trainer). Any suggestions as to what am I dealing with? Or is this normal? Thank you in advance.

I had both hips replaced. 8 months apart. My First replacement took a lot of stress during healing of the second replacement. Within 4 weeks I developed bursitis in the first hip replacement and strained my glute muscle in same leg. After about 3 weeks of painful bursitis it has finally calmed down. Now that first replacement is so much weaker and it is painful to put weight on it when walking. I had my surgeon take an X-ray and confirm mechanically it’s okay. His suggestion was more side hip flexor exercises and stationary bike and elliptical machine. Your video was immensely helpful, especially relating to bursitis.

Had my arthroplasty several months ago. It was done laterally/posterior. Therefore I had the added pain of more cut muscles and nerves than an anterior approach. Solid 10 level pain for a whole month! My surgeon was a doll and refilled my oxycodone for four weeks. Wow. No one can prepare you mentally for that level pain for that long. They send ya home day 2 but truly one should stay at least a week in hospital. I came home all incontinent and pissing everywhere. It was messy. You got to have someone at home that will do nurse duties. Now, three months later, I cannot sleep on my right side. It’s tender to the touch. Although I can walk well. And I’ve returned to the gym for some biking and swimming. But wow, it still hurts externally. I’ve got an appointment with my ortho in several weeks. My biggest fear is reopening it for revisions or bc of infection.

I’m having Pain to and I’m in my second are going on my third month. And I had the same procedure you had with robotics. I understand to have that lateral posterior do you have to have it with a robotics for the best results but of course more things are cut by going from that position and it takes longer to heal. I’m still in pain. I don’t have the answer but I don’t think it’s infection I’m sure your doctor would’ve caught that. I hope you’re getting some relief my doctor does three month. My doctor has not prescribed any pain meds I’m getting through my regular Pain doctor for other pain but my surgeon has not given me any pain meds at all. I decided to stick with my Pain doctor because I’ve already been established with him for a couple years for other Pain. I hope you’re getting better and I hope you find out what’s causing your pain.

Hey Stephen, thanks for your support! So sorry to hear about your hip replacement. Although your joint has already been operated, there is going to be certain weaknesses inherent to the time you had to take off of exercising and a possible muscle imbalance. It's hard to tell exactly without knowing your specific case, but a safe bet would be to begin working on fixing your underlying imbalance. I had both hips replaced in 2014 and 2015. The second surgery on the left hip did not seem to heal as well as the other, causing some pain with walking. Over the years since the pain worsened and X-rays revealed a broken upper trochanter bone. My new orthopedic surgeon shook his head and said nothing could be done! I am now using a cane and seeking another opinion in hopes of finding a solution to the pain and the limping. I am now 72 and know of no injury or possible cause for the broken trochanter bone.

I just had my right hip replaced due to OA last May 23. After studying n researching all about the different approaches I opted for anterior which is considered minimally invasive. I was able to find the best doctor here in Kuwait n I couldn’t be happier. Staying 5 days in the hospital helped a lot with the pain management with a morphine next to me😅but actually avoided using it except when I had difficulty sleeping. I told my dr. I don’t want to come out here addicted. He laughed n said it’s very very low dosage. The pain started 2 days after the surgery when the anesthesia wore off. It’s when I woke up n got up in the morning. However it wasn’t 10. Maybe 6. It’s just for a few minutes. Same day of surgery I did PT already 2X a day. After 5 days I went home n it’s only the first night that I felt pain. I didn’t even use my walker at home only the cane. First thing I did was cooked😅 After 2 weeks I started driving but b4 that I was already going to supermarket, mall m Resto. Thank God everything went perfectly well. This morning I went to see my dr to thank him for a job well done n said goodbye as I am traveling back to Philippines on Friday. My scar is also healing well. I did 12 PT sessions here n will continue them in my country. Nurses n medical staff in the hospitals were surprised n happy to see me up n about saying I didn’t look like I did surgery. I am 67 n doing the other hip after few months. I recommend the anterior approach cause it has less recovery period n less pain as well based on others I knew who did the same. Good luck to all of us who are in this journey. In short I have no complaint whatsoever.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I’ve watched a number of your videos and commented previously on another one. Your information is invaluable. I am a 35 year veteran of occupational therapy however, having a hip replacement oneself is a whole ‘nother ball game. I also had previous micro surgery on my lumbar and sacral spine, mild congenital scoliosis (which I didn’t learn about until about 2006) and SI instability from a previous fall down 5 steps on my butt w/ tx pending for that. I was always in really good shape until my back surgery and then there were about six years that I became deconditioned however, before my hip surgery I was working out approximately five days a week or trying to, and had been for > year and a half to two years. I’m so glad you talked about the muscle imbalance because I was utilizing compensatory strategies for years just for mobility, which really threw things out of whack. Currently my ITB is a problem and I also have quite a bit of difficulty doing SLR’s AG. I’m told that’s pretty normal. I live in a small town so the availability of good therapy is hard to come by and I appreciate being able to tune in here with you. Thank you so much for any additional input you can offer. At 67 and 4 wks post R THR (home same day and vomiting from hydrocodone so only had Tylenol first cpl days until I worked something out - Tylenol not enough lol); coming along one day at a time, one step at a time. Thanks again.

Just found your video - you've provided some very good information! I had a total hip replacement about 7 years ago and it went well - glad I did it! The one question that I have is "total range of movement after a THR". I'm still having trouble crossing the THR side compared to the non-THR side. Also, when laying on my back with the non-THR side I can bring my knee all the way up to my chest but the THR kind of locks up with my knee about 6 to 8 inches from my chest. Is that normal?
