I agree on so many points. The lineup changes really hurt the band. I don't have a problem with Dave's voice. I don't understand why he doesn't let David sing more often. Like on Reckoning Day. And maybe I'll get some butthurt reply, but in my opinion, to be a successful musician, you not only need technical abilities, but also charisma and stage presence. Dave M has charisma for days, and Jr. too, in a lesser degree. But the constant lineup changes make it seem like it's Dave + session musicians. There's a reason the 90's lineup was the most successful. Nick and Marty made it seem like a band. I hope Kiko and Dirk stay until the end.

This is a good point. Metallica has a talent of writing songs that both metalheads and non-metalheads can relate to/enjoy. For example if you hate metal you can enjoy one it has clean melodic parts mixed with some heavy parts. Even the lyrics to one are much easier to enjoy for non-metalheads than most Megadeth songs. That being said James is a master at writing lyrics which can serve as a bridge for non-metalheads to enjoy Metallica.

Album Covers . I think Metallica soon realised after getting the name (Metal up your ass) rejected that it's not a smart idea to put forth your art. So they decided to have very serious Themes and Names for the Artwork. I.e - Catchy Album Titles. Beautiful cover art. Seriously themed . On the contrary , Megadeth always had a Nuclear holocaust themed Art covers in the 80's . With their Mascot Rattlhead on the cover, As much as a skeleton looks scary or cool. It gets old pretty fast and looks just another metal album trying to shock. Not to forget their Tongue-in-cheek Album Titles. Although pretty smart , They were not so good as a commercial idea .

I have heard it said before, and as a musician it is one-hundred percent accurate. Metallica is more of a laymen's band, whereas Megadeth is more of a musician's band. Dave Mustaine is the best guitarist of the three, and he surrounded himself with terrific musicians. Nick Menza was an absolute psycho, especially on Rust in Peace, and is in a different class from Lars. With all that said, Metallica is much more accessible and easy to get into.
@carlosluismendez73924 жыл бұрын
@Kurapika Giovanna what? Marty solos are tasteful and with great melodies on top of that. Hammett can't even bend a string in tune to save his life and that shitty vibrato doesn't help. Megadeth music in my opinion is more interesting in the long run while metallica is boring as hell, even his early albums. Their songs are too long and not good enough to keep momentum. Their best record is still Ride the Lightning because Master Of Puppets is more of the same but more boring.

1- In 1986, the Tallica boys had 3 "untouchable" albums. Even they we're touring with Ozzy (at this point, they were a "big name" on metal". I remeber Lars said in an interview; "At this point, our manager said to us we had enough money for buying a house"). In 1986, Megadeth had 2 studio albums. They were knowing as the "rival" band of Metallica. They we're faster, complex but drug addiction was a huge struggling for them. 2- Hetfield's lyrics are more personal and relatable. 3- Metallica stays as an "apolitical" band. In the other hand, Megadeth has always talk about the "System", religion, political problems etc (don't get me wrong, i love and share Dave's points of view on somethings)

Also; 1.Metallica in the 80s spent their recording budget on recording instead of spending most of the budget on drugs and then recording the album on the leftovers. If you're younger, you've probably only heard the newer digitally remastered versions and the quality on both is about the same, but if you have the old pressings you can hear the difference, the original pressings of Megadeth's first 3 albums sound like they were recorded in a basement demo studio while Metallica's sound professional. 2. Metallica made a point of playing in as many different markets as they could, even if they lost money in certain markets, Megadeth cancelled shows on major tours in the 80s in countries they couldn't find drugs in. 3. Metallica was friendly and professional with every band they toured with, whether opening or headlining, and most conflicts have been kept quiet while for many years Dave Mustaine was known as a bully to openers when headlining and openly resentful and disrespectful of headliners when opening, and he makes every dispute public in the most insulting way he can. 4. Metallica has never used up half of their set ranting about hating other bands. 5. Metallica has never been known to use their headlining status to block other bands from playing festivals by threatening to cancel if certain bands played, Dave Mustaine does this on a routine basis and openly brags about it.

