I lost a few friends over the years because I would not attend or host home sale parties as much as Tupperware, Mary Kay cosmetics, and other stuff. I tried to explain that since I would not be buying the stuff, I couldn't attend these parties but some friends were insulted. Oh, well...

I attended a Tupperware party, took a plate along, BUT made it clear that I wouldn't be buying anything and that was fine with my friend as she said she was just happy to have a good number of people there. I once bought a book, without even opening it, just because of the title "Please don't ask me to your Tupperware party Sharleen" - it was on the discount table but that's beside the point! Cheers from Oz!!

I'm so glad to be trendy - and frugal! Our dishwasher stopped and a fault appeared on the panel (it's a fairly old machine but still works beautifully), before we called anyone we Googled the machine's manual (easier than digging it out of the filing cabinet) and were able to clear the blockage that was causing the problem. Same thing happened recently with our steam station iron - something was stopping the steam going through, hubby called the repairer and it was going to be AUD$70 at a minimum and an hour round trip to drop it off. We slowly and methodically worked through what might be the cause and I very gingerly pushed a skinny tiny pipe brush into the intake and outflow ports and VOILA it was fixed. My parents once picked up a vacuum stick from the side of the road because it looked pretty new - and had it working like a charm after they took out all the dust and crap that had stopped it working!! My point is you CAN sometimes fix things, if you use patience and common sense. Great hairband Sara - very cute!! Cheers from Oz!

We tried this too with our dishwasher. My husband is the smartest handiest guy on the planet. We only called someone when he couldnt fix it! I say try first if you have that mindset.

One year, a friend hosted a birthday party, and instead of spending $ to buy something, she asked people to bring a favorite poem or name of a book or activity/place that they enjoyed and share with the group. Another friend had a potluck at her wedding. She and her husband provided the main entrees, and the guests were asked to bring a dish to share as their gift. In these and other ways, we try to lessen our consumption of stuff but more importantly, not let social events be a financial burden to friends.

When we downsized, I got rid of most of my seasonal decorations. I did buy a green wreath and items to decorate it for different seasons. I now just change the wreath on my front door each season. It’s been great. I do still put up a Christmas tree and a few of my sentimental/favorite Christmas decorations; however it seems that once the tree is up I’m putting up fewer and fewer of the others each year.

I've always saved tissue paper, wrapping, ribbons. I had little extra early in my life. Even though I can afford to buy all those items now, I generally don't. I iron the materials and they look like new. I'm glad the ideas you've suggested are catching on. I would add that getting your veggies via a CSA is a way to avoid the plastic wrapping. Great video!

I love all those tips and follow most of them. My entire wardrobe fits into a carry-on bag as long as I wear my coat. Mix and match, layers, thrift store finds, plus my own crafted jewelry took me on a month long Amtrak tour with a side trip on a cruise to the Alaska inside passage. I collect memories and pictures instead of stuff. My skin care routine includes Kirk's Castille soap and coconut oil. Works great for my hair, too. I refurbished my 8 year old Skechers shoes with black rubber I repainted on the toes after a good wash and dry. These are my only sneakers and they go with my black pants. I want them to look spiffy. Instead of spending $4 for a new part I fixed a broken toilet handle lever with a wire coathanger, using heat, a wire cutter, pliers, and safety glasses. It should last another 10 years. These repairs took far less time than shopping for the parts. Rethink, refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, recycle as a last resort. Rethinking usually obviates the need to recycle. My secret's out: #ZeroWaste!

My F-I-L owns a resale place. Our whole home is furnished from his shop. Italian leather furniture, good quality furniture and coat tree, home goods like trash cans etc. Its saved us sooo much money and we couldnt afford to have such nice stuff if we tried to buy everything new, PLUS like you said, the quality of most stuff today is not as nice as older stuff, especially furniture. I learned early on to check with F-I-L if he has something before i even check other thrift stores or trying to buy new. 9 times out of 10 he has it. Got our table umbrella out on the deck and some hangers for my closet are a few recent finds down at the shop I can think of. I never minded using used stuff(some is even new(never used) but preowned) and I feel good saving $ and keeping some out stuff out of the landfill even possibly. Underconsumption is definitely making a comeback with younger gens. I am a Millenial (1989).

I’ve used super glue to fix the sole on my shoes…worked like a charm. Tonight, I am repurposing leftover from out Thanksgiving (Canada) by making a cranberry, stuffing, turkey, yams quesadillas. Fingers crossed that it is edible lol. My Thanksgiving Decor consists of a small wicker horn of plenty ( cornucopia), stuffed with a ring of artificial fall leaves and a pumpkin candle inside that. I paid $5 over 20 years ago for it. It only comes out for the Thanksgiving table.

