In this whiteboard animation, I present the 4 conditions of success that define sustainability at a principle level. These principles have been peer reviewed and continuously refined over the last 20 years. It builds on the work of Dr Karl-Henrik Robèrt on sustainable development with The Natural Step: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl-Hen....

The videos you create are amazing. Please continue to create your content. Though as an English native speaker. I would say vowel pronunciation is difficult to understand. But not unmanageable and fundamentally within the essence of the topic so thank you.

I like the spirit of your effort but: 1. you left out the sun in your model and the critical role of solar energy 2. i don't know about item 4. that may need a little more clarification and justification 3. on items 1 to 3 i got the theories but hard numbers need to be laid down on all of this and tested, like how much of xyz can the environment handle in tons or whatever so theories, formulas, ratios and specific quantities.

1 - Point taken, it would be better with the sun in drawing. 2 - More videos will come on 4 3- Agreed, I have to go step by step as everybody may not have as solid a knowledge on these concepts as you. But I will share more tools such as a table of showing "Natural Flows vs. Societal Flows for Mined Materials" helping one favour substances that already exist in high concentrations in nature (such as Al, Mg, Ti, etc.) as opposed to ones that don't (Hg, Cd, etc.)

Sustainability Illustrated Great, i've been writing and theorizing about this stuff for decades. good luck. in my view libertarian government are key where environments are protected but markets are free to operate within those legitimate constraints. up till recently democrats and other socialists had free rain on all kinds of algore nonsense, i'm all about the numbers and the respect for health, environments and freedom as well.

Weird! I guess KZbin's algorithm can still be improved upon. Hopefully there were other results from your search. Good luck!

IMHO this is a misleading representation of sustainability. while nothing that is said is wrong, it does not address the aspects in a manner that it might be taught. Using the chess metaphor I especially like but it too does not go far enough as a metaphor. in short: sustainability may be achieved with an understanding of the systems involved in a process taking into consideration the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of any given situation. Such systems ought to also involve the application of economics (full accounting), ethics, energy (all aspects) and the health aspects of the endeavor (both from a human and corporate point of view). This is the sustainability game and there are not too many playing in it fully. The Conference Board of Canada through its relationship with St. Mikes -is not playing by the rules, nor is the UN through its involvement with the ISO 26000. so what do we do? play the game or teach the game? I have no idea.

Thanks for your feedback Mitch. Always appreciated... I agree that many other aspects have to be taken into account. This video describes only first order principles of sustainability in 5 minutes. More videos will come discussing other aspects and systems that will have to be considered and impacted to achieve full sustainability (such as human needs, economics, energy, etc). The chess metaphor goes further in the Einstein video about backcasting. Feel free to watch if you have not yet. We have no choice but to 'play the game' to survive and thrive within the socio-ecological rules of our world. I am hoping that these videos help teach the rules of the game to people who are not familiar with them yet.