It could be that in the whole 90's Dave was pretty conservative in his music explorations, 3 album with little exceptions could be one album. Metallica took a risk (!) and changed their sound completety on Load/Reload. Megadeth was a "famous band with major label contract" but still for metal fans. Metallica became mainstream, their own mainstream.
@WastedYears764 жыл бұрын
Michał Szuty agreed, Metallica were always the leaders and Megadeth the followers to some extent. Metallica crossed over hugely with their self titled album, it arguably took Megadeth a few years until Youthanasia to slow things down and inject more of a groove, but the album lacked the stand out, accessible singles. Similarly, Metallica have never been afraid to evolve their style with Load and Reload, Megadeth had ... um ... Risk, several years after load. In the 2000s Megadeth quickly returned to “fan service” thrash albums whereas Metallica continued to explore boundaries (arguably up until their last two studio releases). I do like both bands though!

Dave is the main reason. He's his own worst enemy. - Far too many lineup changes. New and old fans find this tough for many reasons. - Too many 'okay' albums. Quality over quantity is what's profitable. Theres bands with 5 albums bigger than megadeth - I'm afraid to say... his mouth. He's too opinionated in a bad way. He talks so much shit whether its deserved or not, on and off stage. We're not all into that lifestyle. - stage presense. He's always had the stage presence of an elderly man with a neck problem. Mustaine spends his life mourning after being kicked out of Meta, aways comparing himself to it and, first and foremost, wanting to outdo and outperform Metallica at everything to show them, to make them regret and ultimately to crush them down. I remember Marty Friedman saying after the release of Rust in Peace that Mustaine is "a titan of hard work", and I can see in my mind's eye Dave when he writes all those crazy ultra difficult riffs, saying: "here, take that James! That'll teach ya, take that, and that and that!", while considering all Megadeth's successes as failures (Dave in Some kind of Monster documentary said that whatever Metallica touches turns to gold and whatever he touches is a backfire, with a comment from Lars or that shrink doctor that 40 million albums sold is a measure of great success to everyone but Dave calls it a backfire). Long story short : this is the reason why Metallica is more successful : they made music because they wanted to make music, Dave made music because he was chasing Metallica, forever angry at everything that stands in his way. He is a great musician but with a wrong motivation and that's my theory.

I believe Dave admitted once that pretty much the only reason he created Megadeth was to get “revenge” on Metallica and outdo them... While I think that this rivalry led to some fantastic music, I am curious what would have become of Dave and Megadeth if he wasn’t so bitter and angry. Would he have let someone else do the vocals? Would he have created other music and explored more? Would he have changed his style? Metallica were both a blessing and a curse for Dave imo

@@greeneagle_13 Interesting questions. I wonder as well what would have happened if Dave had stayed in Metallica, what kind of band they would have been. With such a cut-throat rivalry Dave has always shown I really doubt they would have survived that. On one hand I admire his determination and hard work, learning the quitar, working in the studio till everyone drops from exhaustion, black belt in martial arts etc. But he's a control freak: what? You don't want me? You're kidding? 'Goodbye a thousand times' 'first mistake no more mistakes' 'Dave, the president' s calling - tell him I'm not in' kind of thing in many lyrics. Dave is not addicted to chaos, he's addicted to winning and its always his way or highway. James is a very competitive guy, saying "what do you mean it's impossible to play it faster, I can play faster, the one who can't is a pussy" but Dave takes it so seriously as if life depended on it. @@GL.Sorrell I am sure he would have created another band after Metallica, even if they would not have split the way they did. What I meant is that Megadeth specifically was a chance for Mustaine to prove himself. It was a chance to outdo Metallica and become more successful than the bandmates that kicked him out. I only ask myself if that hypothetical band of Dave would have been similar to Megadeth. At first I would say yes, but maybe he would have liked to change it up and sort of leave Thrash behind. I felt like Dave sometimes tried too hard to be better. I wonder how his band and music would not have turned out if he would not have joined Metallica at all/if Metallica didn't kick him out, you know? The thing I respect the most about Metallica is that, in my opinion, they always made the music they wanted to make. They didn’t give a shit if people liked it or not. The creation of Fade To Black is proof of that in my opinion. People expected these “new thrashers” to release brutal, fast and aggressive songs and Metallica came up with a ballad. Same goes for the Black Album and the entire 90s era. A lot of people say they “sold out” and “betrayed their roots” but I believe they were just tired of writing thrash songs all the time. You can still hear the metal in songs like King Nothing, Fuel etc. but they clearly wanted to try and mix it with different genres and experiment. They switched up their style because they wanted to do so, not because they were greedy. But that’s just my opinion 🤷🏻♂️

IMO Metallica is more popular because: 1) James Hetfield voice is by far the better one. He has a lot of range. 2) Megadeth music is a lot more complex, the riffs are not all an easy listen. So Metallica's music is an easier listen thats why it can reach to more people.