You are so helpful. I'm terrible at "collecting" body wash, face wash, shampoo and lotions. Some are from Dollar Tree, but still I have way too many. Another thing I love are the fall and winter scented candles. I have over two dozen of the high end ones. (My excuse is I will only buy them when they are "on sale".) What I have been doing lately is saving the wax at the bottom of the jar when it can no longer be lighted easily. I then burn this in a wax melting container. This saves me from having to go out and buy a whole new candle. I seem to have certain scents that are my favorite anyway. Thanks for the ideas!

I found out a while ago that if you freeze and use fresh veggies within two months the veggies do not need to be blanched first. I have a chest of drawers that my parents purchased for me as a baby that was unfinished and they finished it themselves in 1945. It became my chest to hold my toys when older, my mothers craft drawers when I was a teen and then became my first child's chest when he was born in 1972. Now I use it in my bedroom to hold extra clothes and miscellaneous items. I purchased an unfinished bureau for my son in 1972, used it for 2 other kids, and passed to my grandchild when he was born. He is now 12. The baby crib that my parents purchased for me was also used by my brother and sister, 4 cousins, 2 nieces, and 3 grandchildren. It is still in the family to be passed on.

We figured out it was in a pump and ordered it online for $200 and fixed it ourselves saving having to hire a repair man also. We put glass block windows in our basement windows ourselves. We keep the thermostat at 65F all winter, using gas or electric is consumption too. Just buy a thrifted cardigan or hoodie to wear and layer up. I catch rain runoff from the garage roof to water the garden in a water barrel we found floating in a reservoir we kayaked. We also found buckets that are used to catch run off and use to wash the kayaks or tools or water the plants. We use grass clippings under trees and shrubs to prevent weeds and they have an added benefit of fertilizing and water retention. They are also composted for the garden. Branches that fall from our trees are used to start the fire in our fireplace and trees that die or need branches trimmed contribute to our firewood pile.

Underconsumption just another way of saying too broke to buy anything!!! I am glad people are finally looking at consumerism and realising it is hurting everyone and the planet too

The old frugal ways would work well for the younger generations. Having fewer high-quality items saves money because you don't have to replace them so often and it requires less space to store.Mending clothes extends the life of them. KZbin is a great resource for repairing items.

My neighbor just spent $3,500 on a VACUUM !! It was an impulse buy and of course it was financed. I’ve tried to help her with suggestions for budgeting and having a written budget. But I think I can’t fix her. I tried. 😮

Haha I’ve been thrifting for many years and don’t buy more than is needed and use up what’s in freezer and cupboards so they get eaten up. Funny how I see many people constantly ordering coffee and meals via delivery apps.

It's funny, this trend has already run it's course on Tiktok and there are more Tiktok videos coming out of people being over it already. Which suggests that all of the people that took part in it are just a part of the over-consumption of internet content. These trends are lucky to last a week. So at the end of the under-consumption trend, it just became a part of over-consumption.

get this I don’t know if you have a Ninety Nine restaurant where you live but we have in Massachusetts. That’s a big chain. I ordered the turkey dinner and my daughter ordered chicken Marcella. My turkey dinner came with two tiny pieces of chicken turkey. I was still hungry after eating it I called the restaurant to find out how many pieces of turkey do they give you my daughter said in the picture it look like three but when I called they said it’s true. It goes by weight and I said well it’s it was very small and it came with mashed potatoes and corn, a small portion and a biscuit which I gave it to my daughter. I didn’t eat the biscuit and if that’s not a warning sign, don’t go out to eat anymore. It’s ridiculous. I called and said ripped off never again you know it’s different if you’re gonna sit down in the restaurant but when you get takeout, it’s always a letdown every time and it’s not like we can afford it anyway, but I couldn’t believe the small pieces of turkey like I was snacking afterwards I was so hungry and I hadn’t eaten all day . live and learn

Learn to sew! 🤷🏼‍♀️ Then you don’t have to pay someone else to alter/repair your clothes AND you can make new clothes from duvet covers, sheets or thrifted fabric. There are so many free sewing patterns available that would only cost you the paper and ink to print them out and you can hack your patterns to make different garments from one pattern.

I watch your vlogs almost as they are uploaded. You are using more and more "subtitles" which are distracting and becoming annoying. Why not using your less is more motto? I think your message is getting deleted in all the extra words. Just subtitle the main points not every little point. It's just my opinion - still like your main message do with this what you will. Sorry for so many words -LOL.

I like the subtitles. For me, they reinforce the most important points that she is speaking about. Plus, I’m a very visual learner and a “word” person, so personally I like them!
