I just graduated with an MA in 'Diplomacy and International Relations' and was wondering if you could talk about the difference between a PhD in International Relations versus one in Political Science. I have heard that if you want to teach at a university it's better to do the latter. Also, if you could talk a little bit about transferring credits from a Master's program to a PhD program and how that affects the length of a PhD. I really appreciate your videos. Different universities will have different policies so this is difficult to answer. You need to check with each university/program you apply to.

The personal statement will be key for positioning all your interests and telling the reviewer in a concise way that you are prepared for PhD level work, you've thought strategically about why that program is a good fit, the kind of research you want to do, and which faculty in the department you would most like to work with. You want to come across as organized, professional, and clued in to that specific department and why it's the best fit for you. Good luck!

Well, if you have your PhD and are looking at staying in academia, then I would encourage you to join the APSA ejobs portal so you can access job announcements at US institutions. Outside of academia, there would obviously be opportunities in research consortiums, think tanks, possibly government or NGOs. It depends on what your specialization is. Best of luck!

Ma'am do they consider non regular degrees while PhD admissions in the US ? The syllabus and everything is same and the difference is that we take classes on weekends instead of regular 5-6 day classes.

Hmm, I think that would depend on the type of degree you have. If it's still a BA or an MA, you just completed the coursework over a longer period and only on the weekends, that is still a BA. Most MA programs have night-only options for taking the actual coursework. As long as you have a BA or MA or whatever credential is required by the office of admissions for the university you are applying to, you should be fine. They don't need to know and they don't care when/how you did the classes, as long as you did them from some kind of legitimate/accredited program. Does this answer your question?

There are definitely ways you can make it work, it would be all about how you pitch the narrative when you apply. I've known PhD students in political science who had undergrad degrees in English, Philosophy, Biology, Pre-Med. You can definitely make a case for why that early training is relevant and how it will inform the work you want to do in your PhD program

Most PhD programs in the U.S. are paid programs. So you would not only get your tuition paid for, but yould receive a small stipend as well. Depending on where you go to school, this stiped might be difficult to live on. Imagine, for example, living on the stipend in a major/expensive city like Chicago vs a smaller college town. Even as an international student, you are also allowed to take the funds/tuition. There would be a process of securing your visa and the university you choose would have all those policies in place and help you navigate that process. When it comes to picking the right PhD program for you, that's a much more difficult question to answer. At the level of the PhD, the university matters less than the program. You need to pick the right program that will have your specialities/faculty mentors available. Your dream might be to go to the University of Chicago, but do they have faculty that are experts in the subfield you want to join? You need to pick a program that has the mentors in place doing what you want to do/researching what you want to research. The last thing you want as someone who wants to specialize in International Relations is go to a university where the political science program is known for specializing in American politics. You need to pick a great program with a strong IR track. Does this make sense? Department over university always when it comes to applying for a PhD!