I think it was the singles. Back in the 90s in the US and Canada, if you liked a song, you would go to a record store and buy the whole album. The Black Album had two gigantic songs that entered the zeitgeist, Enter Sandman and Nothing Else Matters (Unforgiven to a lesser extent). Megadeth never had that kind of single. Symphony came close, but that song isn't going to sell 10 million albums. Dave's voice, the seemingly off kilter guitar licks the really heavy low end, all the things that make Megadeth great also held them back from mass appeal. If you offered a random person who lived through the 90s 10 grand to name a Metallica song, they could probably do it. If you asked them for a Megadeth song, unless they were a metal fan, I don't think they would get the money.

a 5th reason is the fact that while Metallica has made many songs about politics, they themselves has never talked about their personal opinions when it comes ongoing politics where Dave Mustaine has openly and very often used his own media platform to spread his political views who often actually contradicts with a lot of metal communities and actually works against his own industry, examples of this is the fact that Dave Mustaine in the election between Obama and Romney joined the republicans who accused Obama of not being a US citizen and even accussed him of being a secret muslim believer who was sent to infiltrate the US and the white house, further more, Dave has many times said that the reason he doesn't support equal rights for people with different sexualities is because he isn't ''one of them'' and has also stated that he is against all forms of abortions even those where the woman was raped, or was a minor, or a case of incest, saying that its the will of god. Great comparison! I think that there's a small mistake though - Metallica have released 3 albums, not 2 since 2003. St Anger, Death Magnetic and Hardwired to Self Destruct. Hardwired is their best since The Black Album in my opinion.
@simplyscholar214 жыл бұрын
Why has Justin Bieber sold more albums then Metallica? Metallica was easier for the mainstream to get behind. If your music is more easily digested by more people, then obviously you're going to be more popular. Metallica's music is more straight forward, it's fast, but it's not complicated. The most complicated music they made was on Justice, and even then it pales to anything on RIP. A beginning guitarist can learn Enter Sandman or For Whom The Bells Toll within a few weeks. Even the easiest Megadeth song, like Symphony, has twists like the chorus, that make it that much more difficult to learn.

You're right. Im a beginner guitarist and i can play Whiplash, Creeping Death, The Four Horsemen and other Metallica songs. But Megadeth? I can only play She-Wolf and Kill The King.

I agree with all your 4 reasons. Megadeth is a very very special band though . I agree that every music listener prefer to like a band with vocals first rather than the music and James has a very attractive vocals that any metal fans may like at a first listen where Dave on the other hand has a bit of a different style that you may not find quite attractive in the beginning but may find it to be awesome as well later by listening to Megadeth songs more often. I started with Megadeths old album too and didn’t find his vocals to be as awesome as James’s but later listening to deth albums like 13 , endgame , United abominations and hidden treasure , I started getting more into his vocal style and found it to be very unique and fitting with Megadeth music actually. Well for people trying to understand Dave’s vocals or Megadeth music I recommend them listening to new albums where Dave has more heavy and distorted muddy vocals.

I’m not a huge fan of megadeth the way I am for Metallica, but I gotta defend Dave mustaines vocals by saying they aren’t bad, they just don’t have mass appeal. Even I don’t always like his voice, I just feel it fits some songs really well and others I just feel neutral on it. But when it really works, it really works and I don’t think anyone could do it better when it really works. My 3 favorite songs out of the songs I have heard from megadeth are tornado of souls, a tout Le monde, and skin o’ my teeth, and I don’t think those songs would be as good with anyone else, they sound great with his voice and are so fun to sing along to

Dave's voice is definitely one of the reasons for sure, before the big 4 show in 2010 I used to sh*t all over megadeth because I thought Dave's voice was just awful and I couldn't stand megadeth either, after that show I saw megadeth in a completely different way, I also feel like this is the same reason dream theater never made it big...love their music but labrie voice is just not very pleasant to the ear in many songs

It's pointless to worry about which band is "more popular" - just listen to the stuff that you enjoy instead. You are listening to music for _your own_ pleasure, not for other people.

