Also if you had put a sheet of plastic along the ditch you can save the top layer with grass on it , fill the hole , put the grass back on and water it a few days and it grows right back

Great video. Looking to do the same. I’m stuck on whether to use a wye like you did or a sanitary tee for the downspout clean out. I’ve seen a few pictures floating around where people use the sanitary tee with a grate. My plan is for the clean out to be fairly close to the ground
@andrewhohlfeld10 ай бұрын
Thanks much! Both would be great options. I would recommended some sort of clean out for sure to make life simpler later. Id recommend keeping it off the ground enough that it doesn’t get in the way of the lawnmower deck. The beauty of these pipes is there’s no longer a need to remove the metal kick outs when you mow.
@chrisy389710 ай бұрын
That makes sense. Appreciate it! Other question. Is there a limit on how many downspouts should meet at the bottom of one? For example, I have one downspout that will go directly down, 90, then go to daylight. Right after the 90 I had planned to put in 2 wyes to tie in 2 other downspouts. Should I space at least one of the wyes out further down towards the end of the drain? Even by a few feet?
@andrewhohlfeld10 ай бұрын
@@chrisy3897 how many downspouts into 1 pipe really depends on the surface area is the roof(s) you are dropping into them. When I did my house, I spit the backside of the house into 2 runs of pipe to not overwhelm it during large downpours. If you’re going into a 4” pipe and the roofs you are grabbing are not super large then it shouldn’t be a big concern. Those 4” pipes can handle a lot of water. I wouldn’t think you would need to space the wyes, as long as the total pipe captivity is not overwhelmed, they should be able to meetup fairly close.
@joerevere555811 ай бұрын
Nice work! Thanks for sharing the video. I'm curious though... is there some kind of removable screen that could be installed where the downspout meets the pvc pipe to keep leaves, roofing material, etc from entering the pipe? I would think that this debris entering the pipe would build up and clog the pipe underground at some point.
@andrewhohlfeld11 ай бұрын
Thanks man! Since the inside of the pipe is smooth (no ridges like corrugated has) and has proper slope then it should pretty much keep itself clean I would think. Shingle debris makes its way through the pipe pretty easily. The more velocity through the pipe the better!

It looks real good. Congratulations! Why did you have the outlet extend 4 feet into open air? I would be afraid of something bad happening there. Maybe I'm just paranoid.

Extended farther in case we add more soil along the bank in the future. Both pipes are supported with fence posts, but I understand where your coming from with that lol.

I'm catching three downspouts and moving the water about 10' or so under 3-4" of river rock. Flower beds so no traffic. 4" Schedule 40 PVC or DWV pipe? Cost difference is about $124 vs. +$200. Comments?
@andrewhohlfeld8 ай бұрын
You shouldn’t need any pressure pipe if there is no heavy traffic on it. The foam core sch 40 will do just fine. I only used the pressure pipe (at my personal house) where I drive over it with heavy equipment (bobcat).

Great video. Thanks for sharing. Question, lightning rod? Can explain more if legit or was this just a joke?
@andrewhohlfeld2 жыл бұрын
Many older homes have these. Creates an easy point for grounding when lightning strikes near roof. Rather than creating potential damage on the structure it routes it to the earth.
@philknight44502 жыл бұрын

@andrewhohlfeld2 жыл бұрын
Located in Wisconsin, even though it’s shallow bury as long as pipe is sloped properly and not retaining water it shouldn’t pose a huge issue with freezing/cracking (I hope). Most pipes break due to internal freezing pressure/expansion. Adding some de-icer could help as well. Cheers!

Why schedule 40? Seems expensive for non pressurized pipe.
@andrewhohlfeld Жыл бұрын
Sch40 is stronger and more crush resistant, especially if your putting underground and want it to last longer. There are two types of PVC pipes for this application (pressure and non pressure), the type we bought was cellular/foam core (non-pressure) and is a lot more cost effective.
