I have a bank account that has a "vault". I only put as much on the card as I have budgeted to spend. It's almost as good as cash budgeting.

Here is a suggestion on saving money. My family was really hungry after church this last Sunday. And we also really needed to take a ride into town which is about 20 miles away to purchase a few items for the week. So we were tossing the idea of going out to lunch back and forth. But we're really trying to save money right now. So after church we quit granholm got some pretzels and chips and brought them in the car with us. We ate them on the way to the closest store. By the time we got to the store we weren't ravenously hungry and were able to make a few purchases we needed. By the time we got home about an hour and a half later we were ready to have our lunch. Which I have made in our Crock-Pot before we went to church in the morning. Just a suggestion but it saved my small family about $40 this past Sunday

That's a great suggestion to get snacks to tide you over instead of eating out. Makes great sense.

Many time we'll go owntown and first pack ham, Swiss cheese n rye sandwiches & cans of ginger ale. We'll eat some of them and offer some to the homeless as well. Also, a tip for saving money-at restaurants, order free water with a slice of lemon. Never order a drink.

I started using the envelope system after my husband passed away . I saved thousands of dollars in just three years on a very low income. I love the envelope system and it has helped me get through this pandemic! Re the squirrel eating wires...it's happened to me twice. I now put moth balls under the hood of my car and yes!!! It is expensive to have wires replaced?
@UndertheMedian3 жыл бұрын
Anne, thanks for the moth balls tip. We are so ready to try what we need to so that it doesn't happen again. We are so paranoid now about leaving the car on the drive for any length of time.

I think the main psychological affect of using cash is when you pay with cash, you literally need to give something you own to the other person. So you see what you are giving up to get that item. Which makes that item more valuable and also which makes you think about it multiple times. Because psychologically, we don't want to part with our belongings and holding cash in your hand, creates that affect. With credit card, you don't experience it because you don't physically hand over something you own to the other person. You still keep the card in your hand:)

Regarding the mouse issue our mechanic put a small device on our car that stops mice from damaging the wiring. Before we saw evidence of mice and after this no more indication of any rodent presence

I had no idea the psychological disconnect between numbers in a bank and the swiping of plastic. I started saving cash and feeling that money in my hands and keeping it in my home (safely of course). Cash is so much more precious to me, it’s real and I guard it and I guard how I spend it. I certainly don’t make money keeping cash in the bank now with interest rates low like they are, so keeping cash at home is a way for me to add to my awareness and keep savings that are vital.

@@KittyKat-vb1nd who are „they“? Nobody is forcing People to go into debt. Yes, Credit cards are highly advertised just as many products. People with low self-control who want to have things Right away instead of saving money to buy something outright are the problem. Brands want to sell their products but the person is still in charge if they buy it. You make it seem like people are passive which is just not true. You can always decide not to buy something if you don‘t have the money - but that can be hard sometimes. But people are not made slaves, they enslave themselves by going into debt (because they just don‘t have the Money Or an emergency fund). But it‘s easier to look for the fault in others instead of accepting that it is your choice 🤷🏼♀️

I don’t know what it’s like in America but in Australia a lot of stores have notices up saying they prefer cash less transactions to help stop the contact of Corona . I use a Visa debit card , this means I only use the money that is in my bank and it is really easy to track what I have spent it on .

Same situation here in the States. Most do still take cash though. I think that here a lot of it was the fact that we had a coin shortage. So, the stores couldn't make change.

My husband pays for just about everything with his credit card, that he gets cash back for. He pays the bill in full every month, he does not carry over a balance. He gets hundreds of dollars back every year. He pays the mortgage, utilities, insurance through online banking, he rarely writes a check. He mentally calculates what the must pay bills are each month, and he plans major purchases according. His FICO scores are all over 840, so he has been doing things well for him.
@UndertheMedian3 жыл бұрын
It sounds like he has a good handle on credit. You'll notice in other comments and videos that we talk about the fact that although we strongly recommend not using credit (because for so many it gets out of hand and suddenly you are purchasing items which you have no way of paying for), we also recognize that there are pros and cons to the credit card conversation. For us, we choose not to use credit cards. Thanks for your comment.

People either have low self-control or poor money-management skills if they can't use a credit card properly. Building your credit is important, even if you purchase a house with cash most banks require a minimum credit rating, and good cards offer cash-back rewards which you'll never get if you pay for everything in cash (hence how I pay for Thanksgiving and Christmas). Avoid being late by setting auto-payments. I simply track by using my credit statement weekly and using an Excel spreadsheet. Easy.

With cash you pay "present ", with credit card you spend your future.

I love the idea of having a cash enveloppe system. I just find it very hard to apply at the moment where I live in Canada. Many stores and services companies are now refusing to accept cash because of the pandemic. We can only pay by interact, credit or e-transfer.
@ShopaHAULica2 жыл бұрын
I haven't had the courage to try the cash envelopes yet and especially now with less in-store shopping, more online shopping, it is even harder. However, I heard this tip from someone I know and hopefully it will help you too. Instead of cash envelopes, he created multiple accounts in his back account and use them as cash envelopes. Each time he spends money and buy with a credit card, he would go and transfer the money out of that account and sends it to the credit card(or you can have one main account and transfer it there and pay your credit card all together at the end of your cycle). It is not as powerful as using cash but it should still help:)

You are so right about the but extra to just get free shipping. Wal-Mart offers free shipping when you buy 35.00 or more.... I stopped shopping in store cuz of impulse buying so I decided to shop at Wal-Mart .com. I would go on to buy 22.00 of dog food then need to add something for free shipping. Normally I would just add a bit more dog food to bump it up, right? Gunna use it anyway right? But then you use a credit card. OMG, that can get out of hand so fast and you end up spending more on interest than you would have on shipping. I paid it off fast as I could and now I go to the store but now, I have major goals and I'm sticking to them.
@UndertheMedian3 жыл бұрын
I have faced the same problem, myself. I seem to be able to justify getting up to that magical "free shipping" amount. I will say that Walmart has gotten very high marks in my book for fast shipping. Items from Walmart arrive on (or before) time. Whereas Amazon seems to take forever these days.
@greeneyedredhead613 жыл бұрын
@@UndertheMedian I agree Wal-Mart shipping is quick but something I do not like is the way items are damaged when they arrive. I've had dishes arrive broken as well as packages broken apart or crushed. So for those reasons, I have stopped ordering.

I've really enjoyed watching your videos and learned so much! I do use credit cards at this time, but I'm contemplating trying the envelope method. My question is, how to you order things online or pay local bills such as utilities or telephone that don't involve using a card or writing a check? You can't very well use an envelope full of cash to pay your phone bill that goes to a town 100 miles away. I'd love to know your method.

We use a debit card for those things. The envelope system isn't practical for everything. What it will do is get you back on track in a hurry if you have been having trouble overspending in any area.
