The Gretzky rule. It is where off setting penalty’s were created because the oilers would get penalty’s with the other team so it would be 4 on 4 and they would just give the puck to Gretzky so he would have more room on the ice

There's the Gretzky Hockey Draft rule where he was essentially split into two players. You had to take his assists or his goals. I'm from Calgary and wasn't old enough to see Gretzky play until LA and then even barely. But I still know all the beat downs the Great One gave us lol.

Fighting isnt going to disappear. It may have reduced but brawling and scraps will always be there as you have to answer the call when your teammate gets cheapshotted or laid out by a big hit. The Battle of Alberta last season proved this

In my opinion, penalty shots are supposed to simulate breakaways, so anything like a spinorama that would slow a player down that much shouldn't be allowed. I also think Patrick Kane's move at the pace of continental drift while showing off a thousand stickhandles should be banned, but that's harder to make an objective rule against.

Disagree. A penalty shot is not a breakaway simulation. It is a separate and unique situational play, and the fact that it primarily comes from 1 man breakaways is coincidental.

It is not coincidental. The rule was made BECAUSE of breakaways. They added other goal scoring opportunities later, but it came about because they got tired of guys deliberately taking penalties on guys on breakaways.

It has to do with physical capabilities of goalies too. Players can come to a dead stop and shoot off in almost any direction at high speed, whereas goalies have a delay in stopping and changing directions. If players are allowed to move too slowly or stop moving forward and change directions it's almost impossible for a goalie to stop, impossible if the player does it right.

Yes, Fighting in necessary in the game of hockey, in fact it should be more "common", Just look at how much the Star players are/have been targeted, Like Crosby/Malkin/Kariya/MacDavid just to name a few.. if the teams had a enforcer like Macsorley, Parros, Dave Schultz, Semko, George Parros, Joey Kocur, Domi. I think the star players would be alot more protected on the ice, and WOULDNT recive as many cheapshots as its now...

Timo Meier forced TWO rules in 2019: -Hand passes leading to a goal are reviewable (after Meier hand passed the puck to Karlsson for the OT goal) -The qualifying offer of a contract is the lesser of 120% of the cap hit, and the final year salary of the contract (after Meier was signed to a 4 year contract of $6mill AAV with the final year salary being $10mill)

Fighting will and should remain in the game as long as players find value in having teammates who will stand up for them. Hockey's self governance system does a service to the game by letting players take out their frustrations and grudges in an understood and relatively controlled outlet instead of by delivering cheap shots that could end up being a lot more dangerous.

There was a fan named Brittanie Cecil. One player was shooting the puck and it deflected off another guy’s stick into the audience striking her in the head which lead to her death. After that the NHL implemented a rule requiring extra safety netting at both ends of the rink in all arenas.

Pierre marc-bouchard did the spin o Rama against the Blackhawks in 2006. I had to look up the year, but I remember being at that game when I was a little kid and me and my dad just going absolutely bananas seeing that for the first time. Him and I will still bring that moment up when we talk about going to wild games. Probably a memory I'll have for the rest of my life

Not NHL but in a game of pickup some guy infused kevlar into his chest plate, effectively making him a tank, kneeled infront of the net, and just stayed there taking a grand total of eighteen shot blocks, and if the puck left the zone he would basically become an extra defenseman, thank god he didn’t hit anyone, but that’s all I can remember about the Kevlar Kevin.

Bobby Hull used to hand curve his blades back when everyone used wooden sticks. His extreme curves were known as the "banana blade". This gave him an advantage when he unleashed that big slap shot and is why there are now limits to the amount of curve allowed.

Yeah, not only that but the trapezoid doesn't prevent the goalie from going behind the net, it prevents them from going into the corners like Brodeur would do. That was a very unclear explanation he gave.

Based off your explanation of the Spin O Rama, it sounds more like a clarification to an already existing rule because of the Stopping forward momentum. So yes, it should stay banned unless the rule of continuous forward momentum is also changed.

Brodeur was great at handling the puck but the issue was the trap. Where a team stops the other from entering with the puck. The solution is dump and chase. That is where Brodeur comes in as he would play the puck and so preventing the “dump and chase”. Other goalies did it as well but none as well as him hence the “Brodeur” rule came to be. It’s only in the NHL, international play and other Europe leagues don’t have this rule as the trap is not played as much since the ice surface is big enough to not make it efficient

HahA! Rob Ray! One time after a game between the Canucks and the Sabres back in the early 90s, I was able to get Mogilny's autograph and Rob Ray's. Ray got into a fight against Gary Valk that night, and Valk really held his own. After the game, the Sabres emerged from the dressing room with some fans waiting for autographs. Nobody on the Sabres was willing to sign except Ray, and Mogilny only signed one card: mine. Every other player ran past the fans onto the waiting bus. While Ray was signing, someone from the bus yelled out, "Hey Ray, hurry up will ya?" And Ray yells back, "Hold your horses, I'm signing for my fans!" He was sporting two black eyes and looked like a raccoon but he made sure everyone got an autograph before he got onto the bus. The guy was a prince.

Spinorama absolutely had to be banned. It completely went against a fundamental rule of the shootout which is how you have to keep the puck moving forward. Players have done it since through pushing the puck through their legs as they do it to keep the pucks momentum, but the goalie could just poke check it off of the player so it’s no longer a preferred move.

Fighting should never EVER go away. First and foremost the entire goal of sports is to entertain. Fighting is entertaining and unique to hockey and instead of shying away from it the NHL should promote it. For those who whine about concussions how first do some research and realize most concussions come from body checks NOT from fighting. I will point you to the documentary Ice Guardians as it may change your mind about the direction of the league.

brodeur wasnt the only reason the trapezoid was implemented. interference was almost not existent in the 90's, so the devils would play the trap, mug and steal your lunch money forcing you to dump the puck in the zone. as you are getting mugged by scott stevens, brodeur would fling the puck up ice and get the devils easy chances. on a side note, this defensive system is often used as an argument as to why brodeur is not the #1 goalie of all time.

Comparing injuries in USA youth hockey (no fighting) to injuries in Canadian youth hockey (fighting at 16, I believe) it's kinda crazy it isn't started until Juniors and is nonexistent in the NCAA. What's more severe a punishment, getting suspended for a couple games or having to fight the biggest player on the opposing team for laying on a dirty hit? Really wish the dude who broke my buddy's neck in High School Hockey got his teeth knocked in but he missed 3 games while the other missed over a season.

Look up the stuff Roger Neison did. Late in game would take deliberate too men penalties on a 5 on 3. Put a defenseman in for the goalie on penalty shots. When pulling the goalie late in the game for an extra attacker tell the goalie to leave his stick on the goal line. RIP Roger.

Actually, it was the Pittsburgh Penguins who deliberately tanked to get Mario Lemieux. Former Bruin goalie Eddie Johnston became the Pens' GM and played set a record for the greatest number of players to dress for a game in a season. Ironically, it was Eddie Johnston who later advocating draft rule changes to keep teams from throwing games.