Also, we all know that Metallica is riding on the succes of their early albums 😉, yes?, and why almost 40 years to record only 10 studio albums?
@tobyhowe62594 жыл бұрын
The first albums were when they had nothing holding them back from writing and touring. At around load and reload they took there time making an album then st anger took them almost 3 years to make an album due to James going to rehab and then having issues functioning band. And ever since st anger they had no time because they have wife and kids. Personally I don’t think they are riding off their old songs I think they just don’t have the time anymore and they are getting old.
@tobyhowe62594 жыл бұрын
Death magnetic and hardwired are actually pretty different with every album they get closer to their classic sound and with their upcoming album it’ll probably evolve and sound different to hardwired and will be 1 step closer to their classic sound.

I agree with a lot here, I also think Megadeth in the 80s were a touch thrashier/grittier which kept away a few possible fans (and yet not as thrashy as bands like kreator and missing out on some of those fans), timing was huge, The epic ...And Justice finished off the 80s creating a huge fan base, and while Megadeth started off the 90s with their glorious epic "Rust", Metallica quickly turned into a Pop music band by releasing "the black album" one year later. So, basically Metalheads were still enjoying Rust, while Metallica had yuppies, little kids and mainstream radio fans lapping them up. Megadeth responded with a more radio friendly album in 92, but it still had more of a metal edge than the black album. Clearly that is another reason why.

Metallica had Mustaines music/riffs in the beginning. They used his music/riffs as a springboard.

Remember all those amazing thrash bands that no one has heard of today? Overkill, Exodus, sacred reich, Testament, nuclear assault??? Dave and co did alright. And it was never about super commercial success. It was about the music, the attitude, the release... In fact for Dave it was about being a musical challenge to prove that he could play faster and more technical than his previous band. He proved that IMO. James and co did remarkably well. Metallica got super lucky. 🤘 I’m thankful for and love all of it

Hello Andriy my friend!!! Great new video!!! I feel that part of the reason Megadeth just couldn’t achieve that (10 million+) level of success is because they sometimes focus on quantity over quality. For example: the time in between the Black Album and Load Megadeth released 2 amazing records. If they trimmed some of the filler and made it one single album, I bet it could have sold close to the black album. Especially if it was released in ‘91 instead of ‘92/‘94 when the shift away from Metal was happening.

For me Dave Mustaine is a gifted song writer. He has come out with some cracking albums in all fairness! He can write great riffs. Evil riffs and great soloing. Drumming is also on par too. Megadeth wins it hands down for me 🤘🤘

It's incredible how Dave was kicked from Metallica for being incredibly toxic and less than 10 years later he becomes known as one of the most humble people in metal
@steemonkey20004 жыл бұрын
Megadeth are heavier and more complex. Go I to a guitar shop, everyone is playing Metallica riffs, because they are easier. You're correct about the voice. I also think Lars sub par drumming helps. Proper metal drumming is just too intense for the mainstream. Lars is a rock drummer who can't keep time. It works for the mainstream. Dave is a much better musician and song writer, but it doesn't matter to the mainstream.

Dave is a better musician than James (and it's closer than Megadeth fans wanna think), but definitely not the better songwriter or vocalist.
@martos604 жыл бұрын
Dave is certainly not a better songwriter. It's one of the reasons he never got that popular. Megadeth has a few songs that reach the songwriting level of Metallica. Complex riffs don't equal good songwriting . And Lars has plenty of great drum stuff on Justice and Master. Drumming just doesn't matter that much to people listening casually or for the first time. To me Dave was never a frontman. He would've been great playing guitar and letting somebody else sing like in Metallica. And he also needs somebody else to come and control his writing like James, Lars and Kirk do in Metallica. Because to me most of the time he starts great and then goes into some complete cringe territory with his songwriting.

Gonna agree with you there: 2000s was Slayer decade, though 80s could have been theirs had they not been so freakishly scary to new metalheads at the time (given that RiB is literally *THE* best thrash metal album of that decade)

Metallica releases album now about twice a decade,a nd they are for teh most part pretty solid. Mustaine releases an album every 2 to 3 years with a revolving door of musicians and the albums themselves are pretty forgettable.
